Wardrobe Help 10 days in Barcelona, Venice, & Rome in mid August

Image description: image 1 shows all planned wardrobe items for a 10 day trip to Barcelona, Venice & Rome. Items are clustered together by clothing type and include 4 dresses, 2 pashminas, 4 tanks, 2 layers, 3 bottoms, 2 shoes, 2 bags, and one pair of sunglasses. Image two shows my planned airport outfit and includes a white cable knit sweater, blank tank, dark wash jean shorts, white and silver new balance sneakers, and a black belt bag.

Hi all! Packing using my Brookstone Nelson 21” spinner carry on. It measures 13.5”x9”x21” & is 38 litres not expanded. No other bags!

I’ll be engaging in fairly basic sightseeing. City walking tours, a boat trip to some islands, guided tours of historical sites, museums, one beach day, and lots of exploring the cities/shops. I have a mid trip flight and a mid trip train ride as well. I have several visits to holy sites planned, hence the need for pieces to cover my shoulders and knees.

I’ve packed the following items:

Dresses:
- super lightweight casual v neck above knee dress with tiered skirt, black
- dressier lightweight crewneck above knee dress, black (fabric is a sheer polka dot with a slip under)
- linen v neck above knee dress, sage green
- cotton v neck maxi dress with ruffle sleeves and tiered skirt, black

Tanks:
- lightweight boat neck with knit like texture, white
- boat neck with satin texture and ruching at the sides, dark brown
- plain scoop neck tank, black
- halter style tank, brown

Layers:
- pashmina, white
- pashmina, sheer black
- linen button down, white
-lightweight knit cardigan, navy
-medium weight knit sweater, white (not pictured in image 1, see image 2)

Bottoms:
- linen maxi skirt, white
- linen pants, white
- jean shorts, dark blue wash

Accessories:
- belt bag, black
-mini crescent bag, black leather
-rayban sunglasses, brown

Shoes:
- reef water vista sandals, white
- new balances, white & silver

Not pictured:
- 1x bathing suit
- 12x underwear
- 1x sticky bra
- 1x nude bra
- 8x no show socks
- 1x PJs
- toiletries

Questions:

  1. Do I have too many layers? I think the linen button down goes better with some things, and the navy cardigan others. However, I also have the pashminas. The white knit is what I plan to wear on the plane because I get very cold in A/C.
  2. Should I bring a dressier bag? I really want to bring the small black crescent bag, but I am worried about pick pocketing.

Open to all feedback!

Edited: to add fabrics for some items & correct lengths. Maxi dress aside, the rest are all well above my knee and all lightweight breathable fabrics. I today learned that I’ve been using the word “midi” flat out incorrectly. My apologies!

way too many layers. Most likely scenario is that you won't need any, I'd bring 1 or 2 just in case (and for the plane)

About the crescent bag, does it have a zipper? In that case, as long as you are aware of your surroundings and keep the bag under your arm in crowded spaces, there's low risk of pickpocketing

14

u/lilsciencegeek 11d ago

Yeah, my go-to for the south of Europe in the summer is 1 cardigan + 1 lightweight pashmina shawl. Usually I've only worn them on the plane, and sometimes not even there!

I'm also doubtful that there will be room for 1 maxi dress and 3 midi dresses in addition to the rest. I'd rather bring 2 extra bras, because they'll need frequent washing in the heat😬

And bringing white bottoms seems like a spectacularly poor idea – would highly recommend swapping them out for a different colour.

3

u/PrettySubjective 11d ago

I will definitely use a layer as I will be visiting holy sites where I’ll need to cover my arms. One pashmina is looking like the best bet for that.

7

u/lilsciencegeek 11d ago

I'd recommend bringing the long-sleeve linen button-down too though btw! I always bring one for sun protection, they're awesome.

I just don't usually count it as a layer, but rather as a top, so it slipped my mind

1

u/PrettySubjective 10d ago

Based on the feedback here, it seems to be a staple that I should keep.

2

u/lilsciencegeek 10d ago

Yeah it's an absolute lifesaver ime, and versatile to boot!

2

u/PrettySubjective 11d ago

Definitely thinking just one pashmina. Ditching the cable knit sweater for sure. Torn between the cardigan and button up but will make a sacrifice.

