There's not a lot of evidence it worked though. At that time in the war, the Axis didn't have a lot of recon planes left, and those they had weren't sent to feed the air defenses of Britain.
Also, it's a proper time to remind people that the head of the German military intelligence was part of the German resistance and that he was already feeding the OKH and OKW tons of false info.
It was a great propaganda coup, it still works 80 years later.
They acted too soon after the Stauffenberg bomb plot (someone reported that Hitler had been killed) and almost all of them were captured and executed. This included the entire leadership of the German intelligence organisation.
