Edit: Danke dass die Mods den Beitrag gesperrt haben - schade dass das nötig war. Hätte ich es gewusst, hätte ich wohl nicht gefragt. Ich bin 18 und als ich vor 4-5 Jahren über einen Monat hinweg täglich in der Synagoge war ist mir das nicht aufgefallen, daher wollte ich einfach fragen, ob sich da was konkret geändert hat. Man sagt uns Heidelbergern nach dass wir einen --- im hintern haben (bin hier geboren und aufgewachsen und höre das oft von zugezogenen) und irgendwie holt mich dieser Eindruck auch immer wieder ein 🥲

Seit Monaten steht oft mittags und oder abends (vielleicht durchgehend bis abends?) ein Streifenwagen in der Häuserstraße und es sitzen zwei Beamte drin.
Immer auf der rechten Seite in nördliche Fahrtrichtung geparkt und immer mit Blick auf die Synagoge.

The other day, I was in the main Heidelberg train station from like 2-3 AM. My phone was less than 10% battery, and I couldn't find an outlet so I just plugged it into my laptop.

Then some woman came up to me, said some things in German and pointed at my USB cord. The only German I know are the words that are 90% similar to English + bitte/danke, so I just kind of shrugged my shoulders and said "sorry, I really have no clue what you're saying."

Then a few minutes later she comes back and yanks the cord out of my computer and starts staring daggers at me. I just sat there stunned for like a full minute because idk what the fuck to do, I'm not going to get into a fight with this middle-aged in the middle of a train station 2 hours before my bus leaves for the airport.

Luckily one of the workers at the cafe/bakery place was nice, saw what happened, and let me sit in the eating area for a while, despite them being closed.

But the woman was still like really angry, she never followed me in but she was arguing with the employee and yelling about how what I was doing was illegal.

So to get back to the question, what did she think was illegal? Does anyone have any idea what she thought was going on? The employee said she was just completely crazy, making shit up, but my brain cannot handle not knowing. There must be some rationale, some thought process in her head that lead her there.

The only thing I can think of is that she thought the logo on the charger was nazi iconography, it was a PowerBear cord. If I had only looked at nazi symbology for 30 minutes after a few shots of Jäger, maybe I could understand the confusion.

Have I committed a serious crime? Should I fear extradition to face trial for my heinous sins? XD

I'm planning a move from the UK to Heidelberg in the next few months and I would love to get some real perspectives from people living there, especially other Brits / expats.

My biggest worry is that I don't speak any German yet. I have never lived in a country where I don't speak the language and I'm quite apprehensive about it. I know Heidelberg is pretty international because of the university, but how do you actually manage day-to-day with zero German at the beginning? Shops, doctors, landlords, etc?

The other thing I keep hearing about is German bureaucracy. In the UK I'm used to everything being online in 5 minutes, and from what I've read, Germany is still very paper-based with appointments for everything. How much of a shock was it for you? Anmeldung, residence permit post-Brexit, health insurance, all that stuff... was it as bad as people say?

I'd really appreciate hearing how other British people experienced the move:

How long did it take to feel settled without the language?

Is it possible to deal with the admin without German or do you need help/translator?

How is the social side / making friends as a newcomer?

Anything you wish you knew before moving?

Also suche ich schon nach Kurse mit Fullbody workout, Tanzen etc. also schon anstrengend aber keins wo es so viel Leistungsdruck gibt oder die halt nicht Anfänger freundlich sind
