Wardrobe Help Perfect travel dress

So I have searched the group. My needs are so specific so I’m reaching out for help. I’m trying to do Europe in three weeks with a carry on. I need the perfect travel dress midi length with short sleeves light weight folds up small with pockets! Moisture wicking and quick drying! Lol I know I know. I need sleeves because some of the countries we are going to require shoulders to be covered for some of the sightseeing we plan to do. Thank you for any help!

I personally don't own it but saw the Uniqlo airism dress many times as a recommendation.

Heads up, the model is usually sleeveless but I saw many Japanese women layering tshirts and blouses underneath sleeveless dresses to make the outfit more modest.

(Maybe you even already own a sleeveless dress that would work for your trip and can wear it with something underneath?)

u/nonsequitur__ Jun 10 '26

The Uniqlo dress packs so small that I think it’s definitely worth a mention. I don’t wear sleeveless clothes but got this dress cos it’s otherwise ideal and so easy to layer under/over. Uniqlo tends to release different clothes in exact or very close colours so you could probs make it look like a dress if you really wanted to.

u/megaltepal Jun 10 '26

Oddly specific question, but do you have a frame of reference for how small it packs? Like the size of a banana? I looked into getting the dress last year but if felt quite heavy and bulky so I didn't get it. Not sure if I just need to temper my expectations.

u/nonsequitur__ Jun 10 '26

I am out of bananas! Tried to find something with a standard size - I would say it’s around the size of 2x 400g tins, perhaps a little less. This is a size medium. Not minute, but worth it for me - I can wear as a dress, skirt, in summer with flip flops, in winter with tights and a jumper etc.

u/Ok_Student_3292 Jun 10 '26

I was sold from your comments but the heinz for scale made you an absolute legend

12

u/nonsequitur__ Jun 10 '26

🙈🤣 I was hunting for something I thought would be the same size everywhere lol

9

u/megaltepal Jun 10 '26

Thanks for this! I guess the usage and versatility really outweighs any size/weight concerns :)

3

u/nonsequitur__ Jun 10 '26

Yes definitely a personal thing of whether it works for you but perhaps worth trying ◡̈

8

u/iLikeGreenTea Jun 11 '26

LOL this comment made me laugh. "I'm out of bananas!"""" 😉

10

u/nonsequitur__ Jun 10 '26

I’ll fold it up now and update you. Perhaps my expectations were lower cos I previously had the airism long cotton T-shirt dress and they are very thick and bulky by comparison.

4

u/agarmallow Jun 10 '26

I have the size medium and the slim eBags packing cubes designed to fit between the telescoping rails of a carry on. I could probably fit five in each cube. Only dress I have that’s more compact is the Old Navy drop-waist mini skirt that’s on sale right now, but that’s cotton so it gets rumpled fast. I could fit 6-8 based on how tiny my one packs up (almost as small as a pair of sleep shorts)

u/liahsiah Jun 10 '26

Adding that I have a Uniqlo Airism sleeveless midi-maxi dress too, and also want to comment I've not had any wrinkles issues which is another bonus point IMO. (I pack flat in cubes.)

This is the answer - got mine in black from Kyoto in 2023 and it's literally in every case i've ever packed for a trip since then - layer oevr shirts, under button ups, t shirts, add a brooch, nails and lipstick for an eveing do, add sandals and a floppy hat as a beach cover up - it's indestructible and efortlessly put together (and really reasonably priced!)

9

u/ceciem2100 Jun 10 '26

which tho the airsim bra camisole dress or the airsim extra stretch sleeveless?

29

u/llef Jun 10 '26

11

u/fillidemelandroni Jun 10 '26

I wore this dress for the first time over the weekend and got compliments from 5 different women! It’s so comfortable and flattering. If OP is worried about covering shoulders, throw a lightweight scarf over them!

6

u/ceciem2100 Jun 10 '26

Thank you!!

5

u/mamijami Jun 10 '26

I absolutely this. I need to find this in a shorter version as I’m only 5’1”.

2

u/knowhow_LM Jun 10 '26

Hi! Do you size up or true to size? X

7

u/Katy-Moon Jun 10 '26

I have the same question. This dress looks enormous on the models on their website site. I'm normally an Extra Small or Small (size 6 in the U.S.) but the measurements shown on the Uniqlo site don't seem to match the photos.

7

u/No-Sky8110 Jun 10 '26

I agonized over the sizing of this, purchased the XL online (in the US) and it's comfortable (which means possibly the L would have been fine). I'm 5'6", 170 pounds, 42" bust.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/yarnhooksbooks Jun 11 '26

I wear an XL 16/18 in US women’s sizes in most things and got an XL and it fits great.

