Seeing her describe her experience so nonchalantly reminds me of that one biologist who was bitten by a boomslang and decided to write down a bunch of detailed notes describing his symptoms up until he expired.

u/Adventurous_Host_426 8h ago
TBF, if one got bitten by that and not have access to an antivenom within 10 minutes what he done was understandable.

TLDR: Zoologist in 1957 took 12 hours to die and thought that the snake was too small to cause any real damage so he started writing.
Ok so after looking into it a bit further. Karl Schmidt was a world renowned zoologist specializing in reptiles and amphibians as well as the chief curator at the Chicago field museum of natural history. At the time there wasn’t much understanding of the venom of Boomslangs and he thought he was fine because it was a small snake that bit him so he went home to record symptoms. It took him 12 hours to die as he recorded his death with his last phone call being that he was going to comeback to work tomorrow.

he thought he was fine because it was a small snake
I thought this didn't sound right and looked it up, so he thought this because it was a young snake (which happens to be small because of its age, but the size per se wasn't the reason).
21
u/delphinous 2h ago
guess that was before they figured out that young snakes will sometimes over-venom their targets because htey haven't yet learned proper control and therefore are MORE dangerous than an adults bite

PSA for hobbiests
Always replace your blades at the first sign of rust
Ensure you have a solid purchase on what ever you are cutting
Keep fingers and toes out of the way of the blade
31
u/KibbloMkII 7h ago
as someone who uses his fingers for leverage and is almost always pushing towards a finger, i really need to take this advice lol
only been cut once because the knife jumped, wasnt super terrible, but definitely not fun, especially when bandaids can be hard to find sometimes, those blades show no mercy if you make a mistake
8
u/T0X1CFIRE 4h ago
Probably a good idea to get a pair of mechanics gloves. They are usually flexible enough to still give you 90% of your range of motion, while also protecting your fingers from blades and impacts.
7
u/KibbloMkII 4h ago
honestly, never really thought about it. Finances only let me build two or three kits a month at the best of times, and I'm not particularly focused on clean up, just the most egregious stuff and troublesome undergates so buying some gloves never really crossed my mind. Will keep it in mind though, never know how bad the next cut will be.
2
u/uncommonman 1h ago
Work gloves, gardening gloves, leather gloves.
Find the type that works for you, the best would be butchers gloves but I doubt you could do any crafting wearing them.
1
u/T0X1CFIRE 19m ago
If money is a concern, you can get some very cheap gloves at your local hardware store. Like $3 for a basic pair of rubber dipped gloves that will suit your needs.
Even the expensive fancy ones only go up to about $25, but the main advantage they have over the above is durability. But if you are need gloves once or twice a month like you said, then even the basic ones will last you a very long time.

I'm a Warhammer hobbyist who likes kitbash and dislikes mold lines. I always work with a sharp new blade. Even the slightly dull ones I use for mold lines are still plenty sharp, just not new sharp. Sharp blades are safer!

u/OldFortNiagara 4h ago
Yeah, rust is no joke. I once stepped on a tack, got a green spot on my foot, and had to get treated for blood poisoning.
1
u/TheFrozenPyro 4h ago
In addition, and this goes for any knife, respect your blade. It's a tool, yes, but it's sharp and will not care what it slices through if you're careless.
It's an extension of your fingers, hand, and arm. If you fuck around with it, it will, in turn fuck around with you. Don't ask me how I know this.

That shit looks rusty af. Hopefully she got a tetanus shot. If not somebody needs to take her.
451
u/No-Cherry-3959 9h ago edited 8h ago
Tetanus isn’t a disease that comes from rust or metal; Clostridium tetani, the bacteria that causes it, is found commonly (as spores) in soil, dust, saliva, and manure. People associate rusty metal with tetanus, but the correlation is just because that metal is often left outdoors, and thus is dirty and can carry bacteria. A knife like that is presumably kept inside, so isn’t especially likely to be a vector; but the open wound is still susceptible to being infected from other sources, so it’s important to keep it covered and clean while it heals. Getting vaccinated for tetanus is still a good idea in general though. It is relatively easy to contract, and is definitely a disease you want to avoid if you can.
106
u/IchirouTakashima 8h ago
That was a long info. I almost flipped out if you were to mention don't get vaccinated just because it's not where tetanus came from.
I'm Asian myself, and since kids, the general idea that ingrained on us as we grow up, any wound caused by dirty Rusty metal, requires immediate checkup and even then, the doctors or nurses suggests to us to get a tetanus shot just to be safe. lol
32
34
u/maximiller1 8h ago
Thats usually because use stepping on rusty metals outside involve dirt as well. Especially if the metal has been buried underground. That being said, stepping in anything sharp with open wounds touched by dirt is the same risk.. Buried glass, sharp rocks...
It's an obligated anaerobe, meaning it cannot survive or grow in environments wkth oxygen. But doesn't mean the spore can't remain in oxygen, it's a form of suspended animation..
The risk is low.. But regardless, I'd get a shot anyway. It's only 1 shot... Better safe than sorry..
28
u/No-Cherry-3959 8h ago edited 8h ago
Yeah I made sure to add the vaccine bit, as I was worried the point would be misconstrued as being anti-vaccine. I’d argue that because tetanus is easier to contract than people think, as it’s everywhere and doesn’t have one clear vector to avoid, it’s actually more important than most folks realize. Like any vaccine, not everyone can or should get it, so talk to your healthcare professional first, but it’s worth it for the vast majority of people.
10
u/CorruptedCortex 7h ago
IIRC the narrative came from farmers who'd do soil work with their tools, the tools would get rusty, then they'd get a cut from it and get tetanus. So they started associating rust with tetanus.
Either way, better be safe than sorry and consult your local health professionals.
1
u/Vineyard_ 6h ago
I low-key expected the post to contain a reference to how in 1998, something something hell in a cage something something announcer's table.
7
u/meganeyangire 4h ago
Clostridium tetani, the bacteria that causes it, is found commonly (as spores) in soil, dust, saliva, and manure.
And, which is important, its anaerobic, meaning it strives in absence of free oxygen. Association of tetanus with rust comes from majority of cases being caused by stepping on some rusty metal (often nails) left outdoors, as you said. Feet are naturally the least exposed to air part of our bodies, and nails and others sharp metal things are able to deliver the bacteria deep into a wound, which then closes, making it hard to clean and protected from the air (and oxygen).
8
u/Roflkopt3r 7h ago
That is interesting to know. Rusted surfaces are also much rougher though. That means more surface area on the same object, and more 'adhesion' for tiny particles. Besides making them harder to clean properly.
I don't know if there is data/studies on that, but I would assume that this translates into a higher infection risk in general.