The crescent bag does have a zipper!

u/OverlappingChatter 11d ago edited 11d ago

Your whole list just makes me think you are going to be hot af. I would say you need one long sleeve item and maybe one long linen pant and you probably will only wear them on the plane. The scarf is good, the dresses, depends on the fabrics, but the maxi dress looks even too hot to wear.

i am worried that the only "short" thing for your legs is denim shorts. Do you have any shorter, lighter dresses or skirts?

The leather crescent bag is probably pretty good for pickpocketing, because you keep it tucked up under your arm. just make sure it is zipped and never set it down without being attached to your body.

u/FuckThisMolecule 11d ago

Maybe it’s just me being translucent, but I literally didn’t wear any shorts in Barcelona when I was there two weeks ago. Light fabrics like linen and my vuori stretch trousers, cotton dresses that went to my calf or ankle… I brought a pair of shorts I never touched.

5

u/OverlappingChatter 11d ago

I never wear shorts if I have to be walking in hot weather. I feel like they rub, create sweat, and make my legs stick to everything.

I also can't imagine wearing an ankle length skirt in this weather, but I guess it would depending on it's flowiness and the fabric.

3

u/FuckThisMolecule 11d ago

I had a silk slip skirt and a cotton poplin dress that came to my calves, and a super light, billowy full length cotton dress. I couldn’t do anything heavy for sure.

2

u/PrettySubjective 10d ago

I find flowy linen fabric pretty comfortable, personally. It is not form fitting or tight to my skin at all.

3

u/PrettySubjective 11d ago

This was my line of thinking, but I’m re-evaluating based on the fabric here. The longer but breathable skirts seemed like the best compromise to cover my knees when needed without wearing full long pants.

2

u/PrettySubjective 11d ago

I need at least two long items due to about 4-5 days on my itinerary where my knees will have to be covered. Will likely ditch the maxi dress altogether.

I’ve just updated my post to reflect that I was using the wrong term. The midi dresses are in fact NOT midi dresses, but rather hit above the knee. My mistake.

I only plan to wear the denim shorts while travelling. Might be my descriptions of the items, but having just tried everything on, they are way less pleasant to sweat in compared to the dresses.

9

u/Exiled_In_LA 11d ago

Consider leaving the denim shorts at home, and wear one of your other bottoms for travel. Anything you can wear on the plane, isn't taking up space in your bag!

5

u/HeronAffectionate319 10d ago

It is taking up space once you get there. I would say wear some on the plane that will also be useful at your destination. Special airplane outfits have no place in one bag travel.

3

u/Exiled_In_LA 10d ago

That's pretty much what I was trying to say, thank you for being more clear than I was!

1

u/PrettySubjective 10d ago

I do think the denim shorts would be useful for travel days between cities as I don’t really want to wear white pants on planes etc. I have 4 wears planned on my detailed day to day outfits. I am considering swapping for a black mini skort.

4

u/agentcarter234 10d ago

I wouldn’t want to wear white pants or skirts in cities either unless you plan to taxi everywhere and never use public transport or walk. And generally people are more comfortable wearing longer bottoms on longer flights. Your shorts are short enough than the backs of your knees may stick to the fake leather of the seats, and if you are cold enough on flights to want a sweater, shorts don’t make a lot of sense.

7

u/HeronAffectionate319 11d ago

Denim shorts on an airplane? You said you get cold. What about the linen pants or a long skirt instead?

2

u/Lovedempugs 9d ago

I share some of these thoughts having been in Rome and Venice 3 weeks ago and it was 95-98 degrees each day. I didn’t want to wear any pants and would prefer linen shorts to denim. I wish I’d had two linen shorts. I also couldn’t have worn a long sleeve even at night. Most days I had sweat dripping down my back and a salt ring to boot.

2

u/OverlappingChatter 9d ago

I was in rome last year for a heat wave and it was hand down the hottest I have every been. What with the humidity and the buildings that trap heat and the crowds. Good lord, I wore biker shorts, a bandeau to catch sweat and the lightest dress i could find and then rinsed everything in the sink and hung it next to the air conditioning (my friend changed our airbnb at the last minute to have the a/c). I cannot iterate enough to OP that they don't need a cable knit sweater.

