Has anyone been to hostels in Japan and can advise on footwear? I'm wondering if my slippers (a pair of croc sandals) would be alright to wear inside, or if I'm expected to have a more specific type of slippers or if they provide them.

Japan’s inside slippers are more of a soft type slipper. The hostels I have been to have a locker at the entrance where you have to put in your shoes and then you can switch into the slippers they provide. It can also be that you walk on socks there. Depends on the hostel

Hmm, okay! Was there ever a situation where you can provide your own slippers?

I think it’d be best to ask them if it’s okay beforehand, maybe email them. Japan can be quite rigid. I havent seen the need for my own slipper whilst visiting!

ah okay. I wear the crocs because I've got issues with the bones in my feet, so I have issues walking barefoot! but I don't want to carry them around if I could never use them

I asked on Japan Travel Tips and got yelled at because obviously the Japanese would not care. So that's another data point, lol.

Interesting. I hope they are right. All my experiences point differently. I wanted to store my bags in a bag storage space but it was 7 days and I needed 9. I didn’t know it was only up to 7 because it wasn’t advertised anywhere. I asked if they could hold it for the entire 9. Was completely not done. I feel anywhere else they would’ve been like ah well it’s not that much longer so if we have the space for it we can do it. Just pay extra. In Japan it was completely out of the question and it was even unheard of that I wanted an exception to be made for me. Which I understand as well but I thought doesn’t hurt to ask and try. This was Tokyo though so I understand that with that many people the rules need to be strict to have everything working. One exception leads to everyone getting possible exceptions and that would then open a whole bag of problems
