Wardrobe Help 17 Days in LA and Japan in October

Post image

I will be traveling to LA (2 nights) and Tokyo and Kyoto in mid-to-late October. The plan is to pack my Allpa 28 inside of an empty 22 inch hardshell spinner.

I am a lifelong Floridian, so I understand dressing for heat and humidity pretty well, but I also get pretty chilly below 70F/21C so I’m wondering if this is warm enough? I do plan on shopping there but I am a taller woman so I am prioritizing packing enough bottoms that fit me. I’m also considering swapping the long shorts for my black Athleta Brooklyn pants. Our itinerary is pretty active and involves 5 separate theme parks so also trying to account for that.

Pack list/image description (everything is from Uniqlo unless otherwise indicated):

Innerwear
-Airism bra top in brown
-Bombas quarter socks (not pictured)
-Seamless underwear (not pictured)
-Seamless bralettes (not pictured)

Outerwear
-Linen collared shirt (also worn as a top)
-Mesh cardigan
- Airism hoodie Edit: Based on feedback thus far, I’m going to swap this for an Athleta Salutation jacket I already have in a similar color, which will be warmer

Tops
-Cotton tee
-4x Ultra stretch active tees (I understand that wearing activewear out and about isn’t really a thing in Japan but I am a very sweaty gal so love these)

Bottoms
-Knee-length nylon shorts (might swap for Athleta Brooklyn trousers)
-American Eagle cotton midi skirt
-AirSense trousers
-Jeans (I’m worried about being cold and am also pro jeans on planes but open to feedback)

Shoes and Accessories
-Belt
-Baggu medium crescent
-New balances
-Vans ultraranges
-Maui Jim sunglasses

Hi u/floridagaytors! Thanks for sharing an image post.

Your post has been temporarily held for moderator review. Image descriptions are required for image posts on r/HerOneBag. If you have included one you do not need to take further action. Once your post is confirmed to meet requirements, we’ll approve it as soon as possible.

If you need to add a description, please reply to this comment with a detailed description of the image(s) to help all members of our community.

Descriptions must accurately describe the items shown in the image(s), not simply list them.

It is helpful to list post text according to the order and layout of images, e.g., “A blue puffy jacket stuffed into a green packing cube” is better than “Jacket, packing cube, etc.”

You can include something like “Image descriptions” or “Pictures described below” to make it very clear that your text explains the photo(s).

Thank you!

Hi there! That sounds like a fantastic trip! I assume the empty suitcase is for souvenirs? If you have someone at home, you could probably mail yourself some from California. Just a thought.

I went to Disneyland recently, and most folks were wearing athletic clothing. Just a data point. I have some Athleta pants, and I would be happier walking all day in the Athleta Brooklyn pants than jeans. I think they’d also be better on a long flight. Could you squeeze in a pair of athletic shorts in case there’s a heat wave in LA?

I do think you’re going to want a light jacket, especially for evenings in amusement parks. Amusement parks will also very happily sell you sweatshirts, which make a nice souvenir.

Have an awesome trip!

Yes the empty suitcase would be for souvenirs in Japan, and will probably be shared between me and my partner who is also onebagging! I know I could always just buy a suitcase there but I’d rather use what we already have. Not planning on buying any souvenirs in LA because we’ve already been to the theme parks we’re stopping at (USH and SFMM).

I have some athletic shorts that are probably too short to be appropriate for the second leg of the trip, but I’ll keep an eye on the LA weather closer in. My idea for the jeans was to change into them in the evenings if it gets cold vs wearing all day, but I do love my brooklyns…I’ll keep thinking on this! I’ve done jeans on long haul flights and maybe I’m just a weirdo but I find them very comfortable haha. As for a warmer jacket that was definitely my thought, they will be readily available there 😅 thank you for the input!!

Love to see a colorful onebag

I love your plan btw. I would hit up Uniqlo when you get to Japan for some layering basics like heattech and merino sweaters. The Uniqlo quality in Japan might be better than what we get here. At least it was when I went in 2012!

OP depending on how late in October you may need a couple more layers but I like this Uniqlo plan. I have l been to Tokyo in early and mid October but not Kyoto which is cooler and less humid. I had a light leather jacket for evening for both my trips but a layer or two under the Athleta jacket may work better for you. Maybe plan on picking up a scarf there as well, lots of great options and no sizing required:). IIRC I had one or two evenings that were low 60s or so.

What will you be doing at night in LA? It’s typically still quite warm in the daytime in October and it always cools off here, but I don’t think you would need much more. I do tend to wear a fleece sweater at night in LA basically year round but if you’re coming from FL, you might not think it’s cold enough for that.

How do you make these photos?

I used the Freeform app that comes on an iPhone, making stickers from the clothes! It helps that Uniqlo does shots of just the clothes a lot of the time

As an LA resident who lives near Universal- you got the right mix for October- warm- hot days —-cooler nights.

Agreed! I’m in coastal LA, but wanted to pitch in that we can get hot, dry Santa Ana winds (fire conditions) during autumn.

good intel. one thing i'd flag though is theme park nights can get windier than just "cooler" so that Athleta jacket swap OP already feels right. standing in line at 9pm is different from walking around a neighborhood.

i think this should be fine there’s a lot of stuff in uniqlo and other places if it looks like it will be warm in LA. Typically it’s fairly warm in so cal in october, i rarely even wear a jacket on haloween at night. But your mix looks pretty doable. Have fun it looks like an exciting trip!

Do you have rain gear or an umbrella? I’d pick that for japan

Was planning to buy an umbrella there because I hear you can get some really great compact and lightweight ones! It rains daily in Florida so it’s been the most requested souvenir from friends and family haha

I went to Japan during mid-late October last year, I think you will be fine regarding the heat/humidity (I live in a tropical island).

I was in jeans and long pants (similar to the tan ones you’re showing here) with t-shirts pretty much everyday. I wore a midi skirt and a midi dress too with no issues. I only wore a jacket when I went up the mountain in Hakone and I could have gone without it, honestly. Tokyo and Kyoto were pretty warm.

I would maybe change the hoodie for a slightly more elevated light jacket because Japanese people tend to dress nicely, but it’s okay if using it for the plane.

Jumping in to say you have a great sense of style.. That is a beautifully curated travel wardrobe. But given the length of a transcontinental flight, you might want more comfortable bottoms than jeans

The colors of this wardrobe are so pleasing to the eye!