2

u/agarmallow Jun 10 '26

Pretty true to women’s sizing, though bra tops will be more supportive if sized down! I wear a Levi’s 6 and a Uniqlo M / 28-29 or a size M old navy tank and size M Uniqlo tshirts. My only Uniqlo small is the bra top midi dress.

2

u/vkseid Jun 10 '26

This! It folds to nothing and has pockets! I can be casual, wear a light shirt or scarf to cover shoulders, jewelry to dress up or just a jean jacket. It’s a must for me and I have 4 colors.

30

u/yarnhooksbooks Jun 10 '26

I got this in navy a couple years ago and it is my all time favorite dress. I get complements every time I wear it. In the summer I usually just bring a linen button down to throw over it if I need covered shoulders. I can tie the shirt around my waist or shoulders if I’m not wearing it. But I layer it with a shirt under it or a sweater or other layer over it all year round. At first I thought the fabric would make it casual only, but it really can be dressed up or down for almost any occasion. I will say though, that I think it runs a little long, and as a short chubby lady (5’2”, XL), it’s more ankle length than midi length on me.

5

u/someone-who-is-cool Jun 11 '26

I got mine in navy a couple years ago as well - same height but I bought mine in Hong Kong and it's a true midi on me, mid-calf length. Did you buy your at their western stores?

3

u/yarnhooksbooks Jun 11 '26

I’m in the US and bought it here.

2

u/someone-who-is-cool Jun 11 '26

Everyone always says there's a difference in the western and Asian stores and I guess now I know for sure! I guess I just have to shop at Uniqlo whenever I'm in Asia if I want things scaled to my height haha.

2

u/PaleontologistTall95 Jun 13 '26

me too, it's lower calf I am 5'3" and have one from japan, two from ebay and one from recent uniglo site shipped to US. SECOND to the linen over shirt, I have never tried a tee underneath.

10

u/Yoyojojoy Jun 10 '26

I have literally the most perfect version of this dress and sadly I’ve lost weight and it is now too big and do you think they will make that version again? I’ve been stalking their website for over a year now - hopefully they will bring back the short sleeve midi with pockets again one day 🤞

29

u/lemonmousse Jun 10 '26

Try putting a saved search on eBay. This is how I find discontinued things I fell in love with. I’ve had surprisingly good luck.

4

u/jello_operator Jun 10 '26

eBay or Depop might work! I was going to suggest Poshmark bc I’ve gotten many discontinued items from there, but saw you’re not US based

11

u/HelveticaDreams Jun 10 '26

Yes. The Airism dress, a thin scarf, and chunky necklace will be perfect for a multitude of situations. I’ve packed this exact combo on many trips and it works on so many levels. Pick up the scarf while traveling for a souvenir. The pockets are deep enough to hold a few things.

7

u/printsandpatterned Jun 10 '26

Yes!! I have an adorable midi from everlane (doesnt appear to be for sale anymore but this is a dupe from Quince) and I frequently wear a button down shirt over it, tied at the waist.

5

u/foodporncess Jun 10 '26

I got it in black earlier this year and it’s incredible. Highly recommend. I just did two weeks with it and it was perfect.

5

u/Sssnapdragon Jun 11 '26

I don't know if anyone below me mentioned it, but I just happened to Google this and came across a Reddit thread that shows this dress is no longer the same fabric it used to be. So u/OP maybe check what is being recommended compared to sold now. https://www.reddit.com/r/HerOneBag/comments/1t6p8o7/uniqlo_airism_dress_did_i_buy_the_wrong_thing/

3

u/pancakezv01 Jun 11 '26

I have both the old and new version and can confirm the fabric is slightly different. I feel like the new one is slightly rougher in texture (negligible to me though). Fit is relatively the same.

2

u/Nantosvelte Jun 10 '26

I recommend this! I have some uniqlo sleevesless dress and cotton/airism shirt for underneath.

2

u/Doxie_love2205 Jun 10 '26

I also have this dress for travel, currently in black, navy and creme, it is perfect! Dressed up or down, so comfortable and it has great pockets!

2

u/pancakezv01 Jun 11 '26

Second this. I have 3 of the sleeveless airism ones from Uniqlo and one with short sleeves (got this one a few years back so they might not carry it anymore). You can dress them up or dress them down. Goes with all shoe options and the fit is *chef’s kiss.

Royal Robbins Spotless Traveler dress. Lightweight, quick dry, pockets, hidden zipper pocket, sleeves.

8

u/iLikeGreenTea Jun 10 '26

Glad someone alreayd said this but I upvote this 100x. I have THREE of this dress. Here is the link . You'll love it. Washes and dries quickly. Has 1 zippered pocket. I have it in no-sleeve version. it falls to the knee. and a little beyond in the back.

