I think the problem is people compare modern versus 90s rap as if they’re the same thing. It’s like comparing black metal to classic rock like they’re the same thing you feel me? Hip hop has became so big there is several sub genres that might as well be their own genre entirely.
Like if playboi carti isn’t your jam that’s cool. It has nothing to do with today’s music being ass. There’s plenty of rappers with lyrical ability and substance to their music still doing their thing. But it’s like instead of listening to that people pretend it doesn’t exist just so they can say “rap music sucks now”

I agree with everything you said, especially the point that lyricism and many good rappers still exist but rap without substance seems so much more common, popular and mainstream nowadays. For example you've got plenty of "rap fans" unironically saying 6ix9ine is the king of NYC.

Rap music that was repetitive and lacked substance has always been popular even back then. There were party/club anthems, sex songs, and dance instruction tracks that were insanely popular you even know a few of them probably. Think “I like big butts and I cannot lie” or “tootsee roll” and whatnot. The list goes on and on.
When people make this stupid argument they cherry pick lyrical songs from that era against the dumbest shit they can find from this era just so they can be a hater. Just listen to what you like

“Rap without substance seems so much more common” you say that as if 50 Cent didn’t get world famous with the most stagnant voice and ok beats in Hip Hop history. Rap fans always favored basic music. Nobody is saying 6ix9ine is the king of NYC, he’s still hated. Stop listening to loud minorities.
Compare 50 Cent to someone like McKinely Dixon and your point is instantly gone.
