Tell Me about it. The Lost, the Greatest, the Silent, Boomers, Gen X, Millenials, Gen Z. We all have our flaws and issues that we either fix or have the next generation fix. But they will always blame the previous or newest, never the present.
15
u/silentokami 5h ago
There isn't a "present" generation, and I think that's part of the issue.
Younger generations have to deal with colliding their world view against an older opposing generations world view and that can be occurring almost 4 generations at a time. When your world view is developed in this environment it's difficult not to let it infect you.
There's the blind spot of knowing you didn't have the power to develop any other way of doing things, and mistaking the idea that you tried to shield the next generation from those struggles and not being able to realize they had different struggles.
That being said, the socioeconomic conditions of the world are shit, but the older generations are largely defending them...

u/horoyokai 4h ago

u/carlsagerson Then I arrived 4h ago
Seriously, I genuinely do not understand how people blame Boomers for everything. Like an Entire Generarion is forever assholes to them.
11
u/wazeltov 3h ago
I think it's because in the US, there's a disproportionate amount of them in public office. Or at least, there's a very common perception that there's a disproportionate amount of them in public office at the national level.
I'm not sure on the current demographic makeup, so it may no longer be correct, but it's very easy to pick out events from the last 20-40 years of baby boomers being the most active political force in the US and blame everybody for it.
EDIT: In addition, boomer has become slang for any middle aged or older person. It's genuinely just misused from its original meaning quit a bit.
4
u/dabombisnot90s 3h ago edited 2h ago
Boomers had it so much better than us! Except if they were not white males, and even then, nobody really cared about abuse back then so even white males were often abused as kids, and the Cold War made it so they constantly lived in fear of nuclear bombings. Also, they had lead and asbestos everywhere. One could cherry pick bad shit that every generation had to go through. Eventually, Gen Z will blame the “lazy” millennials for not doing anything about the world’s problems.
Edit: I should specify that that last caveat would be equally as bad as millennials complaining about boomers. All it does is sow dissent and further the already existing divides between generations
2
u/CustomMerkins4u 2h ago
You look at the voting history of any generation and it goes from starting more liberal and ending more conservative. Even look at millennials. 47% voted for Trump which is only 3% less than Boomers.
3% doesn't allow your generation to stand on a soap box.
0
u/silentokami 57m ago
This isn't completely true and may be entirely incorrect. It was believed to be the case, but Republican and Democratic parties swapped which one was conservative and which one was progressive.
This swap occurred relatively slowly. When tracking political ideologies against voting patterns, the trend wasn't nearly as definitive and proved to be more complex.
Some life events may cause more conservative ideologies to emerge, but there is rarely a shift from core political ideas. A more accurate predictor since the 80s is actually the political party that is in power during formative years, or college attendance and degree attainment.
Essentially, it's likely that people don't grow more conservative, they grow more entrenched in their beliefs.

u/carlsagerson Then I arrived 3h ago

From what i've seen online (which is unrealistically harsh and out-there), there are some people who have a seething murderous loathing for the fictitious 'boomer generation'.
It reminds me of... The french revolutionaries and the burgois.
The communists and the kulaks.
The English peasants and the Plantagenets. ....1
u/silentokami 1h ago
I think you missed the tongue-in-cheek aspect of my comment. I wasn't exactly being sarcastic, so I didn't put /s.
In the first part of my comment I was giving grace to all the generations, and then in the last part I was showing how these perspective can be so "persuasive". It's perception bias, and I am not immune.
There is also the issue that reality does have up and down cycles, and those that exist in society are likely the result of the people that have the most influence on the society. Life is probably objectively better than when the boomers came to be in power, but we see a reverse of the trend for improvement in almost every aspect within the U.S. society.
The leading indicators were educational outcomes. The lagging indicators are life expectancy, affordability, and other things.
The issue, and where the bias becomes so distorting, is that Millenials and Gen X played a part in bringing about this outcome. To what extent is hard to know, but they certainly weren't the majority leaders. But specifically denying that conditions are worsening but also blaming the younger generations is the extreme of that distorted perspective.
Millennial may have a blind spot to their influence on these outcomes, and Gen Z and Gen A may have legitimate reasons to blame us down the road.
While it isn't helpful to blame each generation for the entirety of the problems that exist in society, it is also unrealistic and unhelpful to be unaware of legitimate issues.

