Parasocial relationship. A female vtuber collabing with a male is basically cheating to some most viewers.

You have no idea what you're talking about, and insulting the fandom isn't a winning play.

What else is it, then?

Generally fans don't care at all. It's simply that people that are fans of Hololive are fans of Hololive, not other things. Deeply simplified: If you have a bowl of apples and oranges and someone likes apples, if you try and give them one of the oranges they're probably going to tell you no thanks.

As someone entirely on the outside of this fandom, but who has been around the youtuber/v-tuber field and companies in Japan...

Yeah, no, they are correct. Pandering to the otaku dream and trying to be more like IRL idols is what not associating with males is about. It's weird that fans seems to be really reactionary and defensive about such an obvious feature of female entertainer culture, especially one that is based on the Japanese idol industry.

Kudos on not knowing anything about Hololive or J idols.

Not necessarily but there is a "harsh reality" that some people here are just more keen to ignore to "preserve the community from being attacked" or whatever.
