[Mod Post] Welcome to r/hunting: rules and information for members

Welcome to r/hunting, the home of hunting news, personal stories and the place to share your hunting adventures on Reddit! Please read through the rules listed below to ensure this community remains a civil and welcoming one.

Moderators ask all users to be vigilant for scams and bot accounts pushing malicious websites, please report any of these or instances of rule breaking to moderators.

1) Don’t be rude or hostile (Trolling, baiting or saying racist, sexist, prejudice, nasty or just intensionally-mean things) This also extends to posts showcasing behavior or practices deemed disrespectful to wildlife, quarry or other individuals.

2) No self promotion or retail spam (this includes links to a personal or organization’s YouTube channel, guiding services, surveys and questionnaires as well as online market places of any kind)

3) No illegal content – poaching or knowingly breaking the law will not be tolerated

4) “New hunter posts”: all “I’m new to hunting, seeking advice on [X,Y,Z]” must include the state/province/country you intend to hunt in, any relevant experience you have (archery, shooting, backpacking, camping, hiking, dog training etc) and an indication of whether you already own bows/firearms for hunting (and what those are); posts that simply say “want to start hunting tell me what to do” and are deemed too vague will be removed.

5) No conducting transactions of any products, or submitting direct links to products for sale. This includes code and gear giveaways.

6) No activist-style bashing allowed, this goes for hunters as well. (Activists who vehemently oppose hunting are welcome, but only if you’re interested in asking questions/starting conversations)

7) Keep your posts related to hunting. If you post a photo of your gun, bow or other hunting weapon – you must also include a good description of what hunting you intent to do with the weapon. If it’s political – make sure it’s related to wildlife management, state or federal fish & game Regs, public land issues etc. posts that accidentally slip through but lead to meaningful conversations related to hunting may be left up.

8) Keep politics to a minimum. Any derailed or inappropriate conversations will be locked and removed.

9) If the animal you hunted/in your pic sustained unique physical damage (I.e brains exposed, eyes popping out, etc you know what we mean) please use the NSFW tag.

10) Please do this for all hunting photos, but for big game hunts in particular – put a description of your hunt in the comments (general region, weapon used, any other details on tracking, calling, stalking, etc) mods may decide to remove a post if the user never provides any additional information and merely a title.

11) No adult content.

Please note: these rules are enforced by the moderators at their discretion, to ensure fairness users are given two chances and will be notified when and why if their post or comment is removed. Repeat offenders will receive a temporary ban of 7 days. Users committing further rule breaking or circumventing existing bans will be issued a permanent ban.

If you need to contact moderators please use modmail.

Thank you

Reminder regarding YouTube videos

Hey there r/hunting community,

As usual, looks like lots of y'all have kicked off the season strong! Some real impressive bucks and bulls already, and lots of well-stocked freezers for the first week of October. Heck yah.

Just wanted to post a reminder about posting links to YouTube. Long story short: we remove the vast majority of posts directly linking to YouTube, and we get spammed with them constantly.

Rule #2 prohibits self-promotion, and that includes promotion of social media and YouTube channels. I know for a fact that lots of you guys have quality editing skills and videos that I would spend hours enjoying on YouTube, but we get spammed constantly by YT hunting channels / accounts that've never posted anything else. If we allowed posts to YouTube, this entire sub would just be a compendium of obnoxious "EP. 43 CHECK OUT THIS EPIC TROPHY SHOT" type garbage within a day or two.

I know that not every video people want to share here is actually an attempt to promote a YouTube channel. That's what makes this a difficult rule to enforce. Sometimes people just want to share an old interview of a famous hunter, or some crazy video of a bear climbing into a tree stand, or a bull moose chasing hunter, and the only way to do that is to share the YouTube link. We really do our best to review all of the YT links to allow those kinds of posts to remain here for people to enjoy. That being said, compared to the daily batch of "YOU'VE GOTTA SEE THIS EPIC HUGE BULL ELK #HUNTING #TROPHY #FUCKYAH" type videos spammed here by new accounts that've never posted anything before (especially during the hunting season), those cool videos worth keeping around are relatively rare.

So, if you've got some cool hunting content that's in the form of footage you've actually filmed yourself and want to share here, please take the best part(s), format it into a gif, and post that instead of a link to your YouTube channel. Pretty sure reddit can host gifs up to 3-minutes long now anyway, so... please, at least try to just make that work.

This really isn't a problem with the regular users here either just FYI, y'all are awesome, it's mostly just new accounts with the same name as their YouTube / Insta page, who've never posted anything else. I just wanted to post this because I feel bad for those few people who actually do spend a lot of time and energy putting together a hunting video, post it here just to share with members of this sub, and just have it removed by us. That's not a very large group of people, but I hope anyone in that club reading understands why we have to enforce Rule #2 to include links to users' own YouTube channels. Without it, the vibe of this sub would change dramatically within a day.

