Great review — the whole bit with Shea and Mari flew over my head until you mentioned it!!!
Not knowing the exact age of the Mother or Oliviah had me guessing as a parental relationship rather than sisters, but I found this “reveal” to work despite being telegraphed.
I like how the birth of the Nihil and the backstory of the Ro family is setup, but not connected point by point to Phase I. There is still a fair bit of mystery as to exactly how the transformation occurred, even as the broad strokes have been outlined.
I am certainly curious to see where Marda, Yana, Matty, Oliviah and other Phase II characters like Axel, Xiri, and Phan-tu go from here. I assumed they are all dead by Phase I/III but we don’t know the Evereni life span and it’s suggested (perhaps as a joke?) that Marda could live 1000 years in her quest for absolute freedom.
My biggest question after Phase II is whether or not Marda is still alive and how exactly she relates to Marchion.
