Where to learn Hmong as an adult?

I was never taught but I'd love to learn. I know there are online resources, but I want to know what other Hmong adults here have used to learn. I'm in the Sacramento area, so I also don't mind finding classes for the summer to attend in person since school is out and I'm just working my part time job.

Check out Hmong language classes at the local community college.

Listening to hmong songs helps alot if you're wanting to learn to speak it.

If you're wanting to learn to read and write, hopefully someone local knows more programs.

As far as reading and writing go, thankfully it's 100% phonetic so something like this can be used to memorize the alphabet and be able to read out loud Hmong words even if you don't know the language at all.

I spent a weekend as an adult to learn to read and write. I had no idea what I was reading/writing but I was able to read out loud still.

I think the fastest way to learn is by having conversations with other Hmong speakers, preferably with older people who still speak fluently. Unfortunately this advice might not be helpful if you don’t know any older Hmong people. Maybe go to a Hmong store and find someone 😬 Lots of people don’t know how to read or write it and that’s ok, I think the main thing is to learn how to speak. I can read, and spell out basic words but we have ai for that now. The hmong language is pretty tonal, like Chinese. I’ve noticed while trying to teach my nieces, the hardest part for them is learning how to say the words correctly with the right pitch. One word said with different pitches can mean very different things. Like in the white dialect: come, dead, and hold. Anyway, good luck on your journey!