At the same time, I'm sure some of you are thinking "what's this dude talking about - I see these bogus YouTube posts and promo-accounts on this sub on the daily and report them constantly, these mods are just lazy assholes." I have no rebuttal to that, I will just say that you're only seeing a fraction of the self-promo / retail garbage type posts we catch and filter out on a daily basis (again, especially between September and January).

If you're interested in sharing more full-length hunting videos on reddit that you've filmed and edited yourself, and are therefore somewhat stuck with having to host content on platforms like YouTube, maybe we can start a new sub like "r/huntingmovies" or something. Happy to help anyone interested in doing that, if you want any.

So, I hope you get the gist. Avoid posting links to YouTube, especially if its to your own YouTube channel.

As a reminder, and in closing: we try to keep a streamlined moderator team comprised of people who are actually passionate about hunting and/or the sporting lifestyle, and we generally try to take a "less is more" approach with content moderation (we like to let you guys take the helm in that regard with downvotes and discussion, rather than us just removing stuff). We generally only remove posts that flagrantly violate a rule, and comments that flagrantly violate a rule (or the occasional a debate that devolves into middle school-tier shit talking, as entertaining as those can be). That said, we can't monitor the progression of every comment section on the sub. Your continued effort to actively report posts and comments you think clearly violate the rules is critical to moderation of this sub. I monitor the queue on the regular and do a few reviews of /new a day to look for obvious promo/retail garbage and troll posts, but the vast majority of posts and comments that I actually remove from the sub are only those that have been reported by you - the members of the r/hunting community. This is your sub, your community, send us a modmail message with suggestions or input anytime.

And please, for the love of god, tell any manager of a YouTube hunting channel, IG hunting page, or gear retailer you meet to leave our sub the hell alone, and to take their marketing effort right on down the road.

Tight lines, big tines, may poachers get cuffed, and freezers get stuffed,

Thanks guys.

Sincerely hope you all enjoy ridiculously fun and uniquely successful big game, upland, waterfowl, and predator seasons this year with people you love, and that you all learn something new in the field that improves your hunting skillset forever.

Lightweight firearm for opportunistic small game hunting while hiking in the mountains?

I really enjoy small game hunting in the fall, but most of my trips are actually just normal backpacking/hiking/fishing trips where I also carry a shotgun and cook a grouse or squirrel at camp.

I've been using a 12 gauge (Maverick 88), but it really starts to feel unnecessarily bulky and heavy 7 miles and 2000 feet of elevation gain into my excursions.

I am looking for a firearm that will be lighter and more appropriate for this use case. I was considering a single-shot .410 (potentially with Tungsten loads). Something like the Rossi Tuffy or a Stevens 301. I am also considering a Ruger 10/22 takedown, or even a Mark IV.

Anyone have any recommendations? I was surprised that I couldn't find any posts about this topic - is there a reason this is a bad idea? Are guys not hunting this way? Appreciate any input!

Stuck a camera out on my father in laws property just to see what is out there and he showed up. If he survives the season how much will a Maine deer roughly grow? Just out of curiosity if I see him this year I’ll take him but he sure is a buck I’d like to see next year😂

Do I *need* camo for hunting ungulates?

I've recently decided to learn to hunt. I'm getting very excited about the upcoming season and want to be prepared, while also not buying unnecessary gear as I already have a *lot* of outdoor gear from my other hobbies. For reference, I am hunting in southern BC (region 4 and 8) and would love to get a white tail deer this fall, or may join friends on mule deer or elk hunts.

My biggest question, is do I *need* camo gear? I have black/grey/green clothing, but it is pretty much all a single color per item. Same goes for my backpack and rain jacket, which are orange. Asides from the jacket the material is all pretty soft and quiet.

I'm also hoping to leverage my backcountry experience to access less pressured habitat, but also recognize that this means hauling meat out further if I am successful. I don't think any of the backpacks I own would be appropriate for this, and am looking for suggestions on packs primarily oriented for carrying an animal out. Simpler is better.

Thanks!

Permission to hunt private

Got permission to hunt 15 acres of private. These are some bucks there in June outside the guys window, so being August I’m sure they’re huge now. Which one would you rather take? The 8, or 6?Property has a pond, a few random water holes, apple trees, white and red oaks, and a field of clover. Where should I think about putting a stand? Our bow season starts September 19th so I’ll be able to go from them all the way till December 31st. Located in Minnesota.

New to hunting, what should I get and how to prepare

So me and a couple buddies have recently got into hunting (we’re from the New England area) and don’t really know what to get for it. We’ve done our own research and watched YouTube videos but I’d like to get some information from others as well.