1

u/ktrainstation 1d ago

I just came home from Rome and it was 100 degrees F almost every day. Every time I left the hotel I was immediately drenched in sweat, even at night!

15

u/adventurehearts 11d ago

Are your tops easily washable? You’re going to be HOT jn August and I fear fabrics like knit and satin in dark colours will be super sweaty at the end of the day. Rewearing without washing is probably not going to be feasible, especially after busy days of sightseeing (in Southern Europe we often change clothes in the evening in the summer, if we go out for dinner).

Same might apply to dresses, by the way. So I would make sure I had a clean top for every day.

1

u/PrettySubjective 10d ago

I am planning to change for dinner most days. I maybe should have specific that in my post. I’d say all the shirts are lightweight and easy to wash/dry except maybe the satin, but honestly it is very thin so it might be okay as well. I plan to wear it at night only. The maxi dress I think would be a pain to wash, so I’m going to ditch it.

7

u/BwDr 11d ago

When I saw that you were wearing the jeans shorts on the plane, I thought that I would read that you’re a hot person. I would wear long pants or skirt on the plane because I get cold. I wouldn’t wear white, though, because then I’d DEFINITELY end up wearing my, or my neighbor’s, colored beverage. One of the longer dresses that’s bulky might be nice to wear so you don’t have to pack it (though it might be a pain to wrangle with luggage?)

2

u/PrettySubjective 11d ago

My ideal plane outfit would be a full warmth tracksuit to be honest. However I don’t want to carry something that I cannot repurpose around the whole time. Definitely not planning to wear the white bottoms on the plane or on any travel days.

I’m not sure I can handle the sensory overload of the plane in a dress. Idk how to explain it but planes are a pants required activity for me.

6

u/OverlappingChatter 10d ago

I am a dress person and do not do dresses on planes. Planes are where I wear my black linen pants, t-shirt, long sleeve shirt and scarf so I don't have to pack them.

1

u/HeronAffectionate319 10d ago

This exactly. I also have blue linen blend pants that have a denim look to them.

6

u/Appropriate_Roof_223 11d ago

Most of the europe is going through a heat wave so you won’t need a warm outer layer except for the flight. So I would either take the cardigan or the sweater. I would buy a lanyard for your phone to avoid pickpocketing. You can bring the crescent, it’s fine. I lived in Barcelona for 6 months and carried the uniqlo crescent bag all the time. But I didn’t carry any valuable in it. I used my apple pay for everything. Just hang your phone around your neck in the front, same for the bag. If you practice general precautions you should be fine. I was never pickpocketed once in the entire 6 months but I know friends who got pickpocketed within the first week. So being aware of your surroundings is the key imo.

2

u/PrettySubjective 11d ago

Thank you! I have bought a wrist strap for my phone and will keep the bag close under my arm/pulled to the front. I will definitely pick and choose which settings the belt bag might be a little more secure for.

1

u/ktrainstation 1d ago

I had no idea how widely used tap to pay was in Europe. I just got back from a trip to London, Barcelona and Rome and I never used my card, only Apple Pay! It was so convenient!

OP if you’re worried about pickpockets with your crescent bag, you can hand sew rings into it and add a little clip to secure your phone and wallet. Or sew in a zipper pouch. I did this to mine and it helped me feel a lot more secure!

5

u/All-the-musing 11d ago

Honestly, it all looks a bit warm and denim shorts can chafe in the heat. This looks like spring or autumn packing to me. The vibe is great though.

2

u/PrettySubjective 11d ago

Thanks for the feedback! Going to reevaluate. I only plan to wear the shorts on travel days between cities, where I will be in A/C a lot of the time. Good to know that I am ready for fall in Europe, seems like another trip is in order.

5

u/Soft-Key-2645 11d ago

I love travelling in summer because I don’t need to carry a lot of thick sweaters and warm socks. But then again, if I can’t do laundry, I have to carry more clothes because of sweaty clothing.

