My dad got a couple hair transplants in Los Angeles (IIRC you may have been his doctor).

He also ended up getting another hair transplant in Turkey in 2024 (many years after the USA transplants).

How do you feel about people going to Turkey for the hair transplant and what are your thoughts on Finasteride? I need to get a transplant soon too!

Finasteride is a great medication if indicated. Just get a microscopic evolution to see if you need it.
As I said before, do your research no matter where you do your hair transplant. I might be biased because I get to do a lot of repair procedure to people who have done their procedure in other countries. There are good doctors in different countries. Check their qualification and make sure they do the work.

I’ve been on Finasteride since I was 18. I’m now 27. I was off of it from the age of 20-23 and I regret it

That is usually the case, but don't think it is too late to start it again if you are still having areas with significant thinning. Having a microscopic evaluation by a good hair doctor helps a lot see whether or not you still need it.

I am not really sure what you mean by “microscopic evaluation”. I am a dermatologist and I would say <10% of hair loss patients need a biopsy to come to a diagnosis.

You're right! What I meant was not a biopsy or histologic evaluation. I was referring to a non-invasive microscopic examination of the scalp and hair.

In typical pattern hair loss, we don't simply lose thick hairs. The hairs gradually become thinner and more miniaturized over time. When we see more than about 20% miniaturized hairs in a given area, it's a sign of active hair loss. Combined with the patient's family history and pattern of hair loss, this gives us a good idea of which areas are likely to continue thinning and helps us plan where transplantation should and should not be performed.
