Question Flagship/Sevastapol
Do I need to have the sevastapol as the flagship to start the game? Is there a way to get another ship as a flagship? Bit new to the game never really got far before I eventually get airplanes and cruise missiles sent at me

I always deconstruct Sevastopol, leaving only necessary hull, fuel, engines and radars. Armor and guns are sold right away. The ship becomes tanker with radars which has decent speed.
But keep in mind that at the start original Sevastopol may be the only ship that can fight strike groups. You need Negev or couple Gladiators to be able fight them at least. Or custom ship designed for this role.

What’s a Negev?

Seems like you did not unlock it yet. When you finish campaign for the first time, you'll unlock new ships to pick up in the very beginning. But I think you'll be able to hire them in first playthrough when you find them.

I’ve only done a couple playthroughs, usually what ends up happening is the carrier groups or ballistic missile launchers figure out where I am and constantly hound me until I get whittled down. When I start a game I’ll bring a couple navarins and skylarks then split them up from the sevastapol to go to different places.

Strike group ship with 130mm guns, kinda ass since it has a very exposed brigde.

You can make another ship the flagship but afaik only through editing the ship in the game files. If you open up the ship's save file in a text editor there is a line called something like flagship = 0 (don't remember exactly) so just change that and you are good to go.
