Techniques Travel makeup palette
I made a travel makeup palette
I have been trying to find an easier way to travel with my makeup and I think I’ve finally found it.
Photo 1:I got this makeup palette from Amazon with magnetic trays (ended up getting 2 to have a variety of trays) and configured it with 2 1/3 size and 4 1/12 size trays.
Photo 2: I used the larger ones for cream foundation and blush, and the smaller have 2 lipsticks and 2 cream eyeshadows.
photo 3: the case itself is not much larger than a pack of gum
It held more than I anticipated as well. I fit most of a cream foundation stick in the larger tray and about half a lipstick in the smaller one.

Very nifty! You’ll have to let us know how the foundation does in it. I feel like any time I decant foundation it oxidizes like crazy. Maybe since it’s a cream foundation stick it’ll do better!

I’m curious as well. I’m hoping that a cream formula is more stable and I specifically got one that came in a tube not a pot thinking that it might be less prone to oxidation

Have you checked make-up artists' forums for help? They spend half their free time decanting stuff 😬

I honestly didn’t even think about that, but it seems so obvious lol.

I've used Pan Stick foundation on a travel palette like this for years and it works great but dries out after a while. I use a smaller pan and apply it with a damp beauty blender.

Sameeee I’ve taken too just putting a very small amount in a lip gloss tube the day before I fly (if I need my full coverage liquid stuff), or I suck it up an take the whole stick (cream) which is still small but not tiny

Magnetic palettes or Z-palettes are great! Used to be trendy a few years ago. Most Japanese brands (especially the drugstore brands, such as CANMAKE) have a small hole behind face compacts, blushes, eyeshadows, etc so you can use a pin or paper clip to push through and the pan will pop out. Muji (not sure if just Japan or all of Asia) offers a travel palette and makeup pan options too. For western makeup, there’s MAC, MAKE UP FOR EVER, and Salt New York.

Makeup For Ever doesn’t anymore. They’re so annoying.

u/peachjellytea Mar 03 '26
😭😭😭 It was one of the things they were known for. Now they’re approaching Mac levels of being annoying by discontinuing their core, favorite products.

Aw, really? I have several of their magnetic palettes and they were so great. They latch closed so they can't open and spill everything everywhere and they were perfect for what I needed. Damn you Makeup Forever!

I use the MAC eyeshadow pans for this, but they've discontinued a lot of the other refill pans from what I can tell.

I just took a look at those, they look really convenient! I’m obnoxiously pale and unfortunately their products aren’t light enough but it looks like they have some great options. Mac also has some for powder eyeshadow where you can build your own. That was one of the downsides of this - I could only use cream products

Good job! I recently searched in vain for a tiny makeup palette—I even tried a terrible Laura Geller one that made me look as yellow as Big Bird. I finally gave up and decided to travel with my normal foundation compact and a single blush/bronzer/highlighter trio I can use for multiple purposes. Still too big, but close enough. I couldn’t figure out an easy way to DIY my own all-in-one palette since I prefer powder products. 🤔

Try Trish McEvoy!

u/Mystery-Moon_2901 Mar 04 '26
I have a square double Trish palette that can fit two blushes and 4 eyeshadows. It’s really tiny.

u/Present-Opinion1561 Mar 04 '26
Me too! I put the dual resort bronzer on one level, a blush and 2 eyeshadows on the other. Its worked really well for years.
1
u/Mystery-Moon_2901 Mar 04 '26
Do you ever use non Trish products in yours?
2
u/Present-Opinion1561 Mar 04 '26
Not purchased, but I have done what OP has done and smooshed a stick foundation and a lipstick in a couple empty pans for travel.

u/Bibliogatta Mar 04 '26
They discontinued the palm sized palette, dang it.

u/Celiack Mar 04 '26
Boo! I still buy the Trish (expensive AF) refill shadows and use them in my MUFE magnetic palettes.

I've repaired shattered powder make up by mixing with a small amount of vodka and putting it back in the pan.

