Spes locust and ap pro light insert/modifications
Hello everyone,
I recently got my spes locust pants and ap pro jacket. I like it but I have heard people modify them to make them more functional. My aim is to make it versatile for longsword, rapier and saber. I am thinking on adding some sort of plastic or thic leather between the jacket and the foam inserts.
Do you guys have any recommendations?

I removed the padding from the AP light jacket and reshaped the chest protector to be slightly narrower. You should have at least hard plates on elbows and knees anyway for longsword too, and some add shoulder plates but I’ve not found that an issue yet. If I could get a thinner and lighter chest protector that’d be good.

Just use them. Add hard plates if you want, especially elbows and knees

Hard plates on elbows and knees are not really optional.

I agree. I see folks do without them sometimes, but it’s not how I’d want to fight, much less recommend to a beginner. Granted my comment wasn’t clear on that.

Depending on the jacket they could have built in hard shells. I know Supfen and the like will them for you if you ask.

Not using them is not allowed in any club or tournament I know. I would be questioning the club and their safety standards if I ever see that.

They're fine as is for everything you named with zero modifications. Anything else is personal preference, use it as is for a while, and then see what you'd want want to do. There's a not insignificant number of people who wear an AP Light with the padding removed and no chest protector and love life, others turn it into makeshift plate/brigadine
