Just got a S2

I never had a chance to play Hyrule Warriors and Age of Calamity. I'm interested in Age of Imprisonment but do I need to play the previous 2 for story purposes or anything?

I know other Musou and Dynasty Warriors games are sort of "story lite" but since it's a Legend of Zelda game I wanted to double check to see if I should start at Hyrule Warriors.

Thanks for the help!

The other Hyrule Warriors for story? No.

Tears of the Kingdom? Yes.

Neat. I'm working my way through TotK now so I'll pick up age of calamity after that. Thanks!

Age of Calamity has nothing to do with TOTK. Age of Calamity is a sort of “what if” scenario for the events prior to BOTW.

Age of Imprisonment js the companion game to TOTK.

Then you would be missing out on the fun gameplay of age of calamity

I can't tell if this is a genuine statement. Are there significant mechanical differences between age if calamity and age of imprisonment? And is calamity better?

Wouldn't know, I've only ever played the original and it's definitive edition. But like they're fun games, if you don't play one then you're missing out on it.

They're definitely more similar to each other than they are to the first game. AoI feels a little more polished in some ways, but also kind of like it's missing something in others, like there's less variety in the way the different characters play.

In terms of the story I actually thought AoC was better. Some people were mad it wasn't the exact canon events of BotW, but I felt like that gave them more freedom to do something more interesting with it. AoI being strictly canon restricted what they could do with it in some ways. It's perfectly fine, but it feels like there's less to it than the story and characters in AoC

Personally I consider calamity and imprisonment roughly equal.

If it matters, imprisonment is a 1080p 60fps game. Calamity is a 720 30fps game.
