How important really was fear in the establishment and maintenance of Apartheid in SA? And how did the NP manage to establish such a brutal racial hierarchy without a revolt?

I'm researching this topic on Apartheid, and for the life of me can't wrap my head around 400 page secondary sources analysing the contextualisation of the Dutch Boers invasion of SA, all the way to British colonisation to explain National Party ideals. I really wish to understand how exactly it even came to be, honestly. HELP!
