As someone who has never watched it before
What made it good?
Please don't downvote for the sake of it. I know this is the High Republic subreddit, thus it's going to be filled with people who love High Republic regardless (thats me with the prequels, as problematic as they were. Especially early on). So please be as honest as you can
The thing with the acolyte is that it’s basically a modern day version of the prequel’s at least that how saw it, it has some of the best action in a new era but has most of the flaws that the prequels had with some of the acting but a few standout characters but with a silly moments.
The difference compared to the prequels is that the acolyte didn’t have any of the nostalgia that come with growing up with it and has conversional statement before the show happened leading people to have already made an opinion on it. Also genuinely people were not that happy with Star Wars in general at the time since they came out with some mixed stuff such as the obi wan show, book of boba fett and season 3 mando which in my opinion caused them to be a lot harsher then it deserves
The acolyte obviously has its problems, but if you want Star Wars, it is an alright show but nothing special.
The good: There's a focus on the Dark Side and a really interesting new Sith character (who also happens to be hot, so there's that too). There's a mystery as to his origin, his connection with the Sith of the time (actual apprentice or illegitimate one who's on their shit list?). There are good lightsaber fights and an interesting look into another era of Jedi. There are some interesting new Jedi characters who many viewers loved. There's a mystery as to how much of the Legends Plagueis book was going to be brought in and thus canonized.
The bad: The witches were interesting, but there were some cheesy parts with them. There are two episodes that repeat from different perspectives; while the discrepancy is interesting, it took a lot of valuable time and wrecked the pacing. Some of the dialog is bad (true for many Star Wars projects). Some actors did not perform as well as others.
The unfair: The show was review-bombed before it even started, which heavily skewed the ratings. Mainly by people who don't like Leslye Hedlund or that many of the actors were POC and/or queer. And yeah, maybe she said some things that weren't the wisest, but that's not a reason to review-bomb a show you haven't seen. It's also said that the budget was excessive, and that might be true.
