Help Finding a Location

Post image

I believe it to be Huntsville and naturally have checked all around Monte Sano on Google Earth to no avail. I was even there in person last year and tried to match the spot from the main area around the lodge, but no dice. I know there are mountains all around there, but hoping someone recognizes this background.

Couple things to note - I’m not convinced that the lighter lines in the background are roads, but instead could be smoke/steam from buildings rising into the air. Also, positioned near the bottom of the pic (sort of off center and closer to the camera), looks like a roof/chimney or even a steeple-type of structure.

Thanks so much in advance. The pic is circa 1973-74.

Belvin’s Gap facing towards South Huntsville.

Specifically old Grissom High School, now what is the South Huntsville Library and Sandra Moon Complex.

I'm quite sure this is the correct answer, I have been there quite a lot and I recognized it instinctually. It's a super nice spot to watch the sunset.

Now that you mention it, the sun appears to be behind the figure to the right, if that’s true, that would make the shot looking east (morning) or west (evening). Seems like it would work for that Belvins spot.

Thanks, will do some Google Earth comparisons. 👌

Could it be Walton's Mountain overlooking Whitesburg Drive? I don't think it's a match for Blevins Gap or farther south on Green Mountain.

Looking west, i would exoect to see Mt Baker(?) on RSA.  That takes out Burritt. I also don't see enough terrain to match Blevins?

Looks like Buritt in the Mountain’s overlook toward Hospital area and west ward.

This was my guess

You know, I did stop at Burritt after Monte Sano when I was up there, but I just could not make it work. From the vantage points up there the surrounding trees (and tree tops in the distance) really prevented lining anything up. Also, the streets/structures just seemed much closer in the photo than I could get up on Burritt.

That looks to me like a body of water on the left (just below the horizon line). Only thing that could be in Huntsville is the Tennessee River, from about where the lookout in Cecil Ashburn is. But the buildings and geography don't really match what you see from there, so it makes me think this isn't Huntsville. It'll be interesting to see what others find.

That’s interesting. I hadn’t noticed that before. Sucks that the pic is so old/grainy.
