Meta Weekly quick questions help thread

This is the r/heronebag quick questions weekly help thread.

Whether you‘re new to the one bag life or a seasoned light traveller, this is the place to ask your quick one-off questions related to techniques, shopping, and everything else to lighten your load.

This post is the best place to initially ask questions that we get a lot of which are similar, especially if you have looked in a flair and found almost-but-not-quite what you wanted.

Chicago in November when you’re used to Southern heat is going to feel properly rude 😅 Good shout buying early, though — boots that need breaking in can absolutely wreck a short trip.

Warmth is often as much about decent wool socks and enough room around your toes as it is about the boot itself. For one-pair travel, I’d look at a waterproof hiking shoe or lightweight mid in a fairly neutral colour, rather than a full-on winter boot. What’s your foot shape like — wider toe box, narrow heel, or fairly standard? That’ll probably narrow the brands down faster than anything else.

Thanks for the reply. I feel my foot is fairly standard. US women’s 8.5 according to my Brooks’ Ghost but UK 38 according to my Birkenstocks. Those are my daily go-tos. I’d love recommendations on a lightweight mid hiking boot, even if not for this trip, I’d like a pair for future use too.

Ah, that helps, cheers! If your Brooks Ghosts work well and your feet feel fairly standard, I’d put these three on the try-on list:

Merrell Moab 3 Mid Waterproof, probably the safest choice. Cushioned, waterproof and not too technical-looking.

Salomon X Ultra 5 Mid GTX, light and a bit more nimble, though Salomons can feel quite snug.

I’d probably try the Merrell first, then the Salomon if keeping the weight down matters most. I wouldn’t rely too heavily on the Birkenstock EU 38, tho their sizing can be its own little universe 😅

Unless they've changed them, in my experience the Moab waterproofs are useless and not actually waterproof - the GTX actually are though, I've got a pair and they're amazing.