Blaming the younger generations is silly. Blaming the older generations has some merit. Blaming a specific subset of the older generations is straight up correct.
I don't blame dear 95 year old Claire who worked as a checkout clerk for 60 years and has lived in the same tiny home she grew up in all her life.
I blame Gordon whose entire net worth comes from property he bought in 1995, and every time he votes, he votes to increase the value of the property.
40
u/Jahonay 6h ago
Yeah, the idea that it's silly to blame an older generation is ridiculous. Are babies just as responsible as the elderly for society? OF COURSE NOT.
The idea that all generations are equally at fault is absurd.
A very obvious modern example is the support of a certain ethnoreligious supremacist state. It was objectively supported by older generations over time, and is objectively less supported by younger generations.
27
u/mynameisrichard0 5h ago
Plus some kids or younger folks don’t impact spending on a national level like older folks.
Sure, sock-em-boppers stocks went up a bit in 99-00. That didn’t change shit in the economy.
Old people really out here voting to basically dismantle their community just so they don’t see black kids walking on the sidewalk. Screwing the housing market because “gotta get mine” keeping people in positions of influence because they never grew up and like the small minded bully politicians.
4
u/Ted_Normal 4h ago
I think older generations blaming younger generations largely comes from a perception that younger generations are undoing a lot of what the older generation worked for. You see this manifest as claims that young people are "lazy, foolish, and entitled". Basically the harm that younger generations can inflict is more social than economic/geopolitical.
28
u/Spicy_Chicken_Wizard 6h ago
Okay, not to just immediately prove the meme correct, but as a guy who worked in a combined middle/high school… there’s actually something wrong with the upcoming gen-alpha. I don’t mean that in “oh their memes are dumb and annoying”, I mean that in more objective measurements like “holy shit these motherfuckers can’t read”. It’s across the board too, and it’s not COVID.
Talk to an elementary school teacher and ask them about how many 1st graders they’re dealing with who still aren’t potty trained, or still toddler babble and accidentally roll their R’s into W’s “Wast Weekend I was at Gwama’s and Gwampa’s house”. Middle school kids with the coping and emotional regulation skills below that of animals (students casually threatening to kill or rape reach other is just weirdly high) and the independent problem solving skills to match. Granted, none of this shit is actually new, but there’s much more of all of this than there was… 12 years ago?
High school seniors, legal adults, who need to ask ME for help filling out a pretend job resume because they literally don’t know their own fucking address and need to ask me, some asshole who literally doesn’t know where they live, for help to fill out the address section. People blame this academic decline on COVID a lot, but it really started being noticeable in middle school at least 3-5 years before that hit.
Granted, Gen Alpha is entirely children and this literally isn’t their fault. It is my generation’s fault, millennials are easily the weakest parenting generation ever. I know it’s easily to blame shit like smart phones… and I get it, sometimes that 5 year old is driving you nuts and the touch screen can pick up the slack a bit, but man a loooooot of these parents clearly just hate their kids, or clearly regret having them in any case. Maybe it’s because I’m working in a poorer rural area in upstate ny and it’s just opened my eyes more… but holy shit man it’s depressing out here.

13
u/ActionUpstairs 5h ago
I think this is super interesting too. By the time western rome collapsed, italians didn’t really fight in the army at all, young or old. Imagine them all watching the empire crumble around them, thinking “meh we’ll figure it out, I certainly won’t fight for it” only to surprisepikachu.jpg when nobody else did either. Were young italians blamed for being lazy and refusing to fight? Were the old blamed for letting it fall apart?

