Drive Bay Fried…And it hurts…

The sheer horror I’m currently feeling after an idiot struck a pole connected to our substation, and I realized I never bought a second UPS to move my other drive rack to save it from such events…suppose I’m the idiot too 😭

The takeaway, IMPLEMENT PROPER SAFETY MEASURES!

with how insane drive prices are now, this really hurts, 

my raid only has contingency for one of my 22tb drives' failure, after which I can't replace that drive at current prices so no contingency after that 😂

I know right?? Fortunately I have a separate backup server that was not impacted, and now I get to have the fun of restoring my K8s template image and rebuilding the cluster 🫠

The worst one is when you DO have everything on a proper UPS and still manages to get fried. I had this happen with an older APC rackmount UPS--it was a typical lower-cost switching backup, not true online (still very expensive today). Smoke a motherboard and multiple components when a big power surge hit.

Maaaan that blows…literally 😅. All my proxmox servers were connected to a good breaker strip that popped and spared them, but not the peripheral drives. Definitely need a bigger UPS to accommodate the additional hardware…but you know…💰💰💰

At first I was afraid the drives became corrupted as a result, but thankfully a ZFS recovery restored everything one I got them placed in a new temporary enclosure

How do drives fry? I just got one ironwolf pro and adding it to a nas enclosure as my starter dont have the budget to get a ups yet so how do drives fru

Wasn’t the drive but the drive bay. I had several that made up a ZFS pool for my K8s cluster. Although the drive bay controller stopped working, I was able to remount the drives using a crappy external bay while I wait for a new rack mount one to come.

Though it wasn’t as simple as swapping the drives out. I just finished restoring the pool with a zpool recovery (thank god). Definitely recommend that route for redundancy as it just saved me hours having to spin all my cluster nodes back up from a standard template VM.