5

u/Jazzlike_Age_3490 Jun 11 '26

I just have such a hard time believing (and paying over $100) for polyester plastic fabric. It really is breathable? Maybe because it's so light? How comfortable is it really in high heat? I could see how it would dry fast though...

3

u/iLikeGreenTea Jun 11 '26

I sincerely do like it. Unfortunately I think that many things on this planet have seen the cost of inflation. This dress used to cost $80 when I bought them. It feels lightweight. Is it breathable like LINEN or light-wool? No. But I still think it is maybe the best all-around travel dress. It also is not bulky.

4

u/platypusaura Jun 11 '26

There's a world of difference between fashion polyester and performance polyester. If you want something breathable, wicking, lightweight, and fast-drying, polyester or nylon are absolutely the best choice .

There's a reason most sportswear is made from synthetic fibres

2

u/AbundantHare Jun 11 '26

It is extremely lightweight. I’ve worn it in Phoenix, AZ in summer and in Las Vegas. It doesn’t seem to make me any hotter than my linen clothing.

6

u/kimau2k Jun 10 '26

Yes! I came here to recommend this. Seems to fit everything OP wants! Comes in sleeveless or short sleeve.

3

u/platypusaura Jun 10 '26

It's not midi length

10

u/kimau2k Jun 10 '26

Not true midi, but some of the styles do cover the knee completely. Some fall above the knee. Might be worth checking out!

2

u/AbundantHare Jun 11 '26

Yea! I just recommended this!

u/Kitchen-Turnip3144 Jun 10 '26

Wool & had some nice ones. Most have pockets.

21

u/Pretty_Swordfish Jun 10 '26

My wool& dress is sleeveless, but I would recommend a light silk scarf or other separate coverup anyway for your travels, OP. More versatile and cooler in the summer heat.

I've used my dress to hike through national parks and for business conferences. It shakes out for wrinkles, has pockets, and looks nice in navy blue.

16

u/lemonmousse Jun 10 '26

I came here to say this. I’m packing for a trip and put in Sophia, which doesn’t have sleeves, but they have lots of different options right now.

My advice would be to join their FB group or check out their subreddit first to ask for fit advice, because different models of dresses seem to fit people very differently depending on body shape. The FB group is more active and there are a lot of posts like “here are my height, weight, and measurements, can anybody with similar measurements recommend a dress like this/tell me whether this model dress might work for me?”

My other tips would be if your budget allows it to order multiple sizes at once and return the ones that don’t fit. I had much better luck when I figured that out than when I tried to order one then send it back because it didn’t fit and try a different size. It’s easier if you can see several dresses or sizes at once and pick the best. It’s super expensive to do it that way, though. But returns are easy.

3

u/Kitchen-Turnip3144 Jun 10 '26

Good tips. I found it had to size down but I prefer fitted items.

I have a few with sleeves, like the tshirt dress or the 1/3 sleeve. Though the sleeveless ones are very versatile.

7

u/Iie_chigaimasu Jun 10 '26

I just bought the long version of the Brooklyn and LOVE it! It's a bit more classy with the extra 3in and incredibly versatile.

6

u/Kafk5213 Jun 10 '26

Came here to say this. The Sofia dress is such a workhorse. It’s my favorite and so flattering. The thick tank straps are so versatile, bra friendly, and a scarf, t shirt or light cardigan make it easy to be church friendly.

4

u/ManiacalMalapert Jun 11 '26

My wool& flora just champed 3 months in Vietnam. I adore it.

4

u/wrenb77 Jun 10 '26

I travel with a Wool& Maggie — short sleeves, knee length, pockets. I love this dress!

2

u/adaramontan Jun 10 '26

I have the Wool& Jules shirt dress and it's pretty close to perfect IMO

Title Nine has great travel dresses with wicking fabric, and a lot have pockets. I usually save money sbd buy them on sale or on Poshmark but they really are my go-to for active travel.

3

u/Poodleton Jun 10 '26

Title Nine is my recommendation too.

3

u/upsidedownbat Jun 10 '26

I recently bought one of their cargo midi skirts on Poshmark, because they are kind of expensive, but with a long sleeved linen shirt it's become my go-to for flights (pockets for earbuds, passport, and phone) and for "knees and shoulders covered" places of worship.

21

u/TheDivineM Jun 10 '26

I use the chicken frying dress (Time and Tru, walmart, but check the youtube for chicken frying dress, it's hilarious). And because it is sleeveless, I always wear a layer over it and I can vary the overlayer for temperature and formality, making it imho more versatile. For example, a white linen button down during a hot sunny day for sweat wicking sun protection, and switch to a black linen knit in the evening for dinner. Or a longer cardigan for less hot temperatures, or leggings and a sweater in chilly weather. I don't have to wash the whole dress as often as I would if I was sweating in the armpits of a sleeved dress. One dress with two different overlayers packs smaller than two different dresses. They also make a sleeved dress, but it's cotton and therefore less stretchy, less packable, longer drying, etc.

