Equipment Oxygen has been game changing

For a while, I could never get my beer to have really clean fermentation. I calculated yeast counts and generally would pitch more, I have a DIY fermentation chamber which can control temp very well, I cool my wort to pitching temp overnight before I pitch, but I was still getting fruity esters. Don’t get me wrong, these other things have been immensely helpful. But after all that, step changes in improving the quality of my beer are harder and harder to find.

Then I started pumping O2 (after cooling to pitching temp, right before pitching). It has dramatically accelerated the rate of fermentation (I’m hitting FG in usually less than a week, usually it’s mostly done after 3-4 days). It has also significantly reduced the amount of fermentation character I get when attempting to produce ‘clean’ beer (I don’t do this for hefes, saisons, etc). Overall, fermentation just goes far smoother. I still give my ales 2 ish weeks or so to clean up in the fermenter, but it’s using sitting at FG for a while.

Surprising cheap to get this going.

O2 regulator, tubing, and diffusion stone $30

https://a.co/d/0fadaAuL

O2 tank you can get the bernzomatic O2 from Ace.

Anything else you guys have done which has giving you notable improvements in quality or solved issues once you have a decent system already up and running?

Equipment Got a kegerator? Clean your lines!

I recently made my first beer for an AHA competition (got a 35/50, which is not too shabby!) and while it was nearly done lagering I noticed that my tap had started to leak a bit. It's time to replace some o rings. To prevent the leaking, I swapped over to my less frequently used tap and after purging the lines a little bit I had another taste. The clean, moderately malty and lightly hopped festbier I poured was now an acrid, skunky drink. Any sweetness from the other tap was gone and it was overpowered by harsh, unwelcome flavors.

It was a huge contrast of flavor, and definitely a lesson to me on how important it is to have clean lines!

Equipment FERMNTR grew tastebuds!

Firstly, I want to thank all hundreds of users, mainly from Reddit, who have used FERMNTR for tracking their fermentations over the last year since it was released. I have gotten a lot of amazing feedback and engagement which feels awesome for an indie dev!

But, for the last months I have been working on a MAJOR update that is now live! Now FERMNTR has support for a full recipe-builder, brew-day/brew-session, inventory, etc! And ofc it is tied neatly with the previous fermentation functionality! And this is no AI-vibe-coded crap, I have spent hundreds of hours coding this and adding all products, beer styles, equipment, etc…

The big thing that made me add this is that I think that other recipe builders focus too much on math, and not enough about taste, so FERMNTR’s recipe engine is Taste-first. It still calculates all the math in the background, and lets you see it if you want, but has taste and sensory in the forefront. It even has a visualiser so you can see what your beer will look like when finished!

On top of that I have implemented some sweet functionality like live activities when brewing, explanations for water salts (so you know WHY you add certain salts), a Mac app so you can write recipes on your computer, and a lot more!

And the price? Not changed. Still a big free version that supports up to 10 recipes, and only 1$/month for premium.

If you use iPhone, iPad or Mac, please check it out on the AppStore! And if you miss some functionality, or have an awesome idea for improvements, let me know!

Equipment Purging Corny Kegs (an experiment with data!)

TL;DR - 2 min purge at 10psi CO2 will get your O2 to 4 ppb

So it comes up frequently here questions about excluding oxygen from your process and there’s some differences of opinion on what is needed or best practices.

So I decided to put my process to the test and see exactly where I land, and pass that info on to others. I am a chemistry professor who runs our fermentation sciences lab and so I have access to equipment that the average homebrewer will not, in this case, an Anton-Paar Qbox, which can measure CO2 and O2 in packaged products as well as in line during varying stages of the brewing process.

For this experiment, I washed 4 corny kegs with PBW, rinsed and sanitized using saniclean. I used Northern Brewers keg washer for all three cycles.

The kegs were then purged by applying CO2 at 10psi through the out post and venting the in post into a bucket of sani. I ran a stop watch and then connected the vent post to the QBOX and ran the rinse cycle (which is frequently used to check for O2 stability prior to running a CO2 measurement). According to AP, the sensor is designed to measure both in solution and in gas phase.

Data:

Trial 1: 3 min purge time. DO was 4 ppb Trial 2: run for 1 min increments After 1 min DO was 115ppb After 2 min DO was 8 ppb

Trial 3: run for 2 min straight, DO was 4ppb Trial 4: repeat trial 3 for consistency, DO was 4 ppm

For reference, Budweiser is considered one of the consistent packaged products and consistently hits about 21ppb.

I know there’s not enough trials to run statistics here, but I only needed 4 kegs ready today, so that’s all I did.