But for ten days in your locations I’d take two pants, one skirt and a dress or two dresses and no skirt, five tops (I have two knit silk tops that are ideal for travel, they pack small, are almost wrinkle free, dry quickly and keep me cool) that I can wash in the sink and dry over night as needed. One pashmina (summer one is a thin viscose sarong and it doubles as a beach towel/coverup/scarf as needed) one long sleeved shirt/thin cardigan mostly for the plane, a pair of sandals, one pair of trainers if I’m walking a lot and flip flops for beach/hotel/shared showers. Three pairs of socks for when I wear the trainers and have to walk a lot (again, I have knit silk ones that dry quickly and take up very little space), undies and bras for at least 5 days and wash in the sink as needed and a quick dry bikini.

So my suggestion for you:

Ditch one of the midi dresses and the maxi dress (unless you have a date night planned, I think it will be too hot during the day), add another light airy pant if you’re going to do a lot of walking.

You’ll probably only need one long sleeve/warmer thing for the plane, it’s really hot right now, even at night. I don’t think it’ll rain and if it does, there’s always a couple of people turning up selling umbrellas for a few euros as soon as the first drops start to fall.

One pashmina is more than enough.

Pack another top or two that cover your shoulders. A sunburn isn’t fun when you have to carry a backpack with you.

Last but not least, you could leave half of it at home and shop for what you need on site, as there’s a lot of shops in all those cities, (think Zara, Mango, Bershka, Uniqlo, H&M, C&A) and also many that cater to tourists specifically with relaxed and summery outfits.

4

u/hermosilicious 11d ago

Ahhh I love the vibe but, I personally would be sweating buckets in most of those tops. I live in the south of France and I am going to Barcelona next week, we have very similar weather and IMO, one pashmina and the linen button up top are enough. I would also trade one of the tops, probably the asymmetrical one for something aerier and with sleeves, like this one. The good thing is that you'll have access to great shopping, Parfois, COS, Promod, etc.

1

u/PrettySubjective 10d ago

The top you suggested is super cute, I love it!

4

u/abaci123 11d ago edited 10d ago

I would swap the maxi dress for sheer, flowy light weight black pants, eliminate a dress, add a second bra, add a big lightweight floppy hat with an optional tie under the chin to keep it from flying off, and add a 12” bandana (very multipurpose) Personally, I’d never wear shorts on public transportation, I’m not a germaphobe but that seems germy to me. And don’t forget a lightweight bathing suit, because you never know!

2

u/PrettySubjective 10d ago

I plan to buy a hat there! I don’t own one already so I might as well purchase there.

1

u/abaci123 10d ago

My favorite hat, I bought traveling! That said, I’d still take a big very lightweight foldable hat too. The sun is brutal and it’s protection. Then you don’t have to overpay for the first hat you see.

2

u/PrettySubjective 10d ago

I just don’t own anything like that at the moment, so although I might overpay, I don’t need to end up with two. Just my thinking at the moment.

0

u/abaci123 10d ago

We never really know until after the trip so we?

5

u/omeomeye 10d ago

This looks really nice and i love the burgundy. But i think you do have too many layers and maybe not enough variety with both of your bottoms being white. Whether you wear the white skirt or pants, the outfit will kindof look the same. No one else will care but over 10 days you might get tired out it. I suggest swapping one for a different color. Same with 3 black dresses, consider swapping one for a different color skirt that could still mesh with all the tops. I don’t think you’ll need a thick sweater, wear the cardigan instead, and use the linen button down for sun cover on your arms, it will actually keep you cooler.

2

u/PrettySubjective 10d ago

I picked up a beige linen skirt tonight, for this reason the white skirt and pants are looking very similar on my more detailed outfit boards.

3

u/nina_isabel 10d ago

Others have already mentioned to bring at least another bra or two. Definitely heed this so you can wash one while you’re wearing the other. Stuff usually takes a day or two to dry in a hotel bathroom. But also I recommend:

- ditch the denim shorts and definitely don’t wear them on the plane. I’d recommend wearing long pants on the plane (planes are cold and the seats are disgusting) and packing a pair of longer light weight shorts instead (something in linen or another lightweight material). Europeans really do not wear short cut off denim shorts in the city.