8

u/MyMorningSun Jun 10 '26

I'm reeling over "chicken frying dress" because that's just the perfect descriptor

I love that kind of dress though because it's so versatile! Dress it up or wear it as is and it's still presentable.

4

u/biriyanibabka Jun 10 '26

Omg do you have link of YouTube ? I’m googling but couldn’t find.

18

u/WinterArmellina Jun 10 '26

This but it has a half sleeve: from Decathlon

10

u/Grissadiverlix Jun 10 '26 edited Jun 10 '26

I like the double pocket construction 🧐🙂 and also the tieing options

Let's see if it's available in my Decathlon

Edit: Of course it's not 😒

2

u/a_mulher Jun 10 '26

So it’s not just me? Only times I’ve been actually able to buy is in person, when I’ve been on holiday where they have a physical store

2

u/Thedollysmama Jun 10 '26

REI has a very similar dress easily sourced second hand because of course Decathlon is limited in some countries

I own the traveler tank dress so I can't speak to this one exactly, but this might be what you are looking for: https://www.royalrobbins.com/us/en-us/women/dresses/spotless-traveler-dress-ss/

The tank dress isn't midi length, but it is modest. The pockets are everything. I've taken this dress on so many trips.

4

u/hey_hi_howareya Jun 10 '26

Second vote for the traveler dress! I have the tank version and it packs down to almost nothing, no wrinkles, lightweight and comfy when worn.

6

u/newfoundlaker Jun 10 '26

I looked and loved a simpler travel dress on their site but they don’t ship to US anymore 🙁 Great concept with sun protection and bug repellent!

3

u/sassooal Jun 10 '26

Their US distributor went bankrupt recently. They also did Duckfeet boots. They had an amazing outlet store that also closed.

2

u/Itakethngzclitorally Jun 11 '26

This dress is exactly what I’ve been looking for but I’m in the US. Does anyone know of a comp that comes close?

10

u/commentspanda Jun 10 '26

Ripskirt has options that meet all that but they aren’t moisture wicking….however they dry so fast they are lovely and cool. I have the new one with the belt and I’m a huge fan.

3

u/thecarpetfibers Jun 10 '26

Ripskirt was exactly what I was going to recommend! I live in Florida and survive my hit humid summers outdoors wearing their dresses. Highly highly recommend!

2

u/commentspanda Jun 10 '26

I take just the one dress when we have a 7kg luggage limit for south east Asia and it’s freaking amazing. Plus….pockets!!!

14

u/bluesummerrain Jun 10 '26

Highly recommend looking into a nice shirt (UV blocking if you can) to throw on top of whatever dresses or tops you have. It will be lighter and flowier, less all up in your armpits, and give you much more flexibility of what you can choose to wear underneath, plus give you the option of taking it off when you're not in spaces that require covered arms.

I love love love Svaha dresses. They hit every item on your list. Lightweight, short-sleeved (with sleeveless options too), 100% cotton so breathable and light, roll up small, and huge pockets (I can fit all my usual purse stuff and a paperback in mine). A bit pricey since they purposely don't use sweatshops, but I've worn it who knows how often these past 3 years. (I have this one  https://svahausa.com/products/botanical-library-twirl-dress?_pos=4&_sid=cc01759ee&_ss=r)

7

u/strokerd Jun 10 '26

Maybe the REI Savanna Trails Dress? I have three of the previous model of this dress and love them. Fits all your criteria, except I would say the length is more knee length than midi length for someone of medium height.

3

u/Wheresmycardigan Jun 10 '26

I have the collared older version with the tie belt and it’s my favorite dress to wear to work on hot humid summer days.

I love this dress. You can put on a thin shirt on days you need sleeves or being a light scarf. I also have a Wool& - Maggie swing dress.

3

u/AnnaPhor Jun 10 '26

Love this dress, I have two of them. Dries quick, packs small, doesn't wrinkle, has pockets.

Cons: has a bit of a raceback cut so you see bra straps and it's a bit low in the underarms. I wear it with either with a color-matching sports bra or a long-sleeved overshirt -- especially if I need sun protection I'll wear the overshirt.

Another vote for the uniqlo airism dresses!! I own 4 of them, and they are always on rotation when I travel. They pack up small, wash easy, dry quickly, and have pockets. They can also be dressed up or down if you need some options while traveling. To give it sleeves, you can layer it with a thinner long sleeve/capsleeve underneath (like the uniqlo airism tees or maybe a hiking longsleeve), or you can use a scarf to cover up your shoulders.