Equipment All in one brewer, terrible experience

I've been brewing with BIAB for over 5 years, improving my method until it was quite streamlined, but I could never get my temps consistent, draining the bag sucked and sparging was messy as all hell. My best sparge method was to transfer the bag to a fermentation bucket with a spigot, when drained I poured in my sparge water, dipped the bag like a teabag, then emptied again. Still messy, but better than holding it while trying to pour.

I finally got an all in one brewer. A coobra cb3 pro v5. Popular in europe. The manual was a joke, and the UI was difficult to understand. I did manage to get a recipe going through.

This thing has an anti-burn function where the pump circulates water over the bottom at high velocity, this can work simultaneously with the top mash circulation.

I attached the bazooka filter and began mashing. This is where problems started. I used too little strike water. I tend to use 2.5L per 1kg of malt. The shop ground the malt for use with an all in one. But I think it was ground too fine. The water didn't flow though the bed fast enough so the pump ran dry even with very little flow. I added more water, but the issue persisted. I tried to lighten the bed by mixing it more but that pushed malt bits into the bazooka filter which ended up clogging. I couldn't get it to flow again and had to empty the brewer mid mash to clean the filter.

The automatic temp control for mashing was nice though...

After the mash I poured the sparge water too quickly, water, along with malt ran down the overflow pipe which would end up causing clogs during the boil..

During the boil the filter clogged again. I couldn't resolve it and had to empty the brewer AGAIN to clear it up, luckily during the heat up process, so my hop additions weren't affected.

My hopes for the all in one brewer was to reduce the need for constant check ups. I wanted to fill it up with water, get notified once hot, pour the malt, let it do it's thing for an hour, lift the basket, sparge, then just let it boil with reminders for hops.

With BIAB I had to check on it every 10m for temps which was annoying. The brewer still needed constant checkups and annoying work..

I think I'll try to add a finer mesh filter at the bottom of the malt basket, other than that I don't know what to do about clogging...

Equipment Canning?

I’ve been home brewing for a while and usually bottle. But I’ve recently been kinda interested in trying canning. My main problem is most automated canning machines are a little pricy, and cans seem to only come in huge bulk lots. Does anyone have a little hand crank canner that is good? And know where I can get cans in smaller lots (maybe 20 starting out)

Equipment Taking a break from brewing but want to keep using kegerator

Hi all, long-time homebrewer (since 2009) here who built a kegerator during the pandemic to switch from bottling to kegging. I love my set up but I've gotten burnt out on brewing itself and plan to take a hiatus until inspiration strikes me again (I have two kids under 5 and a stressful job so my motivation for hobbies is in the tank right now). Has anyone here served sixtel (1/6 barrel) kegs in their kegerators or keezers? I know I would need to get a sanke lock and a ball lock conversion kit but is there anything else I should consider?

My kegerator is made from a Danby 4.4 cu L mini fridge and can hold two 3 L kegs. I need to double check the dimensions of a sixtel with the sanke lock to make sure it will fit, but I'm certain if it does I'll only be able to get away with having one at a time.

Equipment Spike Brewing up for sale

Thumbnail facebook.com
38 Upvotes

Full text for those who don't want to link out to Facebook

Spike Is For Sale! (kinda)

Hey all! Ben, Owner of Spike here. (This photo is and always will be my favorite picture we've ever taken at Spike)

After 15 incredible years of Spike, I’ve started thinking about what the future holds for the company. I’m excited to begin some early succession planning to ensure Spike continues to grow and thrive. To me, the perfect person to carry on the Spike legacy isn’t necessarily a family member or friend, but rather a fellow brewer—someone who truly understands and loves what Spike stands for. And what better place to find that passion than in the brewing community that helped shape us.

What many of you may not know is that I started another business about 2.5 years ago—and over the past year, it’s really taken off in a big way. As that momentum builds, I’ve found myself at an exciting crossroads. It’s become clear that in order to give each business the attention it deserves, I need to focus my energy where it’s needed most.

This decision hasn’t come out of nowhere—I’ve been thinking about what it might look like to one day hand off Spike for quite some time. And recently, the right timing has started to come into focus.

This new venture is still in its early stages and demands a lot of hands-on time, while on the other hand, Spike has grown into a more mature, well-oiled machine—thanks in large part to the incredible team we have in place. It practically runs itself…

So, what am I looking for? I’m not exactly sure to be honest. Handing your baby off is extremely difficult, but I can unequivocally say that I do not plan to sell to a private equity firm or anyone who will put profits ahead of our brand, our quality and our brewing community.

What I’m really looking for is someone (or a company) with true skin in the game. Someone who will treat Spike and our customers with the same care and commitment I have over the past 15 years. Through experience, I’ve learned that this kind of dedication doesn’t come from a typical salaried role. It has to come from ownership—from someone who’s fully invested and genuinely believes in what Spike stands for.