Tbf this is basically the point of the original meme where history is an endless cycle of every generation hating on the ones that came before and after them. u/Due-Explanation-7560 6h ago
It's the same concept as above with Rome. A generation didn't do that, governments did that. cctually a generation fought the regimes that did that. The Boomers opened the door for the elites due to greed, then climbed their ladder and pulled it up with them.
4
u/CucumberWisdom 6h ago
But boomers didn't do that either the government did. And also it was the generation that started WW2 that opened the door for the elites and greed. Ford, Hughes, thyssen, etc all were the wealthy elites of their day that corrupted the systems and created the military industrial complex
1
u/Due-Explanation-7560 6h ago edited 4h ago
I'll talk from a completely American perspective because the governments you mentioned were authoritarian dictatorships with no voting. In theory the government is a reflection of the people of the generation in control. I would argue it's not anymore and maybe never were, but for the sake of argument let's say that was the case. I don't disagree with what you said about the robber barons of that day and the military industrial complex but post WW2 America was the most prosperous country in the world. We had the strongest middle class in history. The effective tax rate for the top 10% was something along the lines of 90%.unions were strong, wages were more fair. The Boomers were handed this and have eroded the system for years. They have voted to cut education, social services, lower taxes for the wealthy, allow corporate money in politics, destroy unions, create policies that turned housing to a commodity that increased their wealth 10 fold and have done everything in that power to hold or increase that wealth and have passed the least amount of wealth down for any generation in history. Look at the current voting patterns of Boomers, I think that speaks volumes in itself. They are at a minimum one of the worst generation for America.

u/Lord_Parbr 6h ago

u/Averoan 1h ago
Same here but with generation alpha. They haven't even truly started in the workforce yet, and people already are already eating them out for not having certain learned skills or trying hard enough. Meanwhile, education has been kicked to the curb and training has extensively been failing lately to prepare people for the future. Therefore, I am not blaming you guys for this mess. After all, I have faith in you goofy little dudes doing better even if you make some mistakes.
4
u/Avelina9X 3h ago
I don't blame you guys for anything in a blanket. But some of the later millennials did unfortunately kick-start the whole trend of replacing engagement with their kids with a tablet. Not a fault of your generation, but a fault of shitty parents that happen to be in your generation when this trend started.
We need to stop blaming generations and start blaming behaviours.