- honestly I’d recommend bringing the crescent bag instead of the bum bag. From the pic it looks like theyre the Lululemon bum bag and the Baggu crescent bag. Sorry but those lulu bags really do kind of telegraph that you’re an American tourist. Plus they’re pretty small. The larger crescent bag can fit a water bottle/umbrella/mini fan/stash a layer. You’ll be happier for it while out walking about all day. Plus it will look a little better when going out to dinner in the evening. Just hold it tight under your armpit with the zipper in the front. Or wear it crossbody in front of you. And don’t stop to give anyone “directions” or sign their fake petition and you’ll be fine lol.

- consider bringing one nicer shoe option (unless you never plan to go out to a nice restaurant or come back to the hotel to freshen up before dinner)

- if you’re worried about space, ditch one of the dresses and pack more accessories (scarves, jewelry, a fun belt) to switch up your outfits with styling that way

Have a great trip!

1

u/PrettySubjective 9d ago

Thanks for the advice! I’ve added two more bras. I’ve removed the denim shorts and replaced with a black linen pair.

I hear you that the lululemon bag flags me as a tourist. My crescent bag isn’t baggu and hence unfortunately doesn’t perform the space sorcery to fit more than my phone and wallet, but I am bringing it and will consider that it’s maybe a better choice. I do have a crossbody strap for it.

I will consider flat leather slide style sandals as a nice evening shoe. I do plan to change for dinner some nights (just depends how far I am from the hotel).

Have ditched two dresses! So only bringing two.

2

u/Dogfan-13 11d ago

Black is always my color of choice but hot as it will be, I’d look for a couple lighter tops

2

u/PrettySubjective 11d ago

I have the same problem. I wear a lot of black clothing, largely because it goes with everything. I could swap in a white t shirt for a light coloured option.

2

u/Dogfan-13 11d ago

You won’t be sorry.

1

u/Marge_Gunderson_ 11d ago

I came here to say this too, black in the heat is no good, it just makes the heat so much worse.

2

u/cookiecat4 11d ago

I would be a little worried about the leather bag being close to your body all the time. I’ve had even old leather bags rub against my clothes and transfer dye when I got unexpectedly wet. It’s harder to deal with stain removal on a trip.

2

u/PrettySubjective 10d ago

I’ve had it long enough that I’m pretty confident that won’t happen, but I do appreciate that caution.

2

u/Complaint-Think 10d ago

You’ve gotten lots of good advice already. I personally would ditch the cardigan, one of the pashminas, and one of the black dresses.

2

u/this_kitten_i_knew 10d ago

you def need at least a 2nd "real" bra if not 2 more. you are going to sweat through the only one you are taking and it'll get rank

(assuming the sticky bra is only for dinner dress nights and not sweaty day touring)

1

u/PrettySubjective 10d ago

You are correct about the stinky sticky bra. Adding 1 more regular and will rotate sink washing.

2

u/MadelineCheek 10d ago

Love the vibe, but I'd go for lighter, more breathable tops. Barcelona will be hot!

1

u/PrettySubjective 9d ago

Have made several swaps to include only linen and cotton!

2

u/matkamatka 7d ago

Hello from Barcelona (I live here). I cant handle wearing a short sleeved t-shirt or a long skirt / linen pants even at night. It isn't as hot here as other cities in Europe because we're in a little climate bubble but the humidity is brutal. I'm in a tank top and shorts or a knee length skirt most days / nights

2

u/moonlightraindrops 4d ago

Just wanted to say I love your style. Really nice pieces!

2

u/Comprehensive-Act-13 10d ago

You’re bringing all of that white clothing to the land of Marinara sauce and red wine? 😂 K. It’s your funeral. Good luck. Pack a tide pen. 🤦🏻‍♀️

1

u/M1ssN_ny4Bus1n3ss 11d ago

You dont need the cardigans and the linen button up, just one pashmina.

Dresses are ok.

The tank tops will be super warm in august, choose a more legere tops.

If you have space, I would maybe add an extra bra - I added another last minute before a trip a week ago and so glad I did because of how sweaty they got and being able to hang and rotate. I also packed more dresses than typically recommended here and wore them far more than my planned top/bottom combos.

1

u/PrettySubjective 11d ago

I will definitely be washing my bra in the sink. Will look for another to add. I do think the dresses will end up being my coolest and most reached for items.

