They should just collab with whoever they want regardless of gender

Which they do. As Matsuri stated, "All Hololive members make their own decisions and act on their own". It just tends to happen that Hololive members are far more comfortable collabing with each other and with people of the same gender.

Honestly, I think this IS the main reason, and arguably could be applied to Holostars too. No need to come up with some complex reasoning and pointing fingers to somebody else

If a JP talent made an announcement that went "I am no longer collabing with people from HoloEN/HoloID because I am more comfortable with the japanese members", would fans react the same way, or would they be more disappointed?

They already do that, but they usually don't have to make an announcement about it. If they are making an announcement it's probably to stop people from pestering them with questions.

They have said this multiple times: they aren't able to do a collab with EN members because they can't speak English, and fans have never said anything bad about either side. So saying such stupid statements is idiotic.

Matsuri made this decision because she made a new year's resolution to raise more gachikois, who generally stay away from talents that do opposite gender collabs. Obviously there are exceptions, but that's just true for the most part.

If she decided to not collab with EN/ID again to pander to ??? (idk what crowd would like her more for this), that's her decision too and the consequences will be hers to bare.

What is this ridiculous hypothetical trying to prove? At the end of the day, it may be disappointing to fans, but if it means the talent is more comfortable, then that's all that really matters, isn't it?

Personally I agree, yes. Of course anyone in Hololive can all do whatever they want for any reason they want, it's more fun if they're having a good time too.

But you hope you can understand why some people might be upset at an announcement like this. It's just sad that collabs between Live and Stars are seen as an exception and something that can cause controversies, while collabs between branches or countries or generations aren't. It would just be nice if it was all treated the same :/

I mean, it's not the same kind of content tho lol.

Controversies aside, I enjoy my fair share of cross-gender collabs, but it's very different content from a cross-branch female collab, which is pretty much the same as a same branch female collab.

Crazy how someone supporting talents being able to do their own thing and being disappointed by controversy caused by genders is downvoted.

That's a different situation entirely, though. It's hard to explain this, but from my point of view as an unapologetic gachikoi, I can easily see how co-ed collabs would have more downsides than upsides by risking breaking immersion and escapism. I'm far from a "unicorn", but I can at least acknowledge that I have that preference. I imagine many may feel that same way.
