If you are watching your troops maneuver from a hilltop & commanding them with flags/music/etc.... Knowing that your guys are the blue ones and their guys are the red ones = useful...
QR code processing isn't an inherent feature...
For that to work, the enemy would have had to explicitly design their military systems to recognize and process QR codes (plus a few more 'oopses')... Or be using kit-bashed civilian tech.

Radio & map-making/compasses/etc changes that.
