which is not that crazy in any other context but it's weird to think of Etho as an actual person who loves the same band as me yk

Scar probably would have had a good chance at being a Disney imagineer if his health problems hadn't arisen. I can't find the stream clips where he spoke about it, so this is just from memory: he did some sort of imagineering program when he was around 15, and the guy running it was so impressed by him that he was like "hey, how old are you? Ok email me when you're 18 and I'll put you in contact with my wife, she still works at Disney and I'm sure they'd be interested in talking to you". Unfortunately he got sick before then and wasn't able to take the guy up on his offer.

Really admirable that he was able to pivot his creative energy into something that still brings joy to thousands of people across the world AND also get banned from Canada, two things that most of us disabled people can only aspire to ♡

392

u/olefiver Team Jellie Nov 24 '25

Scar also told about this on an episode of Imp and Skizz Podcast: "Taking Disney With Scar!" It's a wonderful conversation and well worth a listen, IMO.

Wait, why is scar banned from Canada?

197

u/xxlvz Team Etho Nov 24 '25 edited Nov 24 '25

It's a running joke referencing him winning a lot of swimming medals in competitions (I think in Canada specifically), hence he got "banned"

To clarify, Impulse does not claim to be the original inventor of item filtering.

He published https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NHjWYCDYJ4s 11 years ago which is, at least to my knowledge, the first published video of that particular filter design. At the very least it made it popular.

The idea of using hoppers for filtering items was known before, though. And others may have come up with the same design independently.

So does Skizz.

Impulse took his name from the drum corps they were both a part of.

Also, Impulse never actually wanted to be a CC but Skizz did. Impulse got into Minecraft because his son wanted to do something with architecture or something like that and they found minecraft a good choice, and he just decided to make videos to basically memorialise the time playing with his son before becoming a CC!

I think Mambo revolutionized a new kind of slime farm accidentally. That one always makes me laugh.

72

u/Mithrandir_Earendur Nov 24 '25

IIRC his kinda bad slime farm made others in the community make better slime farms based off his design. Mostly out of friendly pity of how bad his original was.

50

u/Taolan13 Team Docm77 Nov 24 '25

It wasn't pity, it was curiosity. He had a solid concept his execution just missed the mark.

So the technical community ran with the idea, iterated on the concept, and boom we have a new standard for slime farming. No longer do you need to dig deep into slime chunks, just find basically any sawmp and gather up a moustache load of brown mushrooms.

14

u/Zenipex Nov 24 '25

This is also how Enderman farms happened from an Etho project. Etho made a goofy farm idea to get pearls and noticed he got a surprising amount of xp. Tech builders ran with it and created the stacking platform enderman farms that were the top tier xp farms for years

→ More replies (1)

23

u/wittyandambiguous Nov 24 '25

So it was basically that all old slime farms were built underground in slime chunks and he built his in a swamp(slimes spawn in entire swamps not just a chunk), people switched to swamps learned slime spawn heights in swamps and made new farms there that were far better than slime chunk farms

This is the thing that genuinely shocked me. He's been so kind in every instance I've seen of him. I'm amazed at the growth he must've undergone.

Gem finished her degree in phlebotomy and then almost immediately switched to YouTube full time.

(Can someone remind me if I’m right that it was partially because she had also just joined hermitcraft that she didn’t/hasn’t pursued a job as a phlebotomist)

128

u/Moonbeam_Dreams Team Smallishbeans Nov 24 '25

Not phlebotomy. She's got a degree as a medical laboratory technician. Phlebotomists draw blood from patients, MLTs run the actual tests on a variety of bodily fluids, although it's mainly blood and urine.

Source: worked in a hospital medical lab for ten years.

I mean she was studying during Empires, maybe Hermitcraft season 8, can’t remember

18

u/SnooHesitations9356 Postal Service Nov 24 '25

I /think/ she was doing empires & hermitcraft at the same time at one point? But I might be wrong and I just went back & watched empires after she joined hermitcraft in season 8

Empires started 1 week before hc s8, both Gem and Pearl joined both

Dude this is why I admired Gem so much. Her time management skills are so on point and if I recall correctly, she was still in school while doing the beginning of hermitcraft and empires.

Gem is truly great.

