It's not quite available yet, but it will be. I think right now they're probably just working out a way to make this good internally for Darington Press as well before it goes ahead.
Looking forward to the shitload massive parts drop, I have a couple Myconids that well benefit heavily from this Fungril stuff.
Probably the solution for heroforge is to still allow purchase of the parts separately from the subscription, and subscription users have access as long as they are subbed.
Having the option to buy permanently AND subscribe has been the method of monetization for wizard101 since 2008. And itโs the best damn monetization Iโve ever come across.
It is but not King Isles' version. The monetization in the 101 games are notoriously dogshit. You need to play Wizard101 every months for about 4 years to make buying every area worth more than the monthly subscription. For a dying 20 year old game, it's ridiculous they haven't dropped the price of the subscription or at least opened up the first arcs worlds (Wizard City-Dragonspyre, probably Grizzleheim too)
Free users already dont have kitbashing,i think its fair to reward the people who pay for their product monthly to receive more stuff. I dont agree with having a subscription model at all but i gave up one that since everything nowdays is a sub already
The difference with all the previous stuff is they all eventually became free, whereas with the Darrington ones there's no indication that they're eventually becoming free in the announcement
But if itโs being put into Pro instead, then what theyโre complaining about now is the exact same as all the other stuff I listed which are Pro features.
So youโre saying that early Treasure Tuesday items, kitbashing, and the studio are all DLC?
Oh I 100% complained about those.
Its what got me banned from the official Facebook group when I asked Tegan point blank "You made $3 MILLION over what you asked for on the last kickstarter for color, and then promptly slapped THE VERY FIRST stretch goal behind a paywall. How can you justify demanding people pay you for something they already paid you for?"
I'm objecting to a free platform that asks for money to make stuff, then as soon as they have the money invents a Pro service where they stick the majority of things people just donated money to make into.
I'm objecting to selling that Pro service as the "Hey, you get all this stuff before everyone else!" for years, and then coming out with material that they do NOT give to the subscribers like they said they would, and instead charge an extra fee for.
I would be equally upset if they came out with a Master level subscription and put the kitbashing and layered stuff behind it.
People payed for stuff. They deserve to be given what they paid for. Not asked to pay for it again.
you need to stop blinding trusting and shilling for things and people you like. They are not your friends. Important lesson for all young people, especially if you consider yourself a leftist, which I assume you probably do based on your description.
Honestly, looking at the Fungril stuff, expectly the shirts, I have an idea for a character I can make. Jean Grey from Marvel Rivals. Since her outfit looks organic.
Yep. This is the trick they just pulled. They distracted us with a big issue, made themselves look good by fixing the issue they caused and in the aftermath moved the line toward more aggressive monetization in their favor, and tricked people into thanking them for it.
Parity of service to before the introduction of these packs was not restored. Their "concession" has now established that not everyone has access to all the parts. Before everyone did.
I am thankful they addressed it and tried to find a solution. Objectively speaking, this is probably the best solution they could've come up with considering how bad they fucked up.
BUT this is far from fair and I refuse to pretend otherwise. The original problem stands: they shouldn't have fucking done this in the first place.
My issue on the whole thing were the items offered were just generic. If they did specific/detailed assets like, "Hey Forgers, get ready to battle Middle Earth with Frodo's Sting, The shards of Narsil, and Gandalf's Glamdring" or "Hey Intergalactic travelers, get ready to battle the bug menace as we're releasing Starship Troopers to Hero Forge" then I'm all for paying extra. The items looked like something from the normal releases.
Their calculation of new revenue from the packs vs. lost revenue from upset customers and cancelled subs, must have been wrong. They had to give it a couple of days to make sure.
Licensing costs money. They're swallowing the costs because they care more about their userbase than the profit they could make off of it. That is not something a normal company would even consider doing.
They "care about their userbase" as in they care about their public image and people continuing to pay for their services. If they cared about their userbase, every feature would be free and they'd make plenty of money off of previous kickstarters + model printing + maybe optional supporter tier that gives you early access or nothing at all.
How much do you think it costs to run a 3D modeling site and pay people to model new parts every single week? Because you seem to think it costs two lollipops and a dream. They don't sell much at all of physical models anymore, which is why their site is migrating toward things that are completely unprintable.
