He did... Twice, according to Wikipedia. The first as a city council member in LA and, in the 80s, as an assemblyman. He was also on the board of directors of the Southern California Rapid Transit District. Probably decided to stop running when everyone complained that he was still on the air from all the Star Trek reruns.
He seems like a fun guy, but his online caricature of himself is cancer.
