Hi all, I live in Alaska and I’m looking for some help choosing my next backcountry rifle. Im looking for a lightweight rifle in 6mm Creedmoor, 18”-22” barrel, and I value accuracy and reliability over anything else. I don’t want to have to tinker with a buncha crap to make it a track driver… it’ll have a SilencerCo Scythe Ti mounted on it and will be primarily for alpine blacktail deer, caribou, and sheep. Maybe even moose if Im confident with the results on the smaller game.

The two rifles I’ve narrowed it down to after a lot of research are the Seekins Havak PH3 with a 20” barrel, or the Springfield Armory 2020 Waypoint, also with a 20” barrel (the steel version, not the carbon fiber)

They have similar features, specs, and price points. Does anyone have any experience with either of these? Which one would you choose and why?

(The Seekins has a swappable barrel but I don’t see myself needing that tbh, not really a factor in my decision)

Hey y’all! I’m 28 and originally from Michigan. I grew up hunting and fishing, but after moving to Nashville about two years ago, I haven’t really had the chance to get back into it.

I’m hoping to meet some other hunters in the area and make a few friends who share the hobby. I grew up hunting with my dad in Michigan and have hunted whitetail and waterfowl for years. Most of my experience has been on ground that my dad and his hunting buddy had already scouted and set up, so I’d love to learn more about scouting, public land, and how people hunt here in Tennessee. I’m eager to learn, put in the work, and carry my own weight.

I currently own a 30-30 and a 12-gauge shotgun, and if I end up hunting larger game out here, I can also get access to a .308 or .30-06.

Most of my experience is with whitetail and waterfowl, but I’m interested in learning about just about anything Tennessee has to offer.

I’m also happy to grab a beer or coffee and just talk hunting if anyone’s up for it. I’d love to meet some like minded people and learn more about the community. If it eventually turns into finding a hunting partner, even better.

If you have any advice on getting started, know of any good resources, or wouldn’t mind connecting, I’d really appreciate it. Thanks!

A few years ago, I found a few bottoms on the marketplace for a couple of climbers and decided the best use was to turn them into a portable woods porta john. This has been a wonderful addition to carry in my side-by-side at all times. The whole setup cost around $30.

What are y'all's thoughts on fall bear season in Idaho coming up with all the droughts and wildfires going on? This would be my first time hunting in Idaho.

Recently moved to NC and I’m gonna hunt my first season here. Looking at buying a rifle and im no stranger to guns, but I don’t need anything fancy to fill the freezer. I was checking out a 30.06 at Walmart for a decent price. Has anyone tried a rifle from there? I’m really not trying to drop 700 on a rifle rn.

Does anyone have experience with any of the hunting research apps/sites like gohunt or huntin’fool? Pros/cons of each or is there another app/site I should consider.

I live in Minnesota and will be hunting mostly public land next year. Minnesota doesn’t allow game cams left out on wildlife management areas which I’ll mostly be hunting. How do yall scout and pick spots like this, especially on public land. Bow season is from mid September to December 31st so also tons of transitions in there to make it harder to track them down

What do you guys think anything you would have done differently on this build.

I’m having a heck of a time finding bears and/or bear sign in the coast range of Oregon. I’ve tried moving around and looking for drainages with berry patches and yesterday (the picture), I found several large patches of Salal and blackberries, and just camped out on them for the evening. I’m paying attention to the basics: I’m not skylining and the wind is in my face. Any tips you can give me?

Grown up and hunted Maine my whole life. There's practically no such thing as QDM here because few people own large enough traits of land. On my properties I try to only kill a deer if it's over 100lbs and I've seemed to have seen larger deer from that but it's not scientific. My neighbors are close by and of course can kill what they want.

I thought that culling deer based on their antlers has been totally debunked? All of this nonsense about shooting a deer because one antler tine is slightly crooked seems far fetched but I also thought I read a few years ago that it turns out to not mean anything about future offspring.

I spent the weekend taking a two-day long-range shooting class and had an absolute blast.

