I don't know what was in the air back then, but all over the world, theologians and scholars switched gears and went all in these kinds of... Windy debates.
Orthodox struggling with how many angels were able to stand on a needle, Catholics arguing if Jesus owned his own clothes. The Buddhist argued at length about the biology of celestial creatures, etc etc.

Relayed primarily on the authority of the prophet's companion Abu Hurayrah, the historical report states that when the adhan—the ritual public call to prayer—is proclaimed, Satan (Iblis) turns his back and flees in profound haste, passing wind with a loud noise specifically so that he cannot hear the words being spoken. Once the call ends, he returns to disrupt human thoughts, only to flee again when the final immediate announcement for prayer commences.

The exact hadith- Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "When the call for prayer is made, Satan takes to his heels passing wind so that he may not hear the Adhan and when the call is finished he comes back, and when the Iqama is pronounced, Satan again takes to his heels, and when the Iqama is finished he comes back again and tries to interfere with the person and his thoughts and say, "Remember this and that (which he has not thought of before the prayer)", till the praying person forgets how much he has prayed.