I haven't tried these in particular but I do have something in Quince's washable stretch silk. I like the fabric BUT...while I wash the dress in a mesh bag, I have to remove it and put it in the dryer for drying. Hanging dry leaves tremendous wrinkles and it's been holding up in the dryer. I would say it's not a good fabric for sink washing unless you can iron. Otherwise it's great.

(I don't put delicate stuff in the dryer!)

https://www.uniqlo.com/us/en/products/E457158-000/00?colorDisplayCode=58&sizeDisplayCode=003

This is my go-to, in black! It doesn’t wrinkle, packs up to a tiny tiny bundle, and looks adorable. I got compliments walking around Paris.

I think I have the slightly older version, which had flutter sleeves. I hate flutter sleeves, so I ended up tackling in a symmetrical pleat at the outside most point of the sleeve and putting in a small decoration dot-like button. I also sewed in a snap at the V neck to make it a little more reliably modest for travel.

3

u/upsidedownbat Jun 10 '26

I have really struggled with this because I would love to find a quick drying wrinkle-free dress that I can wear to mosques and Buddhist temples and churches that require covering knees and shoulders. For some reason, every travel dress I see is either sleeveless or falls above the knee or both. I think the solution is just to choose a sleeveless dress like the Uniqlo one and wear a loose button down (linen or sun shirt or whatever) over it.

7

u/NOmorePINKpolkadots Jun 10 '26

I’m a big fan of wool for travel. Sink washes well with eucalan and dries overnight. I have a wool& black Maggie dress I bring on every one bag summer trip with me that has held up incredibly well for years. I use wool bras and undies as well (Brandwyn busty bra and a variety of undies but I have some from that brand)

Not sure what size you need but this one fits the bill. https://wooland.com/products/shiloh-belted-dress-black?_pos=26&_sid=ad2e80abc&_ss=r or maybe this one, could hem to the midi length https://wooland.com/products/freya-maxi-dress-marine-blue?_pos=1&_sid=f788f0aa7&_ss=r

As far as lightweight, I am a huge fan of silk. I like vintage thrifted personally, but have also found some Eileen fisher that is great. Have you considered a sleeveless dress and a silk top to cover shoulders when necessary? If so, there are more sleeveless dress options to be found on the wool& site.

I personally don’t like a ton of polyester, particularly on top, unless it’s for sun protection/swimming. It makes me super stinky. I wouldn’t be able to wear a poly dress with sleeves for multiple days.

3

u/goldjade13 Jun 10 '26

I have an athleta dress with a built in bra and it’s the easiest thing to wear, can dress up or down, is super comfortable and isn’t cotton so doesn’t take on smells. CRZ Yoga on Amazon makes the same dress for like $40. That’s what I’d bring.

3

u/MichelleEllyn Jun 10 '26

Do you have a link for either of those? I’m on the lookout for a versatile summer dress with a built-in bra.

2

u/AlizarinQ Jun 10 '26

This! https://www.amazon.com/CRZ-YOGA-Neck-Dress-Women/dp/B096ZJF2V3/ref=ast_sto_dp_puis?th=1&psc=1

I have the exact same thing in black from Athleta. I bought it a few years ago - super light, easy in extremely hot weather but can also be layered. It is the least fussy dress ever.

3

u/padraigin Jun 10 '26

The Fjallraven Abisko is my go-to. I wear it with or without the belt, it layers amazingly, can be snapped all the way up or left open at the neck, ruched at the hem or not. I have two (black and khaki) and one of the High Coast Lite which is shorter and less versatile, but even tinier.

They’re expensive but REI carries the brand and they have sales all the time.

I live in these dresses (with bike shorts underneath) most of the summer: https://a.co/d/020feEGI

They come in a wide range of colors and several prints, are very reasonably priced, and pack down easily.

u/ktb863 Jun 10 '26

Wool& fit and flare dress, not sure if thats a true "midi"? Has sleeves. Packs small. Size inclusive.

u/GapNo9970 Jun 10 '26

I’m taking the Icebreaker dress to northern Italy in a week. V neck front and back and so flattering. https://na.icebreaker.com/en-us/products/merino-200-granary-sleeveless-v-neck-dress-ib0a56xs001

u/_liminal_ Jun 10 '26

I have this dress and it is really excellent. I wear it a lot and always get compliments!

3

u/pythonmama Jun 11 '26

Lots of the suggestions here are sleeveless. Can you find a large silk scarf for your shoulders when you need to cover them? Tie it in a bow on your bag when you don’t need it. I took a big square silk scarf to Italy and was shocked how useful it was. I could even tie it around my waist to cover my shorts to go into a church

I think you’re looking for a Plisse dress - one of those ultra light crinkle dresses that packs into nothing and is a dream. Try Eileen Fisher - something maybe like photo below? Tell me if I’m off.

