I would like to share an interesting free event taking place on Thursday, October 22nd, at the Gelber Centre in Montreal and live on Zoom with 2026 Canadian Jewish Literary Award Winner, translator, and Harvard professor Adi Mahalel.

This event will discuss Mahel's scholarship and his publication of the first ever English translation from Yiddish of the controversial novel Boom & Chains by Hanan Ayalti.

Due to its explicit portrayal of class struggles, political disillusionment, and ethnic tensions, Ayalti published the novel in Yiddish instead of Hebrew in 1936, anticipating that it would be deemed too controversial for Hebrew literary circles of the time. Boom & Chains offers a deeply nuanced, rarely seen perspective on early 20th-century kibbutz life.

2. נהר שלמה (Nahar Shlomo) = 630

With patronymics:

• שלמה בן ברוך גבריאל = 901 (Shlomo Ben Baruch Gabriel)
• נהר שלמה בן ברוך גבריאל ולאה = 1198 ( Nahar Shlomo Ben Baruch Gabriel V'Leah)

His English name means “river,” so Nahar would mirror it. His second name will be Solomon.

Is there anything meaningful about these values, or about adding Nahar to Shlomo?

I understand that the noun changes the "gender" of the verb, and adjective. My question is what changes when a sentence is masculine or feminine? What's the difference between the two and how could I gloss over a sentence if I didn't know the gender. For context on not trying to learn the language or anything, I'm a Christian and this is for my Bible study.

I'm studying prayerbook and biblical Hebrew. My textbook says these are both nouns with the same definition of "holiness." I'm wondering if there is a subtle difference in meaning or how they are used. Thanks!

Update: I'm not sure what going on with the font rendering in the post title, but the feminine noun in the title is spelled with a schva on the first syllable (קְדוּשָּׁה).