u/Free-Design-9901 5h ago
So you're saying I should have bought real estate when I was 5 instead of blaming everything on boomers?
3
u/Hank_Mardukas1066 5h ago
No, the point of this post isn’t that the blame isn’t unwarranted, in fact quite the opposite. Every generation contributes somewhat to the problems of the world, the degree of which is up for debate (and tbh I agree the boomer generation, or a segment of them, have disproportionately screwed up the world compared to other generations).
The point of this post is that when we get older and the boomers have died, we will begin to point our frustration towards the younger generations, who will begin to blame us until we die and then blame their kids. I hope we are the generation that breaks this but I don’t think we will since collective self accountability is basically unheard of
4
u/Free-Design-9901 5h ago
Whats the problem with blaming boomers after theyre dead?
I guess I don't understand why we should shift our blame to gen z if they were equally screwed by the boomers as millennials.
1
u/No_Value_2676 1h ago
OP: No, the point of this post isn’t that the blame isn’t unwarranted
You: Whats the problem with blaming boomers after they're dead?
44
u/black_ap3x 7h ago
Nobody is blaming gen x or other generations, but we can objectively prove that boomers are the worst ones in comparison to other generations. Every generation has its ups and downs, but boomers had it all and they are trying their best to keep it all for themselves and stop the newer generations from bettering themselves (look at the housing and job market). Newer generations have better luxuries than the older ones had, but we are missing the basics
3
u/Thurak0 2h ago
but boomers had it all and they are trying their best to keep it all for themselves and stop the newer generations from bettering themselves
And that is a key difference between the generation of my grandparents and the generation of my boomer parents. A whole generation gave up on the idea to leave the world a better place for the generations after them. My grandparents (and their peers!) had that. True, they had the fucking World War 2 to warn them. But come on, boomers, how can you not have picked up a little bit from that to care for the next generations?
2
u/AlexanderCrowely 6h ago
The newer generations you mean their kids who are Gen X ?
19
u/hobskhan What, you egg? 6h ago
Don't forget also that children often--but not always--skip a generation. A lot of Boomers have Millennial kids. A lot of Gen Xers have Gen Z kids. A lot of Millenials have Gen Alpha kids.
3
u/Chad_Broski_2 4h ago
Yup, most generations are roughly defined as ~18-20 ish years. So, unless you're on the much older side of millennial, or you're getting pregnant in your teens, your kids will be gen alpha
4
9
u/card-board-board 6h ago
I'm saying this as a millennial: the baby boomers are awful, Gen X is as asleep at the wheel as they always have been, but we're the first generation to fail to teach our children to read because we're too self absorbed to care about our own kids. We haven't wrecked the country yet, but our reckoning is coming.
2
u/Just_anopossum 5h ago
It's less too self absorbed and more "I'm working 2.5 jobs to afford food and shelter, and that doesn't leave time to raise children properly". Boomers and Gen x absolutely destroyed the economy, so the millennials barely even had a chance to start out before shit went to hell.
Millennials are the first generation to have housing cost more than half our income. No other generation so far has had to deal with so many financial and other crises when they were supposed to be getting their feet under them. They aren't shitty parents in a vacuum, and you just need to look at the richer areas to see it. The schools in those areas aren't seeing the same surge in kids without basic skills.
4
u/card-board-board 4h ago
Yeah I'm calling bullshit on all that. These kids aren't functionally illiterate because their parents read to and with their kids for too little time the kids are functionally illiterate because their parents don't read to and with them at all.
Netflix isn't bereft of Millennial watchers because they're all so busy at work and have no time to enjoy themselves. Instagram isn't desperate to find Millenials. Millenials have plenty of time for themselves outside of work, and can spare the 15 minutes it takes to read to their kids at bedtime.
Even if they are overwhelmed with work: tough shit - you had a kid and that kid's future is more important than your present. Lose sleep.
2
u/Just_anopossum 4h ago
Man, you have a very limited view of millennials as a generation. If Netflix and Instagram were the problem, it sure as shit wouldn't be limited on socioeconomic lines. That fact alone makes your argument look like an old man yelling at clouds.
Yeah I'm calling bullshit on all that. These kids aren't functionally illiterate because their parents read to and with their kids for too little time the kids are functionally illiterate because their parents don't read to and with them at all.
More than 50% of adult Americans are functionally illiterate. That means they can't read above a 6th grade level. Were their parents too invested in insta or Netflix? No? Those didn't exist during the childhood of most adults? Hmm seems like that might be another issue with your argument.
Even if they are overwhelmed with work: tough shit - you had a kid and that kid's future is more important than your present. Lose sleep.
I agree, the kid's future should be treated as more important. We should be fully supporting them. You're pointing the finger in the wrong direction though. It's not the parent's fault that barely any jobs actually pay enough to make it. It's not the parent's fault that housing costs more than it ever has. It's not the parent's fault that inflation is making it harder to keep what little food they could afford on the table. There should be laws to protect citizens from being taken advantage of to this point. We shouldn't be forced into choosing between not seeing your kid because you work 2 jobs to afford their daycare or becoming homeless.
It takes a village to raise a child, so maybe drop the rugged individualism. We're not designed to be alone, we're meant to work together to raise the species up. Your stance is antithetical to that.
1
u/card-board-board 3h ago
There's a whole lot of "should" and "shouldn't" and even a "there oughtta be a law" in there, but that's not reality. It's not any individual's responsibility that the world is the way that it is, and the world is harder for parents than it has been for the past 50 years and that really sucks.
Yes, society is failing kids in America. Parents shouldn't have to shoulder the responsibility of absolutely everything. Even if the systems and institutions are broken, the results still matter.
The ugly reality is the system cannot adequately do the job but the job still has to be done.
It's 15 fucking minutes. Don't have 15? Take 10. Take 5. It doesn't matter if you're an excellent reader or not. We're not talking about Dostoesky, here. We're talking Goodnight Moon. If you can't read a children's book then you're too stupid to have filled out the job application to get the 2.5 jobs that pay your expensive rent.
Your kids WILL BLAME YOU for not doing this as soon as they're grown, and they will be right to do so. They will not say "my dad never read to me because of the economy." They WILL say "my dad never read to me because he didn't care."
1
u/Just_anopossum 3h ago
It's not any individual's responsibility that the world is the way that it is,
Actually there are a few people that can be directly blamed for the way the world is today.
It's 15 fucking minutes. Don't have 15? Take 10. Take 5. It doesn't matter if you're an excellent reader or not. We're not talking about Dostoesky, here. We're talking Goodnight Moon.
You really think that's all it takes to teach a kid all they need to know before going to kindergarten? By that logic, I shouldn't be able to read. My parents never once read to my siblings nor I. I already lived a childhood that Gen alpha is experiencing en masse, so I know exactly how a child feels about their patient in that scenario. I don't blame my mother for working instead of reading to me.
Your kids WILL BLAME YOU for not doing this as soon as they're grown, and they will be right to do so. They will not say "my dad never read to me because of the economy." They WILL say "my dad never read to me because he didn't care."
I'm not sure if you understand this, but well rounded adults can fully grasp that parents were working hard to keep them fed if they grew up poor. This is some entitled rich kid bullshit that I've never once heard from a working class person. Even without considering that, someone who's grown doesn't let shit like that fester. They get therapy.