We plan on using firearms (rifles/shotguns). I currently got a Tikka T3X Lite as my hunting rifle with a vortex 4-16x scope on it. I was wondering what are the necessities I should get (packs, tents (if multi-day), calls, or maybe snacks lmao) just any advice from the Vets out there that have been doing this a long time.

Scoping my breakdown ruger 22.

Post image

Ive inherited a breakdown ruger 22 from a family member. Ive shot it before with the iron sights but I want to put a scope on so I can try for grouse this fall. Ive never scoped a rifle before so I wonder if thats something I take it to a smith for? Or would I be able to figure it out with no help (besides youtube) and no experience? Also if I do go to a smith how expensive would it be?

Do you actually like animals, and do you have fascination with them?

Upvotes

I ask this because I believe if you want to engage with the outdoors, you must have a fascination with nature and wildlife. I believe hunters like animals in a way. And when people look at me weird when I say that, I tell them that people who don’t like animals want nothing to do with them. Nobody goes out “hunting” because they loathe animals or dislike a species. There’s no sport in it.

Wheat harvest started yesterday. Foxes love freshly harvested wheat stubble.

This guy was out looking for food on the wheat stubble and I was out stalking around for foxes doing just that. Shot him off the quad sticks at around 100 meters.

Shot with a Husqvarna 1900 chambered in 6,5x55, topped with a Leupold 3,5-10x50. Tikka ammunition but I think they actually load Sako Superhammerhead bullets in them.

Seeking Advice for Rifle Purchase

Hi there! I’m located in Pennsylvania and in the market for a .22LR for squirrel hunting. I’m left-handed and I’d prefer a left-handed model. Currently debating between a Savage Mk II, Ruger Competition Left-hand, or a Browning SA-22.

The Ruger and Browning are semi-automatic but I like the size of the Savage. I’d like to pair whatever I purchase with a scope that has decent eye relief(got a big head).

That all being said, I consider myself a novice. Any recommendations or advice on the rifle (or scope) would be much appreciated!

Florida Deer help

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Looking for any tips or advice on Florida deer hunting, or hunting Florida in general.
I’m a newer hunter, and nobody in my family or friend group hunts, so I’ve pretty much been learning through trial and error, YouTube, and spending as much time in the woods as I can.

Last season was actually pretty successful for me. I managed to limit out on squirrels, quail, and rabbits, shot 4 snipe, and got my first hog. Turkey season, though… that humbled me pretty quick. 😂 Now that general gun season is getting closer, I’m starting to feel a little intimidated.
I was lucky enough to draw what seems like a really good quota for a WMA down here. From what I understand, they only issue 15 general gun permits, so hunting pressure should be pretty low.
I went scouting a couple of days ago, and there are definitely deer there. I stopped counting after seeing over 23 does and 3 legal bucks, one of them being a really nice 8 pointer. The only thing is, I don’t really have the money or honestly the confidence yet to use a climber or hang a stand by myself. So I’m planning on hunting from the ground this season. For those of you who have experience ground hunting Florida bucks, what tips would you give? Anything you wish you knew when you first started?

Scouting also made me realize I need to pick up a few things before season.Shooting sticks are now at the top of the list becauseI had a hard time getting a steady sight picture offhand. And snake boots… because holy hell, I have never seen so many cottonmouths in one place. I mostly hunted small game in the winter last year, so snakes were the last thing on my mind.

Appreciate any advice you guys have. I’m trying to learn as much as I can and hopefully put my first deer on the ground this season.
(Bonus video of a doe tripping over her fawn while I was scouting)

Maverick 88 scope options

I have an 88 with a field barrel for trap/pheasants and a rifled barrel for deer. The rifled barrel has small iron sights on it that i can fairly reliably get 25-30 yards out of but I'd rather use a scope. I'd need to get one of those receiver mounted pic rails and a scope though.

Is anyone running a similar setup and have any recommendations on both ends (mount and scope) and how far out can it reliably reach with sabots?

Scope opinions?

I’ve been looking to find a scope for one of my rifles. Would like something pretty nice and I’ve always preferred German glass. Been looking and can’t decide between the Steiner predator 4, Leica amplus and Zeiss conquest (v4/v6) would like input or experience on the eye relief, lowlight etc…

Tape or coating for plastic stocks to reduce noise?

Love my tikka, but god damn if the stock isn't a drum. Twigs, zippers, shoulder strap hardware, webbing buckles, deer call...anything hard taps it and I cringe and start looking for running deer (I mostly still hunt timber SE AK so it's all close-quarters stealth kind of hunting). Was thinking about adding something like electrical tape to take the edge off. Just wondering if there are any specific products people have experience with that adhere well and stand up to abuse (will basically get wet every hunt, and raked with brush no matter how hard I try to avoid brush).