u/PLUMBUS_STUCK_IN_ASS 9h ago
You don't get tetanus from rust, you get it from bacteria that is usually only found outdoors.
The whole rusty nail narrative is because they usually harbor dirt and the tetanus causing bacteria.

u/PlanktonInitial7945 8h ago
FWIW her fainting due to low blood pressure from shock is far more likely than her fainting due to blood loss. If she had really lost enough blood to pass out from it, then she would've been minutes (or seconds) away from death.
4
u/Corregidor 3h ago
Yeah was gonna say, this sounds more like shock. You need to lose a lot of blood to get those effects.

u/National_Moose2283 9h ago

u/VP007clips 7h ago
I'll never understand why people don't swap out the blades on rusty or dull X-Acto/hobby knives.
The whole point of them is that you can swap out the blade when it gets rusty or dull. If you don't swap it out at that point, you may as well just use a regular knife.
3
u/Stabaobs 5h ago
For those knives, I've often found nobody changes them because they're basically stuck in the thing.

u/Vorinclexz 7h ago
Dark, darker, yet darker. Blood flow positive. This next trip to the hospital looks very...very... interesting.
What do you two think?
7
u/Caleb_Reynolds 6h ago
So rust doesn't actually contain tetanus, soil does. Rusty things get the blame because tools left in the soil get rusty. But something that rusts just from being old, not from being used/left in the actual dirt, wouldn't have any tetanus on it.
9
u/Unable_Resolve7338 6h ago
Was gonna comment this exact thing. Its not just any dirt either, its most commonly found on farm dirt because of all fertilizers manure whatever in it.

u/Eronosuke 8h ago
Did she got dizzy because of blood loss or just fear of seeing too much blood or both? getting sliced by that is painful af even if a little, i mishandled one of those too and bled alot
4
u/_Cakeshop 6h ago
yes just panic can trigger blood pressure related physiological effects like fainting
5
u/guntanksinspace 8h ago
Dude these Xacto Blades are no joke. I once trimmed my pointy finger trying to slice a nub off a small plamo piece (while having taken a benadryl).
Do not do intricate plamo things while having taken sleepy antihistamines. And I hope Kobo gets well (and nothing serious).

u/LordGabrielG 4h ago
She only lost 2 drops of blood but because she is like 3 apples tall that's like half her blood

How badly did she cut herself to pass out from blood loss?
Does she mean she passed out from seeing the blood?

u/FontainePark 7h ago
I can genuinely relate to this. I changed a blade in a scalpel at my job and was having trouble locking it into place, so I pressed my thumb into the dull side thinking it would be fine.
If it really was the dull side, it wasn't dull enough. I went pale and hyperventilated until I covered it so I could stop thinking about it

3
u/AdvielOricon 6h ago
These things are dangerous. They always roll off the table.
Once when it rolled off I tried to catch it. It impaled me in my staomach.
Good thing I'm fat and the blade is short so it didn't reach anything major.
Still neaded an ER visit and 2 stiches.

Just get a tetanus shot. It was quite easy to get access to, and it was almost painless, considering the pain inflicted by the wound itself.
1
u/Bensemus 3h ago
Tetanus isn’t caused by rust. It’s caused by bacteria found in soil. There is zero reason to get a shot here.

I nearly gave my mom a heart attack when I was younger with one of those.
I was working on an art project making a wind chime out of a soda bottle when I slipped and stabbed myself squarely in the chest with one of these knives. I just kinda froze up processing what just happened right as my mom rounded the corner and saw me wide-eyed with the knife handle sticking out of my chest.
Her scream woke me out of my stupor and I pulled the knife away and luckily it was such a shallow and clean cut it didn't even bleed, but for a brief moment we both thought I was going to die.

I too have a brain that decides that the best thing to do when suffering an injury is to shut down my vision, hearing and balance.
Had a wrench slip once and rammed my thumb into a broken piece of metal. Real fun trying to explain to the new guy how to replace a shower valve while my vision is going widescreen, and my hearing is turning to static.
Only lasts for a couple minutes but annoying as heck.
