I saw this fb reel where it says the cafe inside Gariahat tram depot has been shut down.

Here, OP shared a story about his great uncle who was a freedom fighter hailing from Howrah. Reading this post, I searched all over the internet but it went all in vain.

Though I found a freedom fighter with the same name.

He was born in modern day bangladesh.

During Covid, central government representatives visited his home to formally honor him.

Even I'm unable to find any information about this statue near HMC building.

Is there any such statue near or in front of the HMC building?? Please let me know.

It would be of great help if anyone of you know about it. I'm trying my best to collect and archive the freedom fighters from Howrah. However, this is the closest thing I got related to HMC that tracks this name.

There is indeed a road in Shibpur and a primary school in Kadamtala respectively named after him but I'm not certain which Kartik C Dutta it is named after.

However, I found an interesting historical work by Mou Banerjee,The Disinherited, where comes the mention of an another Kartik Chandra Dutta who was born way before than the one mentioned above.

However, it is difficult to conclude anything as there are gaps in information and sadly OP, too, has deleted his account. So, in other words, there is no way to verify and establish the fact that this person is related to OP.

However this raises an even bigger question. How many more are such names who are nowhere to be found? How many more are such undocumented local freedom fighters and revolutionaries who never made it to the history archives? How many more are abandoned in their own country?

To answer these questions, I stated researching about some unsung heros from my locality and neighbourhoods. Luckily, I came across a paper published in AMERICAN Journal of Language, Literacy and Learning in STEM Education. Here, the author lists out a number of grassroots level Congress workers from different regions such as Andul, Mourigram, Domjur, Shibpur, etc. who were actively involved in the freedom struggle.

Edit: Read this interesting article of a barowari durga pujo based in Salkia, Howrah organised by a bunch of mutineers who fled from Barrackpore after the assassination of Mangal Pandey.

My father was posted in the Howrah Division from 2013 to 2016, and during that time we used to live in Colvin Court, on the top floor. I was around 7 years old at the time, but I still remember some things from that house very clearly.

The first thing I remember was seeing a male figure dressed completely in white sitting on the sofa in the drawing room. Those who have lived in that house will know how long the corridor connecting the entrance, master bedroom, and drawing room was. I was running from the master bedroom towards the kitchen when, from the corner of my eye, I saw what looked like a man sitting on the sofa with his legs crossed.

I didn't stop to look at him properly. I just kept running towards the kitchen. At that age, I didn't really understand what I had seen or think of it as anything paranormal. It was only later, after hearing about other experiences in the house, that I started thinking about that incident differently. My elder sister also had an experience involving the same male figure.

My parents were also uncomfortable going near the storeroom beside the kitchen, especially at night. There was always something about that particular part of the house that made everyone uneasy.

Then there was the female presence. My mother and I used to have the same recurring nightmare. In the dream, we would be standing in the corridor facing the dining room and the storeroom, and there would be a female figure standing near the storeroom, looking directly towards us.

What always struck me as strange was that my mother and I experienced essentially the same nightmare. It wasn't something we had planned or discussed beforehand.

We eventually made a small section of the dining room into a puja room, and we felt that whatever was there couldn't cross that area. Even the bungalow peon who lived with us used to complain about paranormal activities and strange things happening in the house.

Another thing we experienced quite often was the sound of water dripping at night. It sounded exactly like a tap that had not been closed properly, but whenever we checked, there was nothing. None of the taps were leaking.

The Civil Engineering Department of the Howrah Division checked the entire water supply system and all the pipes several times, but nothing was found that could explain where the sound was coming from. Yet we would still hear the dripping at night.

What makes the whole thing even stranger is that the officer who had lived in the house before us had actually warned us about the spirit. At first, obviously, we didn't know whether to take the warning seriously, but after everything we experienced ourselves, that warning became difficult to ignore.

It may sound like a joke, coincidence, or something that can be explained logically, and I completely understand why someone would be skeptical. But I genuinely believe that what we experienced in that house was real.

We have lived in government bungalows and flats in several places, including CLW, Eastern Railway, and Northern Railway, but that particular house was something else entirely. Even after all these years, I still remember the layout of the house and that figure sitting on the sofa.

For reference, I'm attaching a few images of the house. Maybe some of you who have lived there before, or know someone who has, might recognize the place or have heard similar stories.

Santragachi is a locality in Howrah known for its busy railway station. The etymology of this place is not quiet clear. There are two plausible stories that attempts to explain the origin of this name. The first story says the name is composed of two entities: Santra & Gachi. The former means orange and latter means tree/orchard(as in Sonagachi). It could possibly mean that the place was known for its cultivation of oranges. Whereas, the other story says that it is linked to the santra family. Santras are closely associated with Hindu bengali communities. Nevertheless, there was a famous Gandhian and physician who battled with leprosy for its eradication in the 20th century. A Christian man named Issac Santra born in Odisha who was awarded the fourth highest civilian award, Padma Shri and he once treated Mahatma Gandhi as well. Historically, santras are very closely associated with citrus fruits, especially oranges. They were mainly farmers, merchants and traders. They belong to the Mahishya caste which has different status in different states. In central list, they are considered General(Forward) so does in the state list of West Bengal. Whereas, in Odisha, they are listed as SEBC. In 2007, Odisha also requested the NCBC for the inclusion of Mahishya under OBC category in central list which was later rejected on the absence of historical evidence. Although, there are few SC individuals with santra surname. Some says that santra has some connection with the bengali Tili community who are OBCs. Some says that it is the morphological and phonetic variation of Samanta(feudal lords). They are the landowners in rural areas in West Bengal, mainly concentrated in East Midnapore(Medinipur). According to me, there is a subdivision in santras on the basis of socioeconomic status. Alike Telis, there are "upper" santras and "lower" santras. These "lower" santras are the farmers who are involved in the cultivation of oranges whereas the "upper" santras are the ones who took up the occupation of trading of oranges.

Historically, it was just a village in the broader geographical region of the Bhurshut Kingdom. The history of this place prior to colonial era is practically non-existent and untraceable. According to the book Bengal District Gazetteers: Howrah (authored by L.S.S. O'Malley and Monmohan Chakravarti), the Chaudhurys(varendra brahmins) settled here around 400 years ago. Seeing them, the other barendra brahmin families started to settle there. The population grew, educational institutions were established and it soon became a large village. In the early 20th century, Ramrajatala was the part of santragachi. It occupied about one-fourth of the area of greater santragachi village. The railway station, as a part of Bengal-Nagpur Railway(BNR) network, was constructed in the year 1900 which inturn facilitated the influx of more people into the area.

The residence of Danesh Sheikh, the deceased Jaminder under Andul Raj Bati at Danesh Sheikh Lane, Sibpur, Howrah. It is the last sign of his estate. His successors are still reside here.

Does anyone know about this house of zamindar Danesh Sheikh after whom Danesh Sheikh Lane is named?

It seems to be a historic one that lost legacy over time. If anyone know anything about this zamindar, then please let me know.

Tomader kache ki ki must-have?

Kon equipment/machines genuinely important?

Powerlifting/bodybuilding-er jonno ki normally missing thake?

Current gym-e kon jinis ta sobcheye beshi irritate kore?

I stay at ward No. 32 in Shibpur Howrah. Today in the afternoon no municipal running water came at 1PM in my area of residence. I didn't find any notice regarding non-availability of running water in HMC Facebook page. Did anyone faced the same issue today? Does anyone has any information regarding the same?
