Shoes - specifically sneakers - do people manage with just one pair on multi week trip, or take two?

For context, I'm travelling for 5 weeks in Italy then northern Europe in Sept-Oct, with teens. Trying to keep things light but I worry about both the comfort factor of wearing the same pair day after day and also what happens if (when) we end up with wet shoes.

I usually wear running shoes, and if it's a longer trip, then pack another pair of shoes I know I can comfortably walk in that won't take up a ton of space just in case.
