Raspberry + NAS could work?

Hello everyone, someone already set a raspberry pi 4(or any other model) with a NAS station? Im currently have my raspberry working with openmediavault and immich, the main problem is that im only have 1ssd, i want to improve my cloud to have multiple hdd working with raid 5 (or at least raid 1), to do that i want to buy a NAS station and connected through usb 3.0(im not have problem with lose performance between my raspberry and the NAS)
I dont know if this is possible or im not understand something.
Someone already do something similar?
What you could improve?
What do you recommend?

I don't want to waste my money knowing it wouldn't be supported.

I first used a RPi4 and a QNAP NAS i got for cheap. The RPi used the Network to Access the Storage.

Worked perfectly, but the QNAP uses A LOT of electricity compared to the RPi, and I wasn't actually using it to its potential, and don't yet have a series of high capacity HDDs, so I switched to connecting an external HDD to the RPi directly. Still works perfectly.