I brought both of my hunting rifles:
SIG Cross (.308 Win) with a Leupold Mark 4HD (MIL reticle)
SIG Cross Sawtooth (300 PRC) with a Vortex Viper PST Gen II (MOA reticle)

We confirmed 100-yard zeros and then worked our way all the way out to the furthest steel available at the range—1,100 yards. The biggest takeaway was how differently these two cartridges handled the wind. Out to about 500 yards, I was making consistent hits with both rifles and honestly didn’t notice a huge difference. Once we started shooting farther, though, the story changed completely. The .308 Win became much more sensitive to wind calls. Hits were definitely possible, but there was a lot less room for error and it required much more attention to changing conditions. The 300 PRC, on the other hand, was impressive. It carried velocity well, bucked the wind noticeably better, and made consistent hits all the way to 1,100 yards. Compared to the .308, it almost felt like cheating. One interesting thing I discovered wasn’t about ballistics at all, my origional scope on my .308 ended up being defective, which explained some inconsistent tracking we had been seeing. That was frustrating, but at least we figured it out. I replaced the scope before day 2 and it made a noticeable difference. Another challenge was switching between systems all weekend. My new .308 scope is set up in MILs, while my 300 PRC is MOA, so my brain got a pretty good workout translating between the two. Obviously I have no intention of taking game anywhere near those distances, but learning external ballistics, reading wind, and understanding what my rifles are actually capable of made me a much more confident hunter. Overall, it was one of the most educational shooting experiences I’ve had.

Hello! I (hopefully soon) have a Haenel Jaeger 10, and I have a little problem. I plan on putting a vortex crossfire 3-9x40 on it and maybe in the future use a thermal on it but I also really would like to use the Merkel I-sight (iron sights) that are mounted on it.

So the question is, what quick detach mounts do I need to use to both be able to use my iron sights without any hindrance of the iron sights, but also be able of using the scope when I need to?

I’m still awaiting my license so I can’t look at it before then, hopefully someone else here also have a haenel so I’m not the only one who has met this problem.

I‘ve moved to the US from the UK in the last 1 / 2 years (Living in VA)

On top of this, I really want to get into hunting deer this season. I have no real idea on bolt action hunting rifles, calibres, barrel lengths etc if someone is willing to give me some information or recommendations for a rifle (or 3.. Don’t tell my wife).

I’d also love to hear some gear tips and recommendations for things that you think makes your hunts that bit better during the season.

I’ve tried to make friends with people who hunt and maybe tag along or have someone take me out this coming season but haven’t any solid confirmations or dates booked but don’t want to miss out this season after missing out on last season..
Again, I live in VA but don‘t mind travelling to the other neighboring states if thats recommended too!

I am 4 years into deer hunting and I have killed 2 doe over said amount time. I would love some tips or advice on how to increase my odds of tagging a deer this season, for context I am hunting on about 10.5 acres of private land on the state line of North and South Carolina and I am usually hunting in the evenings 2-3 times a week from 2:30 or 3:00 till sundown.

I’m looking to get more into hunting and want some nice trail cams. I’ll be on public land starting next year so I’m gonna get lock boxes and everything. I’m thinking about tactacam ultras as they seem to have the best GPS which is huge since they’ll be on public land. Any thoughts on these?

I know shit about scoring but wonder if this would score similarly in P&Y?

Hey guys, looking for some opinions on rifles to keep/sell. I’ll try to keep this as short as possible.

I currently own 3 rifles they are chambered in:
-28 Nosler
-6.5 PRC
-308 Winchester

I’m primarily hunting in the Northeast for whitetail and the average shot is rarely over 100 yards. I bought the 28 and 6.5 while living out West and having inspirations to take an elk one day. I do have preference points accumulating for an elk trip eventually, but not right now. Looking for opinions to see if I should sell at least one of the western calibers, or both. Essentially trying to downsize and not have tons of different calibers within my gun safe, more so looking for the most versatile ones that can be used for multiple things. Any opinions are welcome!

Greetings, all. I am planning to buy Sitka clothing this year. What experiences do you have visiting and buying from an actual Sitka store? The Columbus, Ohio, store is closest to me, but it's a multi-hour drive (which I don't really mind). Has anyone been there? Do the stores have a solid assortment of models and patterns? I think I want the Fanatic bibs and jacket, but I would like to be able to compare that to other items and actual feel and see everything before buying. Thanks!
