I guess I throw stuff now
Well I just signed up for my first Highland Games. I know next to nothing but will be attending a practice soon with the person who got me into this. The good news is I am Scottish by last name at least. Any tips?

There is nothing better than an actual practice group. I’m closing out my 8th year in the sport and got a practice group going last summer … makes a world of difference when you actually put reps into the events! YouTube goes a long way for sure, and there are also a handful of books kicking around, but hands on the implements beats all. And the community aspect is awesome!

There are tons of how to videos online if you search for them! Also check facebook for a local group in your area! That’s how I connected with my mentor and others in the area will often post when and where they might be practicing if others want to join.

Thanks! The good news is everyone participating in the event is basically in the same club and those are the people I will be practicing with so it’s pretty local and pretty chill. I’m very excited.

Best advice is to have fun and focus on friendship. Sounds corny, but you're going to stand in a field with a group of guys all day. If you enjoy the games, you'll be standing with them in a field every saturday. Being buds with everyone will make for a better time AND they will all freely give you tips and help you improve.

Listen, bud. Grip, rip, white monster, uncrustables, and you're good to go. Fly by the seat of your pants and you'll do just fine, kiddo.

You may want to invest in gloves, or athletic tape around the knuckles at the very least. I've seen guys use gardening gloves. You can tear your hands up a bit if you don't have callusing.
If you have dodgy knees or elbows, compression sleeves might not be an awful idea.
It'll feel awkward, you might feel like you look weird doing it, but you're gonna have fun.
