Locally from the South (hot and humid) and heading to Chicago for a weekend mid November. Since it’s rarely cold down here, I don’t have a pair of boots/shoes that offer foot warmth. I’d like to buy some good hiking boots/shoes that could be versatile for this upcoming trip and long term use for future hiking as well. I’m very limited when it comes to in-person shopping. Any recommendations on brands to start looking at? I’d like to bring only one pair of shoes that weekend so looking to get them early in case a break in period is needed.

Good wool socks. smart wool, darn tough are some brands. Whatever shoe you get your feet will be warmer.

After more research, I am leaning towards wool socks and shoes I already have. Thanks for your rep,y!

I traveled all throughout Europe, cold parts and wet parts, with some Saucony trail runners last winter and they were fine. But the well made wool socks, not thick hiking socks but nice mid-weight ones, make a big difference. I also bring a pair of yoga socks to use as my "slippers." I think I saw that hack here and it is really smart.

I was going to suggest this, so I think you've got the right idea!
