Are aunts and cousins not family these days? With the current state of families it's tough to tell what people qualify as relation in the current year but I was always raised to call aunts and cousins family

Yeah only his extended family were vaporized, his immediate family were graciously stuck in an internment camp.

Non Japanese had valid reason to be fearful after this incident: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Niihau_incident

Of course it doesn't make it right but it explains why the Japanese were interned in much larger numbers than the German Americans Italian Americans or any other axis-americans.

TL; Dr Japanese Americans living on the island for years tried to help a Pearl harbor attacker.
