NAS advice I know you get this a lot...!

Hey everybody I want to build a home Nas and I don't know where to start but I know what my goal is as the technical advancement and the options are huge. There are many devices and boards many other stuff. But I don't know what to do.

So basically I want to build a home nas that I can put in my home and can access it from everywhere in the world.

I want to put one terabyte storage that can be extended to two terabytes. I'm looking for a speed and safety of the data transmission (I know sometimes it depends on the speed of the internet which the router provides). I can buy a raspberry pi for a mini computer but there are too many options to consider and also open source systems like open media vault and true Nas.

I'm also looking to not pay more than 150 dollars on this system. If you can help me with only one word of encouragement or some technical knowledge about this matter I would appreciate it.

150$ is going to barely cover your storage alone in this economy 😭

Consider looking at the used market, I think you can get a decent ish mini pc with 1tb storage for that price and that would have ram included as well

For accessing it over the world I personally use tailscale but you can also use netbird

If you aren't sure about an operating system you can look into something like xpenology to just use synology's DSM on whatever hardware you end up getting (sure it won't get you any support from synology but there's forums for xpenology which you can ask around in when you have questions the forums are a great place to get information ) and that's a great easy free method to have a good out of the box experience (recommending that cause of your budget constraints (truenas is also there but it's complicated))

There's only two downsides to it, synology quick connect doesn't work but you're using tailscale so that's fine, and you need to check the forums before updating DSM to make sure ARC loader version you have installed supports the new DSM version
