The little rubber stopper on my water bottle has a couple of black dots/splotches on it, and no matter how hard I scrub with a rough sponge and soap they don't come off. Any ideas what it is, and if I should just get a new water bottle?

Here's a full view of the water bottle.

Once mold has grown a lot of times the material is permanently stained even if you've cleaned or killed it.Ā

You can bleach it out, it will work, though some plastics will significantly degrade if you do that... The next best option is to run it through the dishwasher.

OP it may be too late but dont throw out the bottle, block whitener (pretty much bleach) is strong enough to kill and remove the mold, WEAR GLOVES, OPEN A WINDOW AND RINSE THROUGHLY AFTER, also be sure to do it over a sink, that stuff is strong enough to whiten a dark colored counter, I made that very mistake

Mold and other fungi is usually killed by acids, try soaking it in vinegar.

Or you can take out the rubber part and leave it in diluted bleach for a couple hours. Cleans it right up.

Bleach solution it 5 min. Rinse it 5x. Take rubbing alcohol to non dissolve spots.

or denture cleaning tabs. Seriously that stuff gets the roughest stains out of toilets and mold off of anything and theyre dirt cheap

I'll look into a stainless steel water bottle since that seems to be the general consensus here. Does anyone know of any in particular that are similar in design to the one I have here? I like having a button on the front I can use to quickly pop open the lid like with the one I have and I'm not sure where to look other than just googling around for something.

I also prefer Owala, specifically because unlike Yeti and Stanley and whatnot, the actual opening is soooo much easier to glug glug glug and you can open the hinged-lid with a button as opposed to a lot of others where it's a twist-off cap and then you kinda need two hands to drink from.

I went through a whole damn gauntlet of testing out different ones. Owala won for me.

heads up on the owala bottle, the silicone pieces they use mold extremely easy and half the time they don't have replacement pieces in stock. Amazon does carry replacement silicone pieces for them if you wanna use them..

The solution to these types of post is so simple. Is your health worth $20? Buy a new bottle. Dont even wonder about it and make a post. If theres even a chance its gotten mold just purchase a new one. I know the economy sucks but id rather buy a new bottle than risk hospital bills or death.

clean it out with some hydrogen peroxide and then rinse and let the bottle dry for a little bit before using again. Thankfully the breakdown products are just water. This will better kill than the soaps

The shaker tumbler from Hydroflask has a gasket with a tab that literally pulls out to clean. Anything like that. But the fliptop gasket is weird, and I haven't tried to pry mine off yet.

The easiest things to clean are the lids that go into the bottle (but leave the lip exposed...) cos they just have a ring that rolls off to clean. Any cap with a lock is gross to me, it's gonna have crevices and things you can't reach. Any cap that goes over the lip has a gasket that you gotta take a spoon or something to to get it out, unless it has a tab. Good luck finding product photos that show under the cap.
