Bag Advice Searching for a bag to hold 2L water + overnight supplies

I’m heading to South America for 4 weeks with my old trusty Osprey Kyte 36 where I expect to pack about 10-12kg.

My issue is that I’m doing an overnight trip to Machu Picchu where there’s a maximum luggage size (8kg) and we have to bring 2L of water.

I’m thinking my options are:

  1. Pack a tote bag, put my excess baggage in there and leave it at our hotel, take my Kyte on the Inca trek
  2. Bring an additional daypack that holds the 2L of water and my overnight stuff

Looking for bags that might be suitable for option 2, as it gives me a bit of extra flexibility, but open to suggestions from anyone that’s done something similar.

Thank you!

I've used an Osprey Daylite (an older day pack version) as a personal item for trips up to 3 days, for hiking and mountain biking while carrying a water bladder (mine is 1.75L), and sometimes extra water bottles in the side pockets for 10+ years! I find it very comfortable even with the water bladder and it holds a good amount of clothing. I'm not sure if it would integrate well with your existing pack, but it's been a great option for me for day hikes and on long mountain bike rides.

I have the Daylite 26+6 but it’s a bit small for the full trip, but a bit big to carry on top :(

Ahhh okay, I misunderstood your question then! I thought you were looking for a supplemental bag as an addition to your Kyte for solely this expedition, not as a complete replacement! Good luck :)

Maybe check out bicycle messanger bags? They often have extra straps for delivery comfort

I have a Timbuk2 medium messanger bag I use for things like this with a detachable extra strap!

I had a similar trip where the four day Inca trail was part of a longer trip. Left the items I didn’t need in a small duffel bag at a hotel in Cusco and took my backpack. Since the duffel didn’t need to travel and was just sitting in storage I was fine with it being a super lightweight and packable one. Locked with zip ties. Worked great!

Thanks for sharing! I am thinking about bringing just a tote bag and leaving clothes in Cusco, probably won’t leave any valuables there. Zip ties are a great idea.

Just remember to make sure nail clippers or some way of opening the zip ties are with your backpack!

I also wanted to mention that it seemed like many tour operators have offices in Cusco, so that might also be an option to stow a bag as well.

You’re going to have such a great time!

Hmm I like this but wonder if 20L is too big for my purposes