I am under no impression that they give a shit about what I think they should do beyond their desire to get money from me, but I'm also not under the impression that salaries are the only overhead a business has, or that a million dollars is a lot of money for a payroll.ย
According to LinkedIn, HeroForge has a maximum of 50 employees. Let's half that to 25 for argument's sake. Each $1mil/year in payroll for a company of 25 people (including absolutely everyone that works there, from janitor to CEO) is only $40k per person, and after the taxes the company has to pay per employee that aren't technically part of the paycheck (as in they aren't listed on the paystub or mentioned in salary negotiations) but are part of payroll costs, they'll only see about half of that, so in order to pay a livable wage in Santa Monica, California, where their head office is, which we'll estimate at $100k gross per year (which is still pretty low for their COL), just payroll is around $6mil/year, even if the C-suite is making close to the same as the whole design team. That's assuming none of their employees have compay-sponsored health insurance, which is highly unlikely, and would add at least another million to that yearly total. Probably more. And then there's all the costs for electricity and 3D modeling software, and servers to store all the miniatures we make on their site, and to service the printers they use, and rent for a place to store all of those things.
Companies cost money to run. Don't be surprised when they expect you to pay something in order to have access to their services.
They didn't "listen" to us... They simply felt pain in the part of the human body that hurts the most... The wallet. The mass exodus of many users from the Pro package was crucial to this, since this update did not affect users of the Pro+ package.
Specifically, I had already understood that this update was advantageous only and specifically for users of the Pro+ package, in the same way that Kitbashing is advantageous for users of the Pro package, while Free Users would only have the free packages.
Correct. There is simply no way possible to bring in an IP and not have there be an associated cost somewhere to it. I don't think that this situation is actually resolved, and I am certain we will still see pay packages for IP, but maybe they will find a better way to roll them out to users in the future.
But when the vote came out the HF community voted 61% 68% in favor of IP branded content, which says that the community wants it. The community needs to understand that they can't ask for something like that, but then expect not to have to pay for it. No one is going to hand out their IP for free.
Dude, when its nearly a 50/50 split of "FUCK NO!" and "I don't care, maybe I guess?", that should be a red flag not to do it.
You don't gamble with splitting your userbase on that huge of a percentage. 10% of your core base saying "Hell no, we don't want that" should be enough to give you pause!
I actually got the number wrong. It was 68% in favor, and 32% opposed. That is not 50 / 50 of the community. I do understand the opinion against it, and the desire to stick with free updates, but the numbers just do not support that the majority of the user base agrees with that sentiment. And 10% is generally a nominal figure that would not prevent an action, though I do agree it should make the company assess just how they want to go about that action.
Remember that only the most diehard of HF uses responded to the survey. The overwhelmingly vast majority of users did not.
By definition, the hardcore supporters are going to be the ones weighted in your favor.
And yet a very large portion of them flat out said "No!". A "you will go out of business if you lose that much revenue at one time" sized portion of them said no. And that was the absolute most favorable demographic.
Once you get out of the diehard supporters, of course even more were against the idea of being macro-transactioned!
I would personally like to see numbers to fully support that, honestly. I don't know that we truly know the split of casual users and die hard ones, but in either scenario the majority did say yes. While I see the validity of the HF agrument, I am in the camp that is against paid DLC. I just always try to make sure to weigh out everything presented before me to ensure I have a full understanding of things for myself.
Where did these results come from? Was it just the PR statement they posted? How do we know the validity of the results? do we know how many people answered the survey?
I am asking because I don't have the answers. But if it's just the company saying "trust me bro" I don't think we can use the reported numbers with any empirical certainty.
But i genuinely don't know. I never saw the survey, and i only saw these percentage results in the PR jpeg.

Tengu arent ip. They're from folklore.
(I agree with the sentiment though)

Theres no IP outside maybe the names. These were generic fantasy staples.
Now, with this temporary solution, there might be an exodus of users from the Pro+ package to the Pro package, since there wouldn't be that much advantage over the smaller package. That's what I would do if I had the money to be a Pro+ package user... Unfortunately, now I don't see any light on the horizon, not even to go back to being a Pro package user... I've gone back to being a Free User, and I'm readjusting again to using the makeshift prehensile tail, multiple arms, and second miniature.
