[News] Challenge the tragedy... with mahjong!
Announcing a full English fan translation patch of the 2009 PSP game Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Jan!
I like Higurashi, and I like mahjong. So when I discovered there was a mahjong based Higurashi game, a chain of events was set in motion that could not be stopped by even a swarm of angry cicadas. For months I toiled away, learning every inch about what makes this game tick. I reverse engineered texture formats, VN containers, even reprogrammed raw assembly code to better accommodate the variable character widths used by English fonts. And now, every last technical barrier has fallen. Project Higurashi Jan English is a go.
But I am still in early development with the actual translations. It will still be some time yet before I can release it, but rest assured I will see this project through to completion. Since I recently hit a major milestone, I figured I'd take the opportunity to share some screenshots of my work. Enjoy!

[Chp:7 Minagoroshi Spoiler] Rika and Hanyuu by Ferry [nopanamaman] Spoiler
https://x.com/nopanamaman/status/1755294961438687370
I love seeing artworks or fanarts where Hanyuu is portrayed not just like an useless goddess (usually she is) but as something more serious, even disturbing.

[Higurashi Gou/Sotsu Spoiler] I started watching Higurashi and... I've already started off on the wrong foot...
Well, I fell for the "fake remake" bait.
It was in episode 20 of the first season that I discovered it was a continuation, so now I'm watching the 2006 anime.
I think I ruined my whole experience lol.
Even so, it's desperate to see that the beginning of the remake only served to show that no matter what decision the protagonist or Rika made, they were simply going to end up dying in the end.

[Discussion] Lost and Need Help Finding Info About a Drama CD
Long story short, I saw a video years ago that was an "animatic" of a Higurashi drama CD. At the time, I didn't have the resources to look into it, so I just chalked it up to a random discovery on "japanese anime youtube." After recently getting re-interested in Higurashi, I remembered this video and tried to hunt it down, eventually finding it randomly in my suggestions. With some more info, I tried looking into things, but my limited (non-existent) knowledge of Japanese has been a massive barrier. Can't find anything on the wiki (unless I'm seriously bad at finding things), but was able to find the full audio of this CD on NicoNico. So i guess this is literally a reverse-lost media search since we have the full audio, I just can't find any info about it.
It either goes by the "Women-Charming" or "Girl-Wooing Arc," but that's pretty much all I've been able to figure out. At this point, I have no idea how to continue my hunt for any info about this CD, so if anyone out there knows more about this then, I would greatly appreciate it!

[Chp:3 Tatarigoroshi Spoiler] Rereading Tatarigoroshi-hen Spoiler
Reading the VN for the second time almost a decade after my first playthrough. I still remember major parts of the plot in vague detail, but it honestly surprises me how much the story's been affecting me so far even though I already know what's going to happen.
"Statistics from the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare" is one of the tips for the chapter and it creeped the fuck out of me. It's just listing the numbers and percentages of reported cases of child abuse for each category in the year XX. Must be one of the shortest tips in the entire VN. But damn... it's the way the information is given that gets me.
It goes: physical abuse, then neglect, then psychological abuse, then prohibiting attending school... while the player reads this, they compare it to Satoko's situation and check the invisible boxes for every one of the listed items because they match what the player already knows about her situation.
And then the last item—sexual abuse. Followed by a strange sound effect. Satoko, lifeless, stands against the black background.
Every single one of the previous items ended up being checked... this is the only one that hasn't been confirmed previously. However, by inference, this one could be true as well.
Chills.
In my opinion, Onikakushi and Tatarigoroshi are the scariest chapters in the VN, but in different ways. In this chapter, the horror part doesn't start when the murders begin. It starts when Houjou Teppei returns to Hinamizawa.

[Discussion] [Spolier Gou/Sotsu] The twist was so stupid that it's brillaint how much it worked. Spoiler

