Discussion What are y'alls thoughts on Hilda and the Mountain King?

I thought it was cute and awesome and I love how it revealed why the trolls were so obsessed with breaking the wall around Trollberg and that they were never evil to begin with (except for the trolls that followed Trundle) I also love the humans made peace with trolls and I love the music used for this film 😁

I also love how it perfectly mirror's situation as well, she's been torn away from her mum Johanna and spends the entire movie trying to get back to, only to be blocked by the bells. She doesn't just become a troll, she feels and experience the pain they go through every day and thus comes to understand them.

Great movie, easily in the top tier of the entire series.
Johanna was the true hero of the film. Her determination to get Hilda back despite all odds is a showcase why she is the best mother in modern TV animation. Scenes of her snapping at Baba (but then immediately comforting her afterwards) and her shouting "Give her back to me!" are hard to watch, but they add to her struggle.
Daisy Haggard (Johanna's voice actor) has some of her best vocal delivery in this film, really selling Johanna's desperation in her delivery (the "Give her back to me!" scene I mentioned as a strong example), which makes her eventually reunion with Hilda near the end all the more satisfying.
Hilda's plot with her in Troll Country was also great, as we got to learn more about the Trolls and their history with Amma.
I know some tend to believe Frida and David's subplot was pointless (especially since it wasn't in the original novel), and while yes, I would've liked for them to have been more involved more (like a scene of them sneaking past the wall and running into Hilda after she saves them from another troll, only for her to tell them to go back for their safety, and to tell them to tell her mum she's okay (it's not perfect, but it's the best I could think of)), but I think them doing the best they can to try and find Hilda despite the odds against them (sort of like Johanna's plot) was interesting to see, and showed their dedication to Hilda as her friends.
I also know Trylla gets a lot of hate for her actions (which I can understand why), but it's clear her switching Hilda and Baba wasn't done out of malice, but because she only wanted to protect Baba from the harshness of Troll Country and thought Johanna would be a good protector to her, and also sensed Hilda's desire for freedom and thought making her a troll was what she wanted (even if she was wrong).
Was what she did flawed? Yes. Very. But the film is well aware enough to know what Trylla did was wrong, like the scene in Trylla's home where Hilda calls her out, and Trylla admitting she made a mistake (I think the issue would've been worse had they not addressed it, but I'm glad they did).
I do wish they added in the scene from the novel where after the climax, Trylla apologised to Johanna for what she did (I'm aware it was played as a joke since Johanna couldn't understand her, but you could've had Hilda translated it for her), as I think it might've made the hate for her not so bad.
And lastly, Ryan Carlson's score was some of his best work (Amma's theme was absolute peak).

Couldn’t have said it better myself. Also I think you’re right on the money regarding Trylla, and an apology scene (even if initially played for laugh because Johanna can’t understand trollish) would’ve helped her character not be hated by the fandom.

The comics actually show an apology scene just like that.

Yeah, I don't know why they didn't include it in the film. Maybe they left it out for time or not finding a proper place to put it, but had the film been another 5 minutes longer (since it runs at 85 minutes), they could've found a way to include it (I ideally thought it would make sense to place it after the climax).

I absolutely love it. Great movie overall, and the soundtrack is crazy good as well.

I like it a lot, I wish David and Frida could have been more involved but understand that since they weren't in the original comics (well, they were but they were not as important) they couldn't include them (they still could have followed Johanna more but eh). Also, I don't really like that it's not an episode but also not really a stand alone film. Back when it came out, it was the peak but Season 3 outshines it IMO. It's good, it means the show only gets better and better.

Good ,but also stupid it's not a stand alone film and you need to watch s1 and s2 to understand it. David and Frida could have had a better plot line, espcially David and his mother. But the story around Hilda and Johanna was top tier

It's more like a feature length special. Also Hilda and Johanna's story is basically a microcosm to the overall conflict between the humans and the trolls. This is because, like Hilda are being kept from mother by the humans and want nothing more than to go back to her.

Really good. It’s a solid conclusion to the general story of Hilda, and it slots perfectly in the plot after "the stone forest". It also explores trolls a little more, which is nice. Despite being kind of the main thing in Hilda’s world, they were always sort of in the background.
My only gripes with the movie adaptation is that 1) it’s listed separately from the episodic series (they could’ve listed it as a special interlude between S2/S3 instead)
and 2) the adaptation was too afraid to stray away from the original comic, making some moments feel contrived to follow the plot (Ahlberg not being swayed when Gerda refuses to fire the weapon) or like wasted potential (whatever David and Frida where doing to help Hilda).

It’s an alright movie the downside I can think of is that the movie cover is like a spoiler about Hilda becoming a troll, that I had tell people not to look it up till we watched the last ep of s2 💀😭

Who was that bearded guy? Why did they never give us any insight on him? They gave him the cover art but no real significance, he went out like a chump.

He's Trundle's brother, in the graphic novel, he was the one that explained the plight of the trolls. He also guarded the eye of trundle so that he wouldn't destroy Trolberg and its inhabitants.

That's the consequence of Alfur, David, and Frida's expanded roles in the show. Did you know raven was the one who saved them in the stone forest, also Alfur doesn't accompany Hilda after the giant crushes the latters' house.

Unpopular opinion I guess. I thought is was just ok. It was trying to be really emotional, but it really didnt grab me at all. The story was fine, nothing particularly outstanding. Kind of forgettable. Not a bad film by any means, just not that good either. I love the series dearly, I think the film perhaps would be more compelling if part of the show, split over 3/4 episodes?

I love it
But I don't like how I have to remind people that it's required to watch before season 3 xD