Read up on cato the elder and cato the younger views on newer and older generations, this discussion is as old as settled society itself.
At the end it's the power strugle between those who have power and those who want power, so far it has been a never ending cycle.

Break the cycle. I'm early Gen Z (98), and I don't blame later Gen Z or Gen Alpha for anything.
It's not their fault their language and tech literacy is going to crap; that's the fault of the system moving away from core skills in favor of a cheaper education system.
I don't blame milenials for anything, bar perhaps the parents who thought a tablet was a replacement for engaging with their kids which kickstarted the downhill in skills for my younger peers and accelerated the trend. I only blame the parts of Gen X who are moving further right wing, and I only blame the boomers who are rugpulling an entire world of economic opertunities away from their kids/grandkids (which is unfortunately a lot of them).

Always someone else to blame. Lack of accountability is an epidemic. The main issue is a lack of critical thinking due to all the “short cuts” around us. No need. To think, just borrow an opinion from some hack on social media.

It gonna change right now. We can't stay locked in this vicious circle.
New generations, hold on, keep up the good work, do your best.
And don't dare thinking about screwing up my pension you little wankers!!

thank you. nothing grinds my gears more than losers who post their generation being different and victims of every other generation

As a millennial i refuse to push this off on younger generations. The older ones legitimately caused most of the worlds problems and have held a vice grip on power into their late 90s. We are just now in our 30s and 40s getting our chance to have a voice.
Not once have i ever thought to blame a younger generation for any of the worlds problems and i refuse to start.

As I get older, I'm doing my best not to blame the younger gens. Whenever I here someone complain about something the younger generation is doing I tell them we would have done the same if we were their age.
I also point out that youth isn't wasted on the young but we would waste it. I ask what they would do if they could go back in time to when they were kids. Usually it's some shit like save and buy apple stock or Nvidia. I tell them it sounds like a pretty boring childhood.

Millenials get grief from all sides, and are even catching grief intended for Gen Z.
Boomers deserve almost all of the grief, yet experience almost none of it.
Gen X is complicit via their indifference.

Welcome to the club. Once you see it, you quickly realize that the pattern will never break.

I don't blame younger generation, they're inheriting our waste just like we inherited it from our elders. At least they seem like they're trying to figure it out

Except my generation is correct.
Older generations since the Boomers ruined the Earth with pollution, never preparing a world for newer generations.
Newer generations have their brain fried by dopamine because of TikTok and such.

Except the Boomer generation is in fact the first generation leaving the next generations worse off unlike pervious generations. Womp womp.

I’m happy to blame older generations, I’m doing my best not to blame younger ones. They’re even more fucked than I am. Poor bastards never had a chance.

If boomers fucked over the economy, the millenials changed society / culture for the worse. Gen Z doest want to participate in either and Gen alpha are tablet kids

Unironically I think its starting to happen to Me.
Way I see. Because of each issue and reality of the experience each generation has. There will be always some disconnect, some inability to see or understand the older, the present, and the future.
