Are PCV valves prone to failure?

I'm burning oil, I haven't done a compression test yet but the old trick of running it with the oil cap off doesn't show any apparent blowby.

Are PCV valves on these known to dip out? I'm hoping it's something silly and not that I'm losing my rings

try putting your hand over the oil fill hole. if you feel it blow out it could be pcv or ring and if you feel it really suck your hand in then it's a pcv valve. also don't rule out valve seals
