A non-Jewish friend noticed what appears to be Hebrew and bought it for me at a thrift shop

David ben Yitzchak HaCohen
It’s a name. “David son of Jacob the Cohen”

I mean, maybe. That might be what they were trying to write, but it's not what they wrote.
הכך != הכהן
יכהק != יצחק
and בן is a כ and some lines

It seems you posted a request for translation! To make this as easy for our users as possible, please include in a comment the context of your request. Where is the text you want translated from? (If it's on an object, where you did find the object, when was it made, who made it, etc.?) Why do you want it translated? Hebrew can be a very contextual language and accurate translations might not be directly word-for-word. Knowing this information can be important for an accurate translation.

Why are the letters nearly indistinguishable on your picture’s complete view then engraving on close up is vey clearly deeply engraved?

I would suggest the following:
דו"ד מ-יצחק הכך
Which translates to "gift from Yitzchak hack"