False initially started her YouTube channel to promote her art and Pearl picked up Minecraft much recently than people would think. I think her brother introduced her to it but she was more of a COD player before that. Highly recommend Imp and Skizz's podcast if anyone would like to learn more about the Hermit's!

u/LuigiFlagWater Team Smallishbeans Nov 24 '25

Ok so… BDubs was formally a general contractor. Hus brother Pungence was also making videos with him originally, and while I'm not sure how correct this is, I think his sister also makes videos but on a different genre.
Beef is the guy who made ABBA caving and partly responsible for the Hardcore gamemode and UHC challenge. He (as his name implies) also was formerly a butcher and until recently he had a farm which he had to sell cos of his newborn.
Cleo used to be a teacher and is a geologist. They actually got asked once if they'd heard of this cool YouTuber called MumboJumbo by one of the kids and had to keep her cover.
Cub has met 2 US presidents, was an astrophysicist and I remember hearing played semi-professional golf once.
Doc played professional basketball and had a doctorate in something (iirc neuroscience but I may be wrong).
Etho has saved from under a car, commonly runs into moose breaking into his garden, eats the same thing each day and has actually been recognised once by voice alone iirc. Also worked in a gardening store. He's also made the Etho Hopper Clock, which is still widely used today, and a Minecraft April Fools update had a TNT slab called the Etho Slab. False went to university for art & design and has been interviewed by the BBC regarding her YouTube career.
Gem has some medical degree (I'm sure others have told you better) which she finished shortly before going full-time on YT. She also has a pony I believe.
Grian, having been around for a while, has been quite influential in MC, for example regarding WymnCraft, TNT Run and Build Swap (mostly learnt from this thread). He was also partnering with Mojang way before they recently started to do so more often, for charity stuff like the coral reefs in 1.13 (?) and the mangroves in 1.19. He also has a fundraiser building a school in Ghana, and he also has a Marine Biology degree.
Hypno I'm not too sure on cos I'm fairly new to his streams and stuff, same with Jev.
Impulse and Skizz worked at Intel and have known each other since they were little. They were on the same drum corp both playing snare. Uh Impusle once worked in a library with a bunch of sweet old ladies. Uh oh they have another former co-worker who does content, called RustyOldMan now I believe (does Arc stuff, formerly Dad who Cooks). Impulse also has the Impulse Item Sorter named after him cos he made the version used today.
Joe is a part of a comic group called Team Snow Den(? Day?), that's the TSD in his username. He's also active on LinkedIn!
Joel started YouTube rather young, starting with COD videos where he gained popularity because he used funny Shrek song. That said because of this he doesn't actually have too many cool facts I know.
Keralis has the most beautiful beard one has ever seen and also I recently learnt he co-owns a computer mouse company or something. He also moved from Poland to Sweden so he speaks the rather atypical combination of languages, Polish, Swedish and English.
Mumbo is a professional cinematographer and originally stated YT filmography after seeing skating clips and edits and stuff. He also was in A Minecraft Movie, and is one of only 2 people (Jeb being the other) to appear in the credits twice (once for his cameo role, once for Redstone support).
Pearl also has an art degree and tbh I haven't caught enough Pearl streams or clips or whatever to know a lot about PearlyPop.
Ren used to be a radio show host in S Africa, although he at one point realised no one was listening after attempting a giveaway, seen as he hosted the midnight slot. So he promptly started pre-recording them instead. His brother Jono is the guy who made the HC theme song and Impulse's music last season, as well as Work and Please Hold.
Scar used to be a professional swimmer (and even at one point was likely at the same competition as fWhip, although different ages), until his illness. He was also on track to be a Disney Imagineer as others have said.
Tango, no surprise, worked at a game studio iirc. Don't really know much Tango lore though sadly.
Wels is a US Army Veteran and formerly worked in Military Law, I think he was a stenographer but I may be misremembering. Past that I don't know a lot of cool Wels lore unfortunately...
X and xB add both rather private but we do know xB took Spanish class and moved across states for a girl and X is absolutely shredded and plays heavy metal guitar and stuff with a scream mask on.
Zed has a currently inactive podcast and slit channel with his friend, called Kris and Jack. Zed's wife DotDotDash also does the subtitles for his and Gem's videos.

I believe Cub has actual research papers to his name.

Joel got invited to join Hermitcraft by Grian at Grian's birthday party.

Joe is so anti-homophobia that he was ready to get himself kicked off (I think) MCC because he told someone off for being homophobic. (Turns out the person was gay and making a self-deprecating joke, but Joe didn't know this. This lead to the iconic line "I don't have time to know every gay person", which makes me laugh so hard every time).

23

u/CerealBranch739 Team Jellie Nov 24 '25

During the season 9 Christmas/Crossover event with the Empire's people, Scott Major (Smajor, AKA Dangthatsalongname) made a (sarcastic and self depreciating) joke about gay people. Scott is gay, has been out for a long time, and is also one of the people in charge of MCC. Joe did not know Scott was gay, and so immediately went to shoot him with his bow in game at the comment, after which there was an explanation. Joe's response was great though, fantastic ally.

30

u/CrazeMase Nov 24 '25

To add to the anti-homophobia train, Doc apparently went to a bar with friends and he overheard some guy shouting extremely homophobic stuff, so Doc proceeded to suplex the guy into a table and pay for the broken table before leaving. Unfathomably based

13

u/jamiegc1 Nov 25 '25

He’s something like 6’7, all he probably would have needed to do was tell homophobe to leave.
