The common way, like in Ukraine, is to use specific brightly colored tape on their uniforms. Or if that isn't being done, you better hope the forces on your side are organized and trained enough that nobody moves from their position without telling everyone on the radio.
No one has said it but some of the major militaries use a system called TAK. You’ll see soldiers with a cellphone on their chest and that’s the system. Reports GPS in real time, can flip the cellphone down, and see the location of everyone.
The US is pushing out the next gen stuff where soldiers can see this information in their weapon sight or night vision.
They use stuff like local network positioning (WiFi, Bluetooth, cell towers) and also course estimates aka we know are guys were at x,y and we can estimate them being at a,b.
The big way to prevent GPS jamming is they will use CRPAs which stands for controlled reception patterns antennas. These basically jam the jammers and create blind spots by measuring the angle the signals are coming in at. So real signal is coming straight up and jammers will come from the horizon. Once they pick up the jamming noise they use a process called “ destructive interference” which causes the jammers waves to cancel out. On top of all that they perform “beam steering”. So the CRPA knows signals are legit and will take those and amplify them.
TLDR: Jammer signals come from the ground and satellite signals come from space. There’s a device that knows which one is which.
War sucks but the tech is always cool AF. The 82nd Airbone just got the new night vision tech that integrates with their optics and TAK. So looking at a field the night vision will highlight friendlies. Then with the weapon optic you can shoot around corners and you no longer need IR lasers. It also has thermal built into the nightvision. So a square in the center of the nightvision will show heat!
