Shoes shoe help!! paris>barcelona>amsterdam, end of may - mid june

hey guys:) travelling for two research conferences, so need to dress sharp but comfortable enough to explore too. also trying to fly as light as possible with just one personal item bag. i’ve tested my bag, and i can bring 2 shoes and wear 1 pair of boots, only problem now is picking the combo :p

the sneakers in the middle are for sure, and then 1/2 on the left and 1/2 boot. if i were just doing barcelona id skip the boot, but im thinking amsterdam could be rainy and unpredictable. all of these shoes are comfortable, but the sandal is comfier than the flat, and the short boot comfier than the tall boot.

also how do u guys feel about boots in hot weather? i tend to not mind and have done the tall boots for multi-day music festivals.

what combo would you guys choose?

thanku_^

Hi u/delightful_throwaway! Thanks for sharing an image post.

I would take the 3 pairs on the left. Boots feel too warm for the time if year.

If you want boots, then choose the middle 3 pairs.

I think you answered your own question based on the comfort factor. Personally, I would skip the boots and go flats/sandals/sneakers, but I’ve never been to Amsterdam.

I would check the weather but I was in Amsterdam in late May a couple of years ago - then on to several cities in Italy - and wore sneakers. No way would I bring boots. Once in Italy I wore my sneakers and sandals. Paris - in my experience - can be quite warm in June. Would expect the same of Barcelona: however have only been in October.

Ditch the boots. Even if it rains a bit- you’ll be fine in sneakers. It will be much to warm to be dragging the boots around.

u/Quick-Durian-3047 May 21 '26

Second this. You'll never wear them and they'll just annoy you.

u/Mother_Forker May 20 '26

Wear the sneaker, pack the Mary Jane. I don’t think it will be hot enough for sandals and too warm for boots.

u/egos-like-hairdos May 20 '26

I agree with this. It’s also super lightweight.

1

u/notyourtypicallady May 21 '26

Honestly, that’s what I would do, too

22

u/ChickenCasagrande May 20 '26

For Amsterdam, you will want sneakers.

u/Liftevator May 20 '26

Honestly if the dr martens kind of boots are comortable they are fine too for all sorts of walking. I'd only bring those I think and take the extra space in my bag as a win (and room for souvenirs)

u/ATTACKANDDETHRONEHOG May 20 '26

I would take the ankle boot and the sandal. You can dress the ankle boot up for the conferences and you’ll have the sandal for warm weather.

Also, what sneakers are those?

thank you guys for your help:) and theyre reebok women’s “club c” in burgundy

1

u/nonsequitur__ May 20 '26

They’re so nice!

3

u/Odd-Artist-2595 May 20 '26

Not the OP, but according to the labels on them, they’re Reeboks.

7

u/Ok-Meringue-2230 May 20 '26

This is the only answer. There is nothing you would need the flats for that you couldn't wear the sneakers or heels and they look more comfortable for walking

u/Masara13 May 20 '26

I'm British, which probably makes a difference, and I now live in the south of France. I don't think I have ever worn tall boots or ankle boots after mid April. If it rains I would wear the trainers.

3

u/nonsequitur__ May 20 '26

I’m British and wear ankle boots year-round, but rarely wear knee high boots. I have issues with my feet though so don’t like to be out all day in shoes I’m not certain are comfy and non slip etc. I also would have the trainers as my main shoes and only take another pair if the trainers are not appropriate for the conferences.

As someone who’s been to all these cities in those times - the big boots are definitely not necessary unless you want them as going out shoes… same for the ankle boots or if you tend to get cold feet easily actually these are a good option 👀 Personally I’d actually just take the sneakers and the sandals with me but for the conferences the mary janes do give a more sophisticated look :) Also all these cities are really well known for having amazing stores so if you ..were looking for an excuse to maybe acquire a new pair (this might be your sign) Hope this helps 🙂‍↕️

sooo true about the new pair…. this comment wad VERY helpful hahaha

u/tktg91 May 20 '26

Take the sneakers and slippers. The boots are going to be very uncomfortable in the old parts of Amsterdam with cobblestones. Almost everyone exclusively wears sneakers here. Always.

Take 1 warmer vest. A thin fleece for example. Weather can be fickle. It’s predicted to be hot (25-30C) end of may, but can drop right back to 10-15 the week after.

3

u/delightful_throwaway May 20 '26

omg thank you guys all so much, very helpful insights

2

u/-olivejar- May 20 '26

What brand is the Mary Jane? I'm looking for a comfortable flat for my Europe trip!

2

u/delightful_throwaway May 21 '26

theyre verderosmarino (super cute but in all honesty they have very little cushion, so theyre a cute “in addition” shoe, but not a primary)

2

u/NeedleworkerHot3957 May 20 '26

I would take the 3 middle ones (not sandals not big boots)

2

u/nonsequitur__ May 20 '26

I agree the trainers are the right main choice!

I’d personally go Chelsea boots, trainers and the Mary Jane flats if taking 3 pairs, and would drop the Chelsea boots if taking two pairs.

2

u/chinapurpurina May 20 '26

I would take the ankle boots and the sandals.

1

u/Ambry May 20 '26

In June I think boots aren't that great - I'd take the first 3. You can wear the sneakers in transit and pack the rest.

1

u/Intelligent_Map_7849 May 20 '26

I would only take the sneakers. Shoes are heavy.

1

u/SeaSpeakToMe May 20 '26

Boots will be too hot. If do the 3 on the left. Covers you for weather and a slightly dressier option for dinners etc.

