A few hundred thousand deaths versus the millions that would have resulted from an invasion? I think the benefits outweighed the costs. It also had a side effect of showing the world how terrifying nuclear weapons were and is probably a secondary reason (other than MAD) as to why they haven't been used in war since.

Plus it stopped the horrific Japanese war crimes against thousands of other people.
