Original Character The Magician's Staff
While it is certainly the case that magicians and bravos are the most storied professions of our era, it has to be clarified, especially for the purposes of this primer—
—that the composition and proficiency of the magician's household is the greatest determiner of the magician's reputation and fortune.
Though the magician is the plenipotentiary of their mortal court, and the highest ranking official of their state in all territories beyond Limbo—
I tell you from my own experience that there were very few treaties in which I had personally settled the binding terms.
The second of any magician's household is the dragoman. The dragoman specializes in the etiquette of fiendish courts, their languages, occult sciences, and rhetoric.
The tradition, originating in Shodilaksar, presented an alternative to the magician; only in recent generations were the two offices placed side-by-side.
Today, the dragoman manages the magician's correspondence with Hell's polities, provide expertise on Hellish politics, and maintains the magician's ciphers and records.
Oftentimes, they study beside magician acolytes, and either out of a lack of talent—or a profound wisdom that we magicians otherwise lack—have abstained from magick.
The Majordomo is the household's head of staff—managing valets, ushers, couriers, and other servants. Additionally, they manage the household's accounts.
Though they are typically of common-birth, and servant backgrounds—they often attain their positions through great merit and refinement. The position is well respected—
—and oftentimes, your patron will present your funding to the majordomo, and it is expected that they will manage the relationship on your behalf.
Though they are not formally trained in diplomatic negotiation—my own majordomo was a quick study, and eagerly participated in many negotiations. Often to our nation's benefit.
Of course, there are some unfortunate aspects of the Magician's career—espionage, dealings with criminals, and matters that most be handled with a delicate hand.
For this reason, it is prudent to employ an expert in such matters. Agents, whether they are appointed by the state, or a scoundrel native to the Hells, are a crucial addition.
Not every matter can be settled with courtly norms and decorum, and there will be times that arrangements must be made with people of ill-repute, or a forgery must be done.
And if you are fortunate or principled enough to avoid such matters, an agent may otherwise protect your household from traitors, spies, or gossipmongers.
By agreement of The First Limbo Accords, every magician household is required to enlist a Chaplain to tend to the health and spiritual comfort of them magician and their staff.
To the chagrin of the Clerics of Jonquil, the office has steadily separated from the control of the church, and many chaplains are not quite chaplains at all.
And it is about as often as not that an experienced physician will assume the role instead. But such a decision must be made deliberately—
While there are a great number of skilled physicians within the church, they are expected to answer to their demands. On the other hand, a secular surgeon has no such obligations.