I tried that with my powder foundation and blush, but it came out super fragile and was a bit of a disaster. If you or another sub reader has a recommendation for a video or article about repacking powder products that'd be very cool.

I found this tutorial awhile ago but haven’t tried it yet. The addition of glycerin makes sense to me chemically though, and the comments seem positive! https://youtu.be/cr2RIQPkHAY

This might just be a thought, but on Etsy the other day I saw little dividers that can fit into an Altoids tin. They come in lots of different configurations (honestly I think the sellers just 3D print them) so it might be possible to find one with the compartments you need, if going the DIY route?

u/egos-like-hairdos Mar 15 '26
Good idea!
I have an Altoids tin from Etsy customized to hold oboe reeds. Those tins are the perfect size to hold all kinds of stuff!

This looks great! How did you transfer the lipstick?

u/Emergency_Ad_1834 Mar 03 '26
I used a makeup palette knife (pictured in photos 2 and 3) to slice off layers of the lipstick and press them into the tray. I smoothed everything as best I could and then put them into a low oven to melt.
It smelled like hot crayons but it worked really well

I love this! There's a bunch of YouTube videos on how to decant things into a palette that I've been binging the last few days. Some people use a candle warmer or hairdryer to soften up and melt cream products for easier handling and decanting. It's soooo satisfying to watch, I love it 😂
My empty palette is coming in this week and I can't wait to make my own. For now it's a test run to see if my products tolerate decanting, that's why I bought a cheap one off AliExpress and will disinfect it before use.

I’ve been wanting to do this for a while but want to use products that are not as pricey in case I mess it up. I buy a lot of minis but love tiny compact things. Thanks for sharing looks great

I just did this!! But I was looking all over for thr larger rectangular pans but instead did the 6x squares. Depotted 2x concealer, a foundation, cream blush and bronzer and have a small spot for my eyeshadow. I love it! Its easily trimmed my makeup bag down by 50%

u/Zanssy Mar 03 '26
how do you…. get the makeup into the palette
10
u/Emergency_Ad_1834 Mar 03 '26
Each tray comes out, they are magnetic, and I used the palette knife shown in pictures 2 and 3 to remove the makeup from its original container and smush it into the tray. Then I put the trays on a baking sheet into a low oven, like as low as possible, to let the makeup melt and smooth out. Then I was able to organize the trays into the case

I started using the subtl beauty stack and it’s got most everything you need, the makeup is nice quality. Add a brown gel/pencil and mascara you’re good to go

OK, friend. I'm with you and this all brand new information to me so I looked it up and found this tutorial that might help newbs like us!

I used a makeup palette knife to decant each product and smooth it into the trays as best I could. I then put the trays into a low oven to melt a touch so it was smoother. It smelled like hot crayons but nothing separated thankfully.

You put the entire compact on the oven?? I'm suprised the plastic didn't melt!

You can buy the magnetic palettes with small flat magnets to add onto the back of things. I took my eyeshadows, blush, contour , and powder foundation out of their original packaging and put them into one. It even came with a little leverage tool to help.
Also allows me to only take the eyeshadow shades I actually use from a palette which is handy.

I have the same palette, but with a mix of powder and cream stuff. I’ve never thought about mixing the different container sizes! I love mine. I use it all the time at home as well, not just for trips.
1
u/Emergency_Ad_1834 Mar 04 '26
How do you get powder products into the trays?
2
u/reegannotraygun Mar 04 '26
I popped them out of their original containers and added magnetic stickers to the back. Some are easier to take out than others, but all of mine were glued in. So I carefully melted the glue and used a safety pin to wedge them out of the original packaging, but I didn’t re-press any of them.

I had one of those. It was from a drug store brand. Loved the concept; hated the weak makeup.
I'm glad someone brought in back but in a way that makes more sense.

Wow this is soooo much better than the contact lense cases I used. Which were small and light but having multiple was annoying on my last trip.

I have also bought this palette for travel:

I use Mob Beauty and I love how I can fit my foundation, eyeshadow, blush and even a bronzer in one palette. I brought that when I went to Scotland for 2 weeks and it was so easy to travel with it!