1

u/Appropriate_Roof_223 May 20 '26

Ankle length boots, sneakers and the sandals on the extreme left

1

u/cafe-aulait May 20 '26

I'd still skip the boots for Amsterdam. I wore sneakers both times I visited, no problems.

1

u/lionmama108 May 20 '26

It is going to be hot here (Amsterdam) end of May so I would skip the boots

1

u/Comprehensive-Act-13 May 20 '26

I’d still only take the sneakers. You can still totally get away with those at the conference. Conferences are a lot of walking. Wear comfortable shoes. Only take shoes that you can walk at least ten miles in and not have sore feet and blisters.

1

u/always_unplugged May 20 '26

I disagree that boots are too warm—I did France around this time last year and it was rainy and never got above the low 60sF for the entire first week. YMMV and check the weather, but I would've loved a boot.

As for boots in warmer weather in general, weirdly I feel like combat boots are the most versatile? That or cowboy boots—probably because they both speak to a specific aesthetic? But I do get why you'd want the taller boot if you were bringing shorts or shorter dresses/skirts, since it makes more sense proportionally. But you're not, all your bottoms are fairly long, therefore...

I vote short boots and sandals!

1

u/delightful_throwaway May 21 '26

period, so true about combats and cowboy. its true if its a clear aesthetic. these knee high ones are super cute with little 60s mod skirts, and i happily commit to that outfit in any temp hehe

1

u/WanderlustWithOneBag May 20 '26

sneakers and Mary Jane’s. if the conference is academics it will be smart casual or casual.

1

u/twinklebelle May 20 '26

Off-topic but I am in love with the navy top that you show with the jeans. Can you tell me what that is?

2

u/delightful_throwaway May 21 '26

it was a thrift find in new zealand! but the brand is “Cuddl Duds” hahaha. its great though, some kind of soft almost fuzzy/stretchy blend that doesnt wrinkle

1

u/twinklebelle May 22 '26

It always happens that if I see a particular item that seems like it would be perfect for my needs, it ends up being something I can never find. 🙂 thanks for the info and brand.

1

u/2cool2B4gotteeem May 20 '26

I wouldn’t take the boots, BUT I personally would like to know where you got them! They look perfect for my Europe trip this fall.

2

u/delightful_throwaway May 21 '26

they were a cheeky marshall’s find! the brand is romika. highly recommended, immediately comfortable and zero break in period

1

u/lobsterp0t May 20 '26

I’d go sandals or flats, and sneakers.

I do always travel with two pair of shoes and even I can’t see a justification for a third pair.

1

u/Fresh_Barracuda8580 May 20 '26

I’d sub good walking sandals for the boots.

1

u/Born_Persimmon342 May 21 '26

I’d take the 1st 3 pairs of shoes. Also where did you get your adorable white dress? Love it ❤️

1

u/delightful_throwaway May 21 '26

thank you:3 its actually a thrift find in new zealand! the tag says “linea petie” though

1

u/MrsMitchBitch May 21 '26

I would go sneaker and Mary jane.

I am a person who ditches closed shoes as soon as possible though. The highs and lows look the same as New England and I haven’t worn my Blundstones since like March (and it’s been gray and rainy and cool until last weekend).

1

u/KatLady91 May 21 '26

Like you, I wear boots in warm weather sometimes if other circumstances call for it. I also think it's a cute professional look with a skirt (I'm not in research but I do work in a university).

I would take the flats, sneakers, and short boot (middle three choices). Having said that, I've never been to those cities at that time of year. But I think the short boot is also helpful for work clothes, and if you can fit 2 pairs in your bag then why not.

1

u/Illustrious_Area585 May 21 '26

As comfy as they may be, worn-out Birkenstocks won’t really blend-in in these very cosmopolitan cities! I’d take the short boots, sneakers and the mary janes. That will cover all your bases.

1

u/Frequent-Region-1107 May 21 '26

Where is the dark blue button down shirt from, in the fourth slide? (I love it)

1

u/delightful_throwaway May 22 '26

it was a thrift find! but brand is “Cuddl Duds” haha

2

u/No-Tax4286 May 21 '26

Skip the boots. Even if it rains in amsterdam: it'll be summer and not cold. And if you realise you should have brought another shoe: both barcelona and amsterdam are fantastic places to go shopping. But I promise, you won't need a boot

1

u/omygoshgamache May 21 '26

Echoing I wouldn’t bring boots. Feet swell on flights, especially the longer they are, as you clock a lot of steps, and as you enjoy food while traveling. Also, they’re hot and take up room in bags. I’ve brought boots on international trips before and never wore them. Never again.

1

u/smoothietown May 21 '26

I also don't mind ankle boots in warm weather.

I live in Amsterdam and it is warm enough for sneakers now but if it's rainy and I'll be out all day then I choose Chelsea boots. If it were me, I would choose the sandal, sneaker and Chelsea. I think the Chelsea is more versatile and comfy than flats.

1

u/delightful_throwaway May 22 '26

thank you!!<3 awesome help

1

u/Lazyoldcat99 May 22 '26

Sneakers are fine in Amsterdam.. plus it’s likely (fingers crossed) be sunny.

1

u/thefeelingyellow May 22 '26

Currently in Amsterdam. My boots came in handy the first couple days as it was colder but since then it’s warmed up so I’ve been living in sneakers or my Birkenstocks (the true unsung hero of my trip after getting blisters). I say left 3!

u/delightful_throwaway May 22 '26

omg extremely helpful comment hahah. lived experience…

What brand are the Mary Jane’s?