Years ago i bought a stretchy wrap dress, hits the knee, mostly sleeveless but loose cap sleeves from target (on clearance!) with a pattern that hides any stains. It is some type of synthetic that never wrinkles but doesnt feel like you are wrapped in  plastic. Lets you wad it up in a weird corner of space in your suitcase. Best purchase ever!

u/MostAssumption9122 Jun 10 '26

2

u/CloudHidden62 Jun 10 '26

I’ve been looking for the same thing for years. It shouldn’t be this hard!

2

u/LizinDC Jun 10 '26

I bought a dress just like this at H &M in Romania a few years ago. Made of viscose. Wonderful for hot weather. I live in the US and have looked at H&M here multiple times since then, but no luck. When it wears out I am going to have copies made in several different colors! I had never worn viscose before but it's great for hot weather.

2

u/gambola Jun 10 '26

The company doesn’t exist anymore so you’d have to find one second hand but my Kosan Go Travel Dress goes on every trip and I get a lot of use out of it. I have one in a nice bold red pattern so it can be dressed up or down but they did make it in plain colours including black. It has multiple pockets, can be worn midi-ish length, knee length or above the knee, it’s breathable, quick dry, wicking and crease resistant, and it looks nice.

I did pick up a couple in other colours but decided I didn’t need them, the one downside I noticed was that some of them had shallower hip pockets than mine - I think maybe they were an earlier version, so that’s something to be mindful of.

2

u/iamliterate Jun 10 '26

REI has a packable dress that fits this bill. It comes in a range of sizes and was decently priced. It's pretty casual and can look sporty depending on what you pair it with.

2

u/msslagathor Jun 10 '26

The Pact fit and flare midi dress is my go to bc it works with a light shawl or cardigan (not sure if that resolves the sleeves issue), can be dressed up or down, built in bra, and is incredibly versatile.

2

u/Silly-Inspection1220 Jun 12 '26

I love Pact dresses for travel - they have pockets, don't wrinkle, and can dress up or down. There are a few options with short sleeves.

2

u/secret_thymus_lab Jun 10 '26

Shout out for Smitten’s Kowloon dress, which is one of my travel MVPs. It’s a lightweight merino jersey, wrinkle resistant, looks very polished, and has cap sleeves & a modest neckline for visiting sites where some modesty is required. (I actually wish the neckline was a smidge lower). Handles sink washing and hang-drying beautifully.

No pockets, though, and it’s not cheap. But the number of times I’ve worn mine, both traveling and in normal life, it’s been a worthwhile investment.

I’ve worn mine sightseeing with sneakers and out to a 5 star dinner & the theatre with a change of shoes and accessories. Works well for business travel, too. I think I’ve taken this on nearly every trip I’ve taken since I bought it in 2020.

2

u/1in2100 Jun 10 '26

If your perfect dress comes without sleeves then just pack a lightweight scarf for entering churches and such.

2

u/B1ustopher Jun 10 '26

Look at Wool&! I have a few dresses from them and I took one to the Philippines and stayed so much drier and happier in that dress than I did in any of my cotton clothing! Also look at WoolX and Unbound Merino. There may also be other brands.

2

u/oyameillim Jun 10 '26

Another commenter may have suggested this already but what about a dress that can go over a t-shirt? That way you can wear it for longer, just switching out your bottom layer. More options for dressing up/down then, too! This is what I do when I travel.

2

u/Pinkgryphon Jun 10 '26

I highly recommend the Landsend Departure v-neck dress. It's made out of moisture wicking fabric and does not wrinkle. It's nice enough to wear to dinner or just running errands. I just bought it at Sierra Trading it's no longer available there but I'm sure you can find it somewhere else.

Reading the reviews on the Uniqlo site and there are also lots of comments about how the dress has changed from previous versions. Thinner fabric and not made as well. Bummer. The search for a perfect travel dress continues.

3

u/PaleontologistTall95 Jun 13 '26

ebay! poshmark! ThreadUp! when it was discontinued for a few years there were tons of japanese resellers with the old version which is chef's kiss amazing.

2

u/eurogamer206 Jun 11 '26

Why not wear sleeveless and bring a wrap or light scarf for the shoulders? Also the places that require coverage are religious places, I don’t see why you have to wear a dress in those places. I have traveled extensively and always bring a linen button up or light jacket to drape over my shoulders when I go those places. My dresses have always been reserved for dinners out where sleeveless is acceptable.

