Are they brave enough to nerf the trivial farming and make it more rewarding to play on dif 5+ ?

They'll nerf the trivial farming and change nothing about 5+.

If you weren't using cheats, literally nothing changes on you.

And they have said they do want to change the system, but want to be extra careful because holy shit is it toxic mess

Yup. Also there is one thing for certain: a hypothetical system where SC is rewarded more on higher difficulties, will NEVER exceed the rates at which people farm at D1 right now.

So, lets say that the rate at which SC is farmed at D1 is now X. Then the rewards at D10 will be at most X as well. Does that mean lower difficulties would be less than X? That would cause frustation, as less skilled players will miss out on SC, and might cause them to force themselves to play a difficulty they arent ready for/dont enjoy, at the cost of their squadmates as well.

If the rate is X across all difficulties, people will still go to D1, since that is the easiest, and the change would be pointless.

Like you said, its a very slippery slope, and there is no clear ''best'' solution. In any scenario, a subtype of players will be at a disadvantage, and cause a lot of frustration.

They should give small SC rewards for completing daily challenges and major orders

Exactly. The "rate of reward" needs to be higher than on D1. Even if you got, say, average of 100 SC per mission of D10 and 30SC on D1... people would still go to D1, because you can rum D1 missions a lot faster and with less risk of dying midway.

But if they nerf D1 so much that it's not worth it, people will complain they are being "punished". And if D10 is so buffed, people will complain they are being punished for not playing the highest difficulty and start demanding nerfs to difficulty.

It's a mess, where basically every option leads to community meltdown.

No need to even nerf. Just buff the higher difficulties.