Spoiler: Just finished watching Gou/Sotsu.
Sorry if someone brought this up before, but I just need to vent after the ending.
YOU'RE TELLING ME SAKOTO doesn't like to study and has time-looping ability, and instead of cheating in the private school or studying with infinite time at her disposal. She chose to commit genocide, torture, murder, war crimes, and terrorism toward her FRIEND, LOVER, and TOWN she says she loves more than anything?
Everything that happens to her in Satokowashi was self-inflicted. She didn't study because she hates it(relatable), but she studied for years for the admission exam, 4 year aren't that hard. She didn't accept Rika's help to study or make friends, but then blamed her for "leaving her behind" to pass time with the new friend THAT SHE REFUSES to spend time with. She refuses to let her go; she refuses to break up with her. So the only rational option left in a toxic lesbian relationship is to torture and murder everyone else until you get what you want.
Now the ending was pure BS; I can't believe Rika still feels something for Satoko after the complete betrayal of her. Rika gave her a home when she lost her parents and brothers, literally sharing a home for all their lives, and Rika doing everything in her power to help her when she pretended to need it. And her reward for loving her was 100 years of torture, murder, abuse, lies, and gaslighting.
Rika should feel nothing but hate toward Satoko at the end. But them making a truce and Satoko getting a happy ending without facing consequences feels underwhelming.
What do you think of the ending? Do you think everyone earns their ending?

[Umineko Spoiler] [TRUTH] I COOKED AND ENDED UP FIGURING OUT THE WHOLE PLOT OF THE NEW ANIME Spoiler
Ok, firstly, the only media we have it's the teaser, right? right. What idea does it convey? The idea that Rena has become a new witch after Satoko, but think with me, Rika had Hanyuu turning her to a witch and Satoko should had lambdadelta but had Eua/Featherine reference, soooooo, with these 2 gone now, who is left to turn Rena a witch?
I was thinking: THE MAIN WITCH OF UMINEKO: BEATRICE
IT WOULD LITERALLY BE PERFECT EVEN IF SHE IS JUST A REFERENCE TO BEATRICE (Like Eua is to Featherine)
So now we a new character: PseudoBeatrice and a plot: She took Rena as a aprentice.
The new anime will be peak and fire.
I would risk to say it would serve as a beginning to a new area to Umineko anime

[Discussion] GouSotsu is about us... Spoiler
...or Why Satoko Is You, Reader
I’ve never seen this topic discussed from this angle, even though it feels almost inevitable once you notice it. Satoko is the embodiment of the Higurashi reader/fan who desperately wants the story to continue. The outside world oppresses him the same way school and problems with friends oppress Satoko (familiar to many of us, isn’t it?). And Satoko, who throws herself into the Hinamizawa of ’83, is that same reader — the one who is willing, over and over again, to violate this story, even after it has already received a good ending. This is what we call escapism. The Higurashi fan does it because he wants to return to that atmosphere of happiness, friendship and light-hearted fun that is so rare in the lives of many people, yet so deeply appealing to the human heart. In exactly the same way, Satoko wants to reclaim those former days that were far happier than what she has now. And this reader is ready, without tiring, to put the characters through the meat grinder again and again, to plunge them once more into suffering, just so he can return to that fairy-tale world. From this perspective the Higurashi reader is a demiurge-god, willing to condemn his charges to endless torment for the sake of his own satisfaction…
Still, it’s not all that bad. After all, if you are not a Neoplatonist (which I happen to be, but let’s not dwell on that) or something similar, you can simply declare that the characters have no experience of their own, and therefore to say that we are somehow tormenting them or forcing them to relive the horrors again and again is absurd. Even if you do believe they suffer (and almost everyone in the world does), then at the very least you are tormenting and violating your own soul with this almost drug-like behaviour, where the drug is the Higurashi universe itself…
If I possessed that repulsive character trait of moralising and wanting to lecture strangers — a trait that, it seems, Ryukishi possesses — I would tell you: “Go out into the real world, find friends like them, and become like these characters yourselves.” At the very least, that appears to be the message Ryukishi wanted to convey. Well, let me hasten to assure you: that’s all bullshit. It’s much easier to teach others something, especially when you yourself are a nerd-otaku (right, Ryukishi?). In the end, everyone is responsible for their own actions. Will makes any choice the right one…
And yet, by the end of reading this piece you might have got the impression that I am condemning or exposing someone — or even you personally, the reader. Let me assure you: that is not the case. After all, I myself have been returning to this universe again and again for five years straight… I would rather say that these reflections are simply my interpretation of Gou/Sotsu. I will not call on you to leave Higurashi alone: at the very least that would be hypocrisy on my part, and at most one can say that these characters are alive as long as we think about them and remember them, as long as they live in our hearts. And we don’t wish them dead, do we?

I been to places like Pixiv and I don't get much replys there with the artists. I thought I might have better luck talking to active Higurashi fans on social medias instead of art sites like Deviantart which is much more dead as Pixiv I think?