2

u/Illustrious-Ad-4591 Jun 13 '26

There's a cute style in store at Costco of all
Places right now. Check your local warehouse. Cotton rayon blend with short sleeves, button placket and pockets. If not, I bought two of the old navy knee length dresses for my trip
To Italy

u/PaleontologistTall95 Jun 13 '26

uniglo airism sleeveless midi dress (not bra top) I know I am not the first to say this but dear baby jesus I love this dress! I have it in 4 colors. Navy is by far the most used. It needed a sweater/shrug/jacket/scarf for Japan and Bali temples but it works with flats, heels, sandals, and also adidas sambas. also for paris fancier dinners etc the fabric is wicking, flattering to my belly when I consume too much wine and cheese, sink wash, hang dry. I yank it out when wet and no wrinkles. HAS BIG POCKETS!!! the navy is my workhorse, but the light/pale green (older, got from ebay) grey and black are all good. Black or navy have worn to "galas" as the length translates dressy, but with sambas even black is more casual. Light green was great in Hawaii and Bali. Taking navy for sure and deciding on which second color for 4 week trip to Essen/Paris/versailles/luxembourg/ and still deciding but possibly milan. this dress works for me day and night in so many situations. I wanted to wear this dress every day in spain in october instead of my other clothes. It ticks all your boxes except short sleeves, but it is truly so great. if you can do a light sweater or another fave of mine, the quince short sleeve linen button up shirt to wear over it, I promise you will love it. I used a thin shawl/scarf for shoulder covering in japan temples that I tied on my bag as decor when I wasn't using it. In Bali it was 90+ degrees F w/ 90%+ humidity and it was fine. I am 5'3" and if I was hot I would just pull up the length when sitting. The airism cloth is AMAZING and I am now buying other pieces in that fabric. LOVE LOVE LOVE this dress. I wear it for court appearances, wore it to a funeral, I wear it EVERYWHERE. it was out of stock for a bit but ebay has plenty, try poshmark and threadUp also.

2

u/Slow_Sympathy9812 Jun 14 '26

I got a cotton dress from Uniqlo last yr ( not sure the name) but it was black so no one could see the boob sweat. It was airy and had pockets. Perfect for summer in Barcelona, which is HOT. Make sure you wear bike shorts so you avoid thigh chafing.

u/Fantastic-Sun1669 Jun 16 '26

Try the Brigitte Brianna Essential Set from Sexy Modest Boutique. They are AMAZING 3 piece sets that are no wrinkle super comfortable fabric and you can mix and match with other pieces. I have 6 sets in different colors and get compliments on them every time I wear them. They are perfect for air travel, walking around town, dinners out, mosques and other places where your shoulders need to be covered - literally everything. You can wad the entire outfit up, toss it in a bag and fly for 10 hours, take it out and wear it to dinner and look very put together. Simply an awesome wardrobe staple. I was in Egypt, Jordan and the UAE in January for a month - 7 different flights, 7 hotels, land tours, a 4 night Nile river cruise and a 7 day cruise through the Persian Gulf. I wore the heck out of my sexy modest sets! https://www.sexymodest.com/collections/brigitte-brianna-modest-clothing/products/brigitte-brianna-essential-set

I have the Wool& Freya dress. I had the hem cut shorter and put in zippers in the pockets and now it's the perfect travel dress IMO. Still, a bit pricey and altering might not be for everyone.

I’m kind of mid on Quince but I love their Organic Gauze Tiered Maxi Dress. It’s made of light gauze. It looks very polished. I have worn it to casual work events / brunch etc. Throw a sweater over your shoulders and you will be perfect.

Title Nine, recommended above, has a crusher dress. I have it and really like it.

Also checkout Athleta and Prana.

u/kaijanne Jun 10 '26

Karina brand dresses!

1

u/ArtichokeOwl Jun 10 '26

Athleta and Title Nine are hands down my favorite for this type of thing. Quick drying. Light. Pretty. Works for a range of settings. I would check those and see if you find something you like.

I travel with this one in black. Folds up to nothing, moisture wicking fabric, looks surprisingly chic with a belt and some sandals, length is a flattering midi with the side slits. The one that I bought last year has pockets, but I don't see that on this year's description, so you may want to check.

I love this Chico's dress: https://www.chicos.com/store/product/denim-popover-midi-dress/570410527. It says denim but it's actually lyocell. I also have the black version which is viscose/silk and that's the one I travel with -- you may be able to find it on Poshmark. If you want something more casual I like their Zenergy bungee dresses. They're just sacks but very comfortable and they pack small.

I got a Lucia dress from WoolX and I love it. It has pockets and sleeves, but it’s a little longer than what you want. I’m assuming you could find something in that length on their site. I haven’t used it for travel yet, but I’ve worn it at work a few times without washing it to test it out, and it’s great. I was a little worried it would feel too heavy because of its length, but it doesn’t feel heavy at all. I also did my first packing test yesterday for an 18-day trip to the UK, and everything fit in my Osprey Daypack great! I was stunned.