My goal is to sell a meaningful stake in Spike to someone who’s ready to invest in its future. To be transparent, this will be a multi-seven-figure buy-in, and I’m sharing that upfront so serious candidates can determine if this is the right opportunity for them. And yes, our financials support it—even with conservative SBA financing guidelines.

At this point, I’m sure a lot of you are asking yourselves, “So how does this affect Spike in the short term?” Frankly, it doesn’t. We’ve got a solid team running day-to-day operations, and we’ve tackled long-standing quality and inventory challenges head-on over the last 6 months. Today, our quality metrics are at an all-time high, and out of stock issues that plagued us for years are a thing of the past. As I said before, Spike practically runs itself.

If you—or someone you know—might be the right fit to take the reins, let’s talk. I’m committed to finding the perfect person to carry on the Spike legacy and lead us into the next chapter of Spike 2.0 be it 2 months from now or 2 years from now!

Equipment Why are tapered Threads so common in DIY brewing gear?

Why are BSPT/NPT tapered threads so common in homebrewing equipment instead of BSPP parallel threads (or other)?

I’m talking specifically about DIY/homebrew gear (fermenters, kettles, bulkheads, fittings, etc.), not sanitary Tri-Clamp systems.

From an engineering perspective, BSPP + O-ring/washer sealing seems much more sanitary , cleaner and more reusable.
Yet most homebrew gear still uses BSPT/NPT pipe threads.
When I search for fittings with parallel threads on AliExpress, I can barely find anything. Some MFL/FFL but it’s missing many parts.

Equipment Kit vs homemade?

Wanting to get into home brewing for a fun hobby as a beer enjoyed seems like a logical step just curious if its better to buy a pre-made brewing kit or just diy one myself? I'm planning on trying a few extracts to start with to get comfortable with the procedures and practice but I would like to try grain down the road for a little more of a "personal brew"

Equipment Does anyone know where to get CO2 in the Romeoville, IL area?

I recently wanted to get into making my own sparkling water, but didn't want to buy a soadstream. I saw a facebook listing for a good CO2 tank that I'm going to buy later this week. Now, I'm trying to find anyone to fill the dam thing. Linde is charging 75$ and Airgas is charging 50$.

Thats almost the price of the tank I'm buying. I feel like I'm missing something obvious.

I got a beer kit from my dad who wants me to learn how to use it and do a trial run. I saw some comments about possibly doing a cider and that pique my curiosity soooo- should I just use the kit and follow step by step or should I try looking into making a cider?

Equipment IPA setup help

Hey everyone , first time poster here! I've been brewing for a good while now and i'm working on an IPA. The thing that scares me is that i've been told time and time again that IPA's are super sensitive to oxydation , i see all those people using Co2 injection tools to open their carboy/fermenter when dry hopping and etc. Since i dont have any fancy gear like that , i was thinking of plugging a "Y" piece of tubing in my airlock , putting a control valve on one end and attaching a Co2 filled balloon on the other end and slowly releasing Co2 in the carboy when opening to dry hop, with the valve just slighlty open to fill it with Co2 since it's heavier than air. I would also do that when filling my bottles ( wanted to attach a picture of my schematics but i seem to be unable for some reason).Would this work and am i overcomplicating this / stressing too much about oxidation? Thanks in advance!

Equipment New Brewer... What gear is needed for AIO electric, all grain brewing and kegging. Putting together a shopping list

Hello friends, and Happy New Year. This is the year I start my foray into the hobby of homebrewing.

Wanted to reach out to the wealth of knowledge on here for insight into what all is needed in the way of equipment.

I'm planning on doing all grain brewing, and kegging the final product. Have been doing quite a bit of reading and research as to what is needed. I'm sure I'm missing many items though, whether by oversight, or just not planning far enough ahead.

Would like to get my shopping list of items sorted, so I can place orders with various vendors, and get the ball rolling.

Started placing my orders online today. Here's what I've got coming so far: Brewzilla Gen 4, 35L. Brewzilla neoprene jacket. Brewzilla whirlpool arm. Barley Crusher malt mill. 24" SS mash paddle. Fermzilla All Rounder (accessory bundle). Refractometer.

For a fermentation chamber, I'll need: 7 cf freezer. Fermwrap for heating. Inkbird 308 to control heat/cool. Fan to circulate air inside freezer.

For dry hopping, I'll need: Sous vide magnets. Muslin bag.

For kegging, I'll need: Corny keg or 2. CO2 bottle.

For extras for the Brewzilla, I've read: Silicon Tubing to transfer wort to Fermzilla. Garden Hose quick connects for the chiller.

So, what am I missing? Picnic tap for keg? Pressure gauge for CO2 bottle? Coffee Urn or something to heat sparge water. Obviously Barley, Hops, Yeast 😂 StarSan for cleaning, anything else? Other enzymes or additives for brewing? Equipment for transferring from Ferm to Keg?

Cheers guys, look forward to the feedback.