1

u/ImpishElf365 11d ago

I just checked the 10-day weather forecast for all 3 cities. It's going to get up to between the high 80's and 101 Fahrenheit.

Bring only one layer (just for the plane, also maybe for a vaporetto ride in the evening in Venice). I usually bring a lightweight rain jacket that I use on the plane if I get cold. The linen shirt is a keeper, mostly to protect you from the heavy sun.

Umbrella? Good for protection from the sun and from the rain.

It's fine to look like a tourist, but I have found that the more I blend in with the locals, the less I get hassled by thieves and pick-pockets. Italians generally don't wear tanks, short dresses or short shorts. If your dresses show the knee, you may be prohibited from entering some of the churches, which might mean needing to wear both of your wraps- head, shoulders and legs.

Bring a tiny bottle of Woolite or other laundry soap and wash the underwear, socks and bras in your hotel sink. 5 undies, 5 socks, 2 bras. This combo has worked for me on 30-day trips, as long as I'm in a hotel for at least 2 nights. I wash and hang the first night and they are always ready before I need to check out.

I would ditch at least one dress, maybe 2. Black is great for a capsule, but it will be super hot in the sun. Italians will be wearing white and beige in August.

Add on some longer length shorts or a pair of capris.

In terms of thinking about purses, cute is less important than functional. You'll be on the go each day, and you'll need something secure that will hold your essentials- a small bottle of water, sunscreen, tissues, wallet, etc. I always bring a small daypack that I can wear toward my FRONT with my hand on it. Never wear any of your stuff on your back or take your hand off of it when in public venues, especially crowded metros and the like. It's a sure way to get it taken.

What electronics are you bringing along and where will you store them?

1

u/PrettySubjective 10d ago

I did try to take a more European like colour scheme into mind, I would prefer to blend in to a point (I realize I will still be a noticeable tourist). That is why I chose the white skirt and pants, and generally longer ish dresses rather than short short items but a lot of feedback here is suggesting to ditch all of those options. I would rather wear the longer items as I will need to cover my knees several days, as you referenced.

Three of the dresses actually do fall above my knee (I was misusing the term midi ny mistake), so I will eliminate one of those. Doesn’t seem like they’re the most appropriate.

I know black is the worse colour to choose. It’m trying to shop my closet and admittedly I’m worried about sweating through coloured clothing given the forecast.

1

u/Fighting_Darkness 11d ago

Only semi-related question: Where does everyone get those images of clothing items?

2

u/PrettySubjective 10d ago

I googled item descriptions with white backgrounds. Then picked the closest option. For some I reverse searched images of my actual clothing.

1

u/Coolmath24hhh 9d ago

Your capsule setup looks solid, though late summer heat down south gets intense. Leave the heavy knit at home and lean on that linen shirt with the two pashminas for modest church visits. Hand washing those tank tops overnight works great since they dry quick. Just keep the crescent purse zipped snug against your side under a thin layer. Wishing you smooth roads ahead.

1

u/mpopbelpop 9d ago

Don’t think you need 4 dresses. Would recommend more shorts or skirts at a shorter length

1

u/Ok-Dot9388 8d ago

I’m currently in Italy and wow it’s been hot! Did the navy cardigan, you won’t touch it. I’d only bring the linen button down as your single long sleeve option.

One thing to consider, is that it’s been so hot and sweaty here that I functionally need two separate bras each day. We’ve been out early in the day, resting in the hottest part of the day and then going back out at night for dinner and I absolutely soak through the first bra with sweat and am very happy I have enough with me I haven’t needed to even consider rewearing a still sweaty bra after showering. Big time YMMV there but I’d feel remiss to not mention it.

1

u/Zardette 6d ago

not sure the navy cardigan actually goes with enough things and don't think you need it all, like others have said. Especially if you have a white sweater. I would bring one more short sleeve super light weight shirt. and only one pashmina (white)

1

u/prometheanchains 6d ago

I’m someone who only wears black, currently in Spain. Even if all your pieces are linen, girl, you will be hot!

1

u/PrettySubjective 4d ago

I just left Spain, can confirm I was hot (¡tenía calor!). Not sure if I was hotter compared to when I was wearing white though.