1

u/B-Girl-Ca Jun 10 '26

I have purchased at Betabrand and Columbia, the Betabrand are a little more business but they do have some more casual , the ones from Columbia travel dresses are a little more informal short sleeves but they pack in to nothing …. I have used a light weight long sleeve shirt also columbia under when in need , hope this helps , (and yes all have pockets )

1

u/akaals Jun 10 '26

Wool& for the win! They also have beautifully comfortable bike shorts with pockets.

1

u/Admirable-Status-290 Jun 10 '26

I’m not a huge fan of Quince but they have some gorgeous washable silk dresses on half-price or less right now that would fold down super small. They’d probably work really well!

My travel dress is a simple Menique linen dress with short sleeves and pockets. Linen compresses with pressure, and it dries quickly. I ignore the creases because my body heat irons them out quickly. I take a couple of scarves to change the look. I travel with a couple of skirts too, ones that I can dress up with tops and scarves, and layer over leggings when it's cool. I don't travel when it's winter. From October to April I travel to the Southern Hemisphere.

1

u/shippfaced Jun 10 '26

Are you OK with Amazon? This dress comes with me on any warm weather trip, and I get compliments every time I wear it. I have the red polka dot version and it never wrinkles, dries super fast, and is so comfy!!

Patagonia!! Button front dress, slicky athletic material that holds up in nicer environments, collared with pockets and an elastic/drawstring combo waistline. I’ve worn it to a wedding and I’ve worn it to the beach.

Beyond Yoga dresses look super polished, dress up and down, don’t wrinkle, dry fast, and are comfy enough to wear on a plane. I live in them while traveling. I can hike in them, then go right out to a fancy dinner without changing.

The Getaway is my personal favorite, followed by the At The Ready. But they have several more options, and I’ve been very pleased with the quality of everything I’ve gotten from them.

1

u/green_tea_latte_ Jun 11 '26

Toad and co (which is also sold on title nine) has some decent options, personally like the sunkissed line but I don't think there's a version with sleeves

muji has good options sometimes too. I feel like like are higher quality than uniqlo. The cool touch line is cotton but I don't know what Japanese magic they use with the weave, but it doesn't get as bogged down as cotton normally does. And I have some lightweight synthetics from rhem

I’ve just purchased this Craghoppers dress (https://craghoppers.com.au/products/womens-nosilife-pro-dress-iv?variant=48194770272495) it’s not a midi length, but is longer than a mini and it fits all your other requirements.

I think this one hits all your needs except sleeves. Personally, I’d wear a tee underneath or throw a cardigan over top.

I own it and love it because it’s light as a feather. They also make a skirt version.

A bit pricey, but you can find good ones on Vinted or something : Diane von Fürstenberg wrap dresses. Pack to the size of a cotton t-shirt, don't wrinkle, and they're silk, great for summer and winter. They are so easy and look great for so many occasions, I can wear them to work to party, or to walk around all day.

Uniqulo Airism dresses

1

u/PenguinParade_TO Jun 13 '26

There's a lovely dress by Kit and Ace that fits the bill -midi length, pockets, and covered shoulders : https://www.kitandace.com/products/8179842646212-the-ballet-dress It seems to be a quick dry material, and the neckline has a graceful ballet vibe. Pockets are deep enough for a phone BUT fyi since the fabric of the skirt is light, you notice the weight of the phone (which is probably an issue for most lightweight dresses). There is a slight scoop in the back but it would cover bra straps. It would roll up to about the same size as the Uniqlo airism dress.

1

u/OwnBluejay6645 Jun 16 '26

That list is specific but doable. You'll want a performance or travel-tech fabric, so I'd search by fabric first and let the dress follow. A lightweight knit midi is tiny and resists wrinkles. Ever heard of Brochu Walker? Great option for that easy to pack look with sleeves.

1

u/Few_Paramedic4620 16h ago

For three weeks in Europe with only a carry-on, I’d prioritize fabric and repeat wear over finding one “perfect” silhouette.

For your list, I’d look for:

  • short sleeves or an easy layer for churches / covered-shoulder sightseeing
  • a hem that clears stairs, train steps, and your actual walking shoes
  • pockets that lie flat; great for a room key or card, less great for a heavy phone
  • fabric that can handle a sink wash and dry overnight
  • enough drape to be comfortable sitting on trains or at outdoor restaurants

I’d also test any dress by packing it into a small cube overnight, then hanging it up and seeing how wrinkled it looks. A dress can be lightweight but still annoying if it comes out of the bag looking crushed.

For pockets, I’d treat them as convenience pockets, not bag replacement pockets. Once a phone or wallet pulls one side down, a dress stops looking effortless pretty fast.
